  • Hi guys! In today's video I talk about my opinion on whether or not Melafix actually works. Unfortunately, I've had to use this product a couple times on some sick fish that I adopted from PetSmart, so I know what works for me and what doesn't. Based off of my own personal experiences, do I recommend Melafix? Well, here's my answer- yes and no. This video pretty much explains what I think about the Melafix treatment and what situations it should be used in. To clarify, I personally use it to treat wounds and sores, but I have not yet been successful in using it to treat fin rot or fungus. I hope this helps!

    Melafix has worked for me when my fish had a bulging eye and later a few frayed fins. But the treatments are a bit of a hit or miss. The best way I’ve found is to, in addition to any necessary treatments, get the fish’s health back up.

    I'm using it in a 1750 ltr pond. One fish has red sores after a pond clean up with fresh water. It's either stress or a real wound as I have a pond heater he may have touched. This stuff really stinks like Vic's rub! It says a ratio of 24 caps but I'm going to use 10 caps and change 25% water. Then in a week's time I'll repeat it.

    In my experience with tail/fin rot it truly took so long that they got used to the melafix I have had 2 fish with fin rot and one with ripped fins, however he had symptoms for about 2 days before I could find a bubble filter...now I plan to give him a salt bath.🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟

      That's good (well, not the fin rot, but the fact that it progressed slow enough for you to fix it)! I hope your fish feels better! :)

    How do I cure finrot on my fish. I got a koi fish from meijer and it has fin rot and it’s tank has been cloudy for longer then 4 days. It had two other buddies but they ended up passing and they also had finrot. I just bought melafix to help with finrot and parasites but now I’m not sure on what to do

    Unfortunately I use malefix and in 15 minutes my fish die my water was right all the alkalines temperature correct filtration it's kind of hard when you raise a fish like koi since little and by using the right amount of medication for red spot 20 minutes later like I stated he passed I tried to do CPR on my koi I know that's silly that's how much my face meant to me so thank you I hope I have not opened to anybody

    Hi! Thanks for the video. Just lost a guppy today from fin rot 😢. I also tried using Melafix and obviously it didnt work. What would you recommend then for fin rot?

    • @Fishin4Fish
      @Fishin4Fish  Před 6 lety +2

      Unfortunately, fin rot is a bacterial disease that moves pretty rapidly. If you don't catch it in an early stage, then there's really nothing you can do to fix it. However, if you do catch it on your fish when it's first developing, then I would do a partial water change right away, 7 days of full dosages of Melafix (then another water change), and add some aquarium salt to your tank to help the fins heal and balance the tank levels. You can also use API Stress Coat on top of the Melafix to reduce the fish's stress and promote healing (it also replaces the fish's slime coat). Anyway, I hope this helped! Sorry to hear about your guppy :(

      Hi! I just wanted to give an update. I lost one more guppy right after the death of the first.😔....with two guppies left I was SO stressed and worried at how quick these fish were going. (I also purchased them sick from PetSmart....). I did like a 50%water change two days ago and finally added the salt then too. Of the two guppies, one was losing their tail crazy fast and not eating and just stayed in one corner. After I added the salt it literally took within the first hour for Sunny to start swimming around and within three hours for him to eat! 😀 I was soooo relieved and am still happy to have my fishes okay. His tail is starting to grow again too. Thanks SO much for your advice and video!! Really appreciate it, you're awesome!! 😁👌🐡

      There are directions on the back of the bottle that'll tell you how much you'll need to add per gallon (5 ml per 10 U.S. gallons). You can use this when you're adding new fish or when your fish is sick.

    If it finroots, can't be cure with melafix, you have to cut finroots area, then treatmen with melafix it would work. And if it fungus, just treatmen with salt, and fastest water change every 2/3days fully water change and do not feed the fish daily, feed the fish once 2/3 days till the fish get better then u can feed them normaly. Also all the treatmen it depend on your water quality 😁

    Melafix was waste of money, time and fish ended up dead instead. Have tried melafix several times every time fish ended up dead, no more melafix. I would rather put the wounded fish in a lightly diluted salt water without iodine.
