Barbra Streisand - "Funny Girl" alternate "Swan Lake" sequence with addtl. footage (1968)

  • This is an alternate edit of the "Swan Lake" sequence from "Funny Girl" with additional footage and even alternate deleted footage. The audio mix (the original soundtrack and passages from the Tchaikovsky ballet) is not mine. I did try to clean the audio though. I also used original footage from the movie in high quality. This will give you an idea of how the sequence was planned but never released. Barbra sings additional lyrics in portions of the scene but that audio is not available.

It’s great to see the fabulous Tommy Rall as the Prince. A major dancer of the late 40’s and early 50’s and a part of the MGM factory of musicals (Kiss Me Kate, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, etc.) here he has shares quite a bit of screen time with Streisand but mostly from a distance or shot facing away from the camera. The role doesn’t require a lot from him but he is so graceful even as a comic foil to the star. Still an immensely gifted performer. I wish his career had been longer and more satisfactory, but I’m always thrilled to see him.

I agree Tommy Rall was both a great dancer and a great tenor. He could dance clássic and popular dances and he could sing opera and musicals He was in many Hollywood movies but he also danced clássical ballet at the American Ballet and sang operas on stage at the New York City Opera and other theatres
.His performance in the Jerry Herman musical Milk and Honey when he sang I will follow you showed that he was a tenor as good as Mario Lanza and we know watching his movies that he was as athletic and talented as Gene Kelly Rall could be the tenor and the dancer and it would have been excellent in The Student Prince and in Kismet with Ann Blyth instead of Edmund Purdum and Vic Damone and also in.other studios as Cable in South Pacific and Joe in Damn Yankees instead of the dubbed John Kerr and Tab Hunter But except his performance in Kiss Me Kate when he was amazing singing and dancing with Ann Miller Tommy Rall didnt have good roles in his Hollywood movies always playing suporting roles more dancing than singing
A pity because he was an excellent dancer and a very good tenor but MGM didnt know how to use his talents in the movies right.

Thank you having pointed out that he's Tommy Rall, I didn't know! He was an immense dancer, unfortunately there's only a few movies where his talent has been preserved, as far as I know. But only his performance in Kiss me, Kate is so amazing.

Saw this many many years ago, but this definitely is the best I’ve seen this footage. The alternate takes are amazing as well. Can understand this sequence was cut for the theatrical movie, a bit too long, but why oh why is it not on the latest blu-ray release, as part of the extras? Maybe on the upcoming 4K edition? In her memoirs, she hinted that she might add this scene to a future DVD release. She added a few cut scenes to a new release of The Way We Were and, although she thought highly of Sidney Pollack, and revered William Wyler, she said that those scenes were only cut for time, not because they weren’t important.

The shame if it all is that they cut some of her best broadway songs for the film. “Cornet man”, “ private Schwartz”, “who are you now” and most importantly, “the music that makes me dance”. The obc recording of “music” is Streisand’s best performance ever.

They should have kept the middle part, so much more funny! They should have edited the beginning because the duet parts are hysterical.
As a kid I remember thinking… this isn’t funny when I first watched it. I laughed in the original when she pushed her way through the core and then in an instant/same time, appears at the tip of the V & is dancing in perfect unison with the core.
It was very smart shooting, not showing her feet… very smart, Barbra doesn’t seem to have a good sense of her body, never took dance class, why should she? The lead/star, but like Whitney through out their careers every time they move their body’s to the beat, it’s like, YIKES! But the über-unearthly talent supersedes any flaw.
Especially from 1965-1979, truly flawless… perfection!

Cinephiles often lament cut sequences and “lost” footage, but I find that directors and editors more often get it right, and the movie is better for their cuts. Think of the “Wizard of Oz” and the much shortened scarecrow number and deleted “Jitterbug” number, or “King Kong” and the cut spider pit sequence. Very often, less more.
