Barbra Streisand - COLOR ME BARBRA comparison: official edition vs original edition (1966)

  • COLOR ME BARBRA is a Barbra Streisand television special broadcast originally in 1966. The regular, official edition has been available since 1986 on VHS first and later on DVD. But there is a previous, primitive edition of the special (known as "dress rehearsal edition") that has a few differences with the one we are all familiar with. I put together excerpts from both editions to make the comparison. Enjoy!

    Muchas gracias, Gustavo! Streisand in the 60s is really different from the same person in the 90s, the 2000s and so on. No matter which decade, she has been my favorite singer of all time.

    Such deep nostalgia. As a teen, I view both of Streisand's TV specials and listened to the albums over and over.

    THIS IS GREAT!!!!! That ALWAYS drove me insane at the end of "Starting here Starting Now" that the audience clapping and cheering drowned out her powerhouse belt at the finish!! thanks fro sharing!!

      There was something amiss with the sound overall in this show.
      They struggled to find a balance between the live & prerecorded segments throughout the entire thing.

    This is amazing! I actually watched the tv special (on a black & white tv; only rich people had color tv!). I wasn’t even a teenager yet, but I remember saying, wow, she’s incredible!

    Happy, happy Babs fan again. You’re my favourite person for sharing once more. Color me Barbra holds such memories. I fell in love with her work at 9 years old when I first heard the album ( my mum bought it). I’ve played her music almost daily since then.

      I know what you mean. Only my sister Nancy was the one who brought Barbra's magic into our house. I miss her. and those hopeful days.
      But Barbra's verve, imagination, humor and heart are here forever ♥ in us...

    I never even knew this dress rehearsal stuff existed but it's great. I've always thought the audience was too "present" during the concert portion of the show and the side by side really shows how intrusive they were in comparison, although I also think they might not have been quite forward enough in the dress rehearsal footage.
    Thanks so much for sharing this, Gustavo.

    I loved seeing this material. I often ask myself why I am so fascinated by this woman. My mom loved Barbra in the 1960s and I wound up becoming entranced. I did not see the first three Television Specials when they aired (past my bedtime) so when I was 17 two friends and I went to New York City and watched My Name Is Barbra and Color Me Barbra at the Museum of Broadcasting. It was a great experience.
    One of the happiest purchases I ever made was the 5-DVD set of The Television Specials. Thanks and please continue to provide these amazing Streisand gems.

    Thanks for posting this Gustavo . In 1980 I bought the All Star Videos of Color Me Barbra nd also their two volume Barbra Story. Then when barbra officially released Color Me in 1987 it disturbed me that I was hearing this canned applause that ruined the songs. One part you have missing (where its really noticeable was the opening of the Circus act and her monologue. It was so intrusive and phony. I wish they would release it in better sound quality without the intrusive canned applause. Thanks Gustavo for putting thsi together,

    I think that I have a version of the primitive version that I bought in Belgium in 1990 (you could buy Imports easily in Belgium on BS unlike France where there was never anything available) and which certainly came from England since it was on order and the video cassette of this show was called in the proposed catalog: "Streisand in concert". When I watched it I was so disappointed with the quality of the images which were almost blurry and similar to the quality of the video you are comparing here. The cover of this video cassette was not a photo of Barbra but a very colorful drawing certainly wanting to highlight the content of the video (Color me Barbra). I kept this video cassette that I watched all the same a multitude of times as a teenager because I did not have another copy, the only video cassettes available at the time in France were "A happening in CP" , "Putting it together", and "One voice", but "Color me Barbra" had already been stopped from being imported into France. So I don't think I'm wrong in saying that I have one of these cassettes which must have been stored for a few years already in England and which crossed the Channel to end up at home in France.
    Valery from France.
    I found on the Internet the photo and the description of the video cassette of which I speak above. I don't know more... I put the link if it works...

    I heard she messed up the first take of "Any Place I Hang My Hat" and there were gasps in the audience. She blew the second take out of the ballpark. That's why she has that "HaHa I'm great" look on her face as she walks away from the mic.

    As I've written on other threads, Streisand biographers claim that they were on a very tight schedule, tensions were high, and La Babs was becoming very annoyed (also devastated that the studio lights killed one of the penguins). It was well into the wee hours of the night and they emptied the studio so Barbra could re-do all the songs ... they then editied in the audience applause. Who knows what's true and what's fiction. Maybe she will address it in her book.

    So, a little trivia about the recording of the concert segment----the audience was made up largely of Babs' fan club, and the session lasted until 3 in the morning. Barbra was reportedly frustrated with the crowds' over-the-top applause, and kept asking for retakes, but the audience just kept on screaming after every take, and as at the start of "Where Am I Going?" even interrupting her in places. As the concert segment started taping around 9 pm, this meant she had been belting full-force for six or so hours, and she felt she sounded strained and "scream-y" just trying to be heard over the cheering and applause. Gotta wonder why the "official" version didn't tone down the audience a little and let her stunning vocals shine thru a little more, but apparently CBS wanted to show her effect on a live audience, or something. Still my favourite versions of "C'est Si Bon" , "Anyplace I Hang My Hat", and "It Had To Be You" by anyone, anytime, anywhere.

    It's the mixers fault for adding that applause. The audience needs to be mic'd in order to be heard. As B has mentioned in her Release Me albums sometimes there was no way to go back to a recording to remix it. It was probably too expensive to have all television specials remixed. But the audiences nowadays ruin a performance by their incessant clapping and shouting! 😡!!!
    In classical performances they don't applaud until the song is complete. Good side by side comparison for our girl B to shine. 😉

  • @JeffBazell
    @JeffBazell Před 2 lety +1

    Either Barbra, Marty or someone at Barwood thought the applause were lackluster in the original so they played the special in front of a few fans 20 years later who were in a little studio watching a monitor and reacting. It sucks, IMHO. Yes, it drowns out some of the original audio.

    • @jochenstossberg5427
      @jochenstossberg5427 Před 2 lety +1

      Bullshit. Total bullshit. This was a very carefully supervised, very expensive production. There was no audience present. It was produced to create the illusion that there was one. Trust me - this was stage managed to within an inch of its life.

    • @JeffBazell
      @JeffBazell Před 2 lety +1

      @@jochenstossberg5427 Not sure which audience detail you're talking about. In the original taping of the concert segment, there was a small audience made up primarily of Streisand Fan Club members. When the special was released on VHS and later DVD, it included a group of 'fans' who merely watched the special, years later, like 20 years later, whose applause were recorded for the VHS release due to the fact that, as I mentioned in my first comment, the original audience reaction and audio were less than stellar so it was decided to re-record, in a closed studio with a monitor, only the applause and laughter. I don't know why you need to reply with BS, Total BS. Be nice.

    • @GustavoDeSantaFe
      @GustavoDeSantaFe  Před 2 lety

      @@JeffBazell yes, but no 20 years later. They edited this "dress rehearsal" version for Monsanto or for the studio executives. Later, they decided to add more audience energy by allowing that group of fans reacting as they watched the concert. The group was located at the Ed Sullivan theatre (according to Barbra Archives). Only then was the special broadcast.
