      IMO there are difference in terms of structure, design, damage, impact angle, etc. between guardrails on certain parts of the circuit. Probably, the guardrails near the straight is weaker compared to guardrails near the corner because it was not expected to have a major crash on that part

The cars are designed to not explode like that hence why we never see cars go up in flames like that on impact, even major ones, but again, in this case the car was ripped in half. The question is, would that resultant G force of the safety cell part of the car be safe enough. Arguably not if Grosjean had just hit an unyielding object headfirst, which is where we can be thankful that it was the halo that took that impact and not Grosjean's helmet.

No doubt F1 would be a lot safer if cars' wheels couldn't hook each other and potentially launch or flip cars like we also saw in today's race, but I sure hope the open wheel part of open wheel racing doesn't come to an end any time soon because it's just too dangerous. Glad Romain made it out of this one alive. Makes me wonder how safe this type of barrier is, as it’s similar in style to the single barrier that punctured Kubica’s rally car and nearly severed his hand. Vettel is totally right that the barrier shouldn’t have split open and the car / fuel tank shouldn’t have caught fire like that, but since it did happen I think they might need to take a close look at how they can improve metal barriers if they continue to use them. On the one hand, metal barriers absorb energy better than a concrete barrier, but the car can only be so safe and it can’t protect well against a broken barrier cutting into the chassis.

  • @ChrisDornDorny
    @ChrisDornDorny Před 3 lety +2

    Vettel is spot on to be fair. Everyone keeps saying its amazing how quick the response was.... A couple of guys turned up with some small fire extinguishers and was not really putting out the fire, they didn't really help...
    If Grosjean had been knocked out or unable to get out that vehicle himself, he would have burned alive, as those fire extinguishers were not doing much to put out the fire.
    It was the Halo and Grosjean getting up and out of the car, that saved his life it had nothing to do with the safety car or marshals. Those marshals were not controlling that fire, they didn't have the tools to control or reduce that fire quick enough. Nothing against the marshalls as you are not going to put out an inferno with some basic fire extinguishers. The Marshals were just there watching an inferno and could not really do anything

      Olivier Panis broke a leg in a bad luck situation.
      Sebastian Bourdais took a hard hit at Indy 500 qualifiying.
      I don't know why us frenchies like to wreck cars but judging by how badly we drive everyday, I'm not that much surprised...

    shows how far safety has come in this sport, his car was in half, on fire, and the front half I'm pretty sure went THROUGH the barrier

    Hope Dany is feeling ok.
    As for the case with Grosjean, it really wasn't his fault - but it must have been horrifying to watch Romain burst into flames.
    As for Romain - so glad you're alive.
    Wishing you a speedy recovery!

    And it's comments like that from Seb that enable continuous improvement. Yes, RG getting out of that fireball was a miracle, and safety has come a long way, but it still has a long way to go. Improvements to barrier design could come from comments like this and save a life down the line.

    Its great to see that Romain walked away with such minor injuries seeing this truly horrifying crash. But it also shows, that you can never stop improving safety. A couple of years ago, that crash could very well be fatal for him. Last year, a great talent in Anthoine Hubert was lost due to a horrible crash. I hope the FIA will investigate the accident and take the right actions from it.

    Was like a Marvel movie when Roman came out of the fire. The guy is super human. He looked calm and collected climbing over the rail also. I am sure that he even put the steering wheel back on after getting out. So glad he got away with minor injuries!

    Danill Kyvat was really2 somekind unsettled (I can't think any word) we can saw him looking at his mirror so often after that incident. Anyway I'm happy Grosjean is ok that's most important and main priority of this kind sport, they put their life at risk to achieve their goal
