  • This is a shorthanded MOB rescue drill of an unconscious MOB using a block and tackle and a halyard to the top of the mast. It is done at a mooring and with the MOB in starting in a dinghy over the side, however, it does demonstrate several key principles for rescuing an unconscious MOB. Rescuing an MOB is a big topic, and I hope to include some more episodes that include the use of a life-sling and approaches under sail and under power.

Thanks for posting, my experience: with an 8:1 pulley you will not need to use body weight or significant strength. My partner who is much smaller and lighter than my 98kg, can lift me in from the sea effortlessly. The block and tackle I use is dedicated for this purpose and has Kong carabiners on each end. One end goes on a spare halyard and gets hoisted by about 15', the other end clips onto the lifejacket's safety line. The casualty can be hoisted with one hand, and the other used to move or stabilise the casualty. The blocks are Harken with ballbearings, very low friction. Total time to recover, including rig up from the locker, under 3 minutes (does not include getting the bat back). I have fitted all my lifejackets with MOB Lifesavers (a commercial product, I have no association with) that is connected to the lifting strop of the lifejacket. If floats free when the LJ inflates, which means the rescue party just needs a boat hook to snag the floating Lifesaver, then connect to the carabiner and haul aboard.

Thank you for sharing all of that. There is a lot of great material and information. I was not aware that such a pulley existed and I had not heard of the MOB Lifesaver before. (I sail so much singlehanded, I had not looked at this stuff for years, decades even) I looked it up and there is an amazing video clip here on both the use of the MOB Lifesaver and the Harken Six Part Ratcheted Block Tackle. Thank you for sharing all that. moblifesavers.com/ These seem like a "must-have " for offshore crews. Thank you so much for sharing this. We can all learn from this.
