Deftones Change Reaction
I don't think there's another album that left a bigger impact on my adolescence than White Pony. Such good memories!
Agreed
yea White Pony is one of the greatest albums ever made. every single song is fucking iconic. Its gotta be the best album of the late90s-early 00s era. its like white pony, the chronic 2001, and brave new world.
Just can't believe it's been out for 20 damn years already. Insane.
💯
It’s in the top 3 👌
Abe is legend, drummers know how awesome he is
He's Mario Duplantier's favorite drummer
One of my top 10 drummers for sure!
An absolute behemoth behind the kit!
I could play drums in my garage all day. And I'd never come up with something as "fucking cool" as he does. Just the coolest beats ever
agreed. abe is one of the most underrated drummers among music listeners, but drummers know whats up.
His drumming in digital bath and change is incredible. hes my favorite "feel" drummer.
Her name is Rodleen Getsic.... Backup singer is lovely
There is a live version I saw with her performing her part on stage. Also see other singers come on stage for that part too.
12:14 if you listen really closely you can hear her say something someone would say in the bedroom 😂 it's quiet in the mix but it's there
True fans know who Rodleen is👍
I always felt like this was a modern take on Great Gig in the Sky
I bet her name has gotten a lot of google hits today!
yeah, abe's drumming is a big part of what made the deftones way more than just "a nu-metal band".
That and they have a DJ that doesnt sound like a DJ
I've been always saying this about Abe in White Pony. Too bad he plays more simply now
@Justin Allred. Sort of. There are a lot more characteristics that render them not so.
@@ADT2695 yea idk i’m pretty sure they’ve said themselves that they don’t fit into one genre it just so happens that they’re labeled Nu-Metal
@@snizzz8687. That’s what I was alluding to, not to mention they’re inarguably more authentic and eclectic than any of their contemporaries.
There was a lady recording her own track in the studio the day they went to record and the band loved what she was doing and asked her to be on the track. The yodeling isn't Chino.
I believe she also did it live with them for, at least once !?
@@Nebuloid1 At least once since she's in the music video which uses live footage.
Rodleen has done it live with them a handful of times over the years, most notably at the Chi Cheng Benefit back in 2009.
I was looking around to see who would start the shamanic screams at a show. Chino was doing the part!! and he nailed I was blown away. Till this day I was confused if it was actually him or another person. F-ing masterpiece.
@@sunbellyray7536 I have seen Chino attempt it a few times live and was shocked how close he got to it Rodleens. Teri from Le Butcherettes has done the Rodleen part with them live before too
Rodleen Getsick vocals are beyond incredible. For years and years I believed that female voice had been edited to get a synthetic feeling to it. I was wrong. That's her natural voice.
I find her interpretation so impressive and intense that I consider it as the next best voice solo after "The great gig in the sky".
I’m 35 years old and have loved this song since I was 15… and I had no idea lol o am blown away that’s her voice. I only saw deftones once in 07? and they didn’t perform it. I was so bummed cuz this was my favorite at the time.
I know her, lived with her! The real deal. You can find other vids of her raw and she absolutely goes there, without help of effects. Sure reverb helps, but that is all her for real.
@@meganturner8438 Im 40 and I've been loving them since adrenaline. I saw them about 12 times, they missed knife prty maybe 3 times in all those shows.
2022 concert for Ohms tour was great, nice to see the new members blending in perfectly.
But I was waiting Radiant City so bad... And they didn't perform it. So, yes, I get the feeling
@@topangacreek woha! Nice to know man. I wonder what would be hearing her rehearsal in the next room. Did that happen to you? I imagine I'd feel something in between astonished and freaked out :)
@@loochan-o7174 I have a hard time imagining Rodleen rehearsing, she is rather stream of consciousness. Yes, she can plan and prepare and does so in life, but music and art- she is plugged in and just opens the valve. You should just seek her out and communicate directly, she'd probably appreciate the appreciation.
Freakin love Deftones. One of the absolute GOAT albums, this one. Surprised nobody’s talking about the incredible fretless bass work on this track. RIP Chi, man. Still hurts.
🕯️☸️
Chi is a LEGEND. You can hear him all over this song. Miss him so much. #OneLoveForChi
💯♡chi
I definitely come to approach the drumwork more thanks to this breakdown, but I've always thought the bass made this song
he just used a sweet preamp its not fretless but smooth as a jazz bass tone. fretted basses where what he used. super sick legato is his thing
The screeching vocals in the bridge and beyond gave me massive chills first time I heard this song 20 years ago. Still does. White Pony is an absolute masterpiece of a record. It breaks my heart to know that artists like Deftones are getting fewer and fewer these days.
They aren't, you're just getting older and not keeping up with new music like you did 20 years ago.
Not gonna lie, it's been a rough week and despite listening to this album over the last 20 years, it still hit me hard. Had to check myself.
@@Jeremy-hx7zj Dude, hold your horses. I'm only 40! To your contrary belief, I do keep up with current music and sit in front of Bandcamp and Spotify every friday going through most of the new releases for hours on end. Regardless of genre. Funk, Jazz, Hip Hop, Rock, Blues, Electro.... There is A LOT of music out there for sure and I'm not saying that good artists don't exist anymore. It's just that not many current artists impact me as much and give me that excitement as other bands did back in the 90s and 2000s.
@@J0intV3nture my dude, you'll never have that brain chemistry again. It's not the music, it's your brain. And that's okay.
I dig deep as well, and once in awhile get moved, but not the same as my early years. Our brains are just different now.
But we still have good stuff coming up... It's just harder to find but appreciation is the same or bigger...
A drummer that can play the fastest or most complicated beat isn't the best drummer. The best drummer is the one who writes the best beat possible for the song. White pony (the proper version that starts with Feiticeria and ends with Boys Republic) is one of those rare albums where the drummer plays the best best possible for every single song.
One of my fav drummers. Such a good style and really compliments the music. You can tell he has fun playing..
Abe went hard on adrenaline specifically nosebleed
Jimmy Chamberlain and John Dolmayan aswell
Preach! I think the same. IMO Another great drummer at the service of the song is Ringo Starr
Deftones is chill music over anxiety drums. Love this band.
Good way to explain it.
Never have I ever heard it explained so well
I think it's in the sleeve notes of Adrenaline where Abe Cunningham is credited for his "Caffeine Beats" HA!
The part where the back up singer comes in ALWAYS gives me chills and makes me want to tear up, Idk its crazy
Same for me. I just let the tears flow. A lot of their songs evoke an emotional response for me.
it does make you tear up it's like desperation made music, and the drums follow through with that feeling
the vocal solo in this song always reminded me of the one in pink floyd's great gig in the sky
Damn straight
Always does
Absolutely 100%
I imagine her thinking about singing Great Gig while being stabbed!
I can't believe yours is the only comment mentioning this! Even though there are a lot of differences between the songs, it's such an obvious comparison to make.
This whole album is legendary, the Sade influence on the vocals, The Cure influence on the aesthetic, it's just an amazing mixture of genres.
They actually made a No Ordinary Love cover and it's pretty much perfect.
No matter what kind of day I've had, no matter what mood I'm in, no matter what circumstance, I am ALWAYS in the mood to listen to Deftones. It's like sex turned into music, they're so fucking good.
Been 20 years and I'm as obsessed with them now as I was then.
Omg I totally agree.
Deftones can fix any day. They are exceptionally excellent in Vegas.
The song features a guest vocalist at the end named Rodleen Giecek
*Getsic
@@kidangel101 pretty sure Getsic is just the phonetic pronunciation of Giecek which she uses so people don't botch her name. Like, for lack of a better example, Louis CK's last name is actually Székely, but CK is basically how its pronounced.
@@MYCASKET yeah yeah. Just giving the spelling that her publishing and IMDB are under
Rodleen Getsić maybe?
Ups... I once read on a video title "Rodleen Getsick" and I was convinced it was some kind of a nickname. Guess I've been wrong the whole time 😅
Still get chills every time 20+ years later.
Abe is one of the most under rated drummers alive today.
Abe Cunningham has the coolest drum tones. He’s not the most technical drummer, but man, is he badass.
I call his style sexy symbol cuz his hits all start with symbols
His feel and groove is amazing though
His unique, creative and his groove is insane, fuck technical drumming
One of Detones' most creative, mystical and mindblowing track. There's just something so singular about it, from the vocals to the drumming and the guitar tone. I don't know if it is Deftones' best song but it is up there. It's just incredible! And the fact that Rodleen Getsic (the guest voalist) is practically unknown, brings to the song something absolutely mysterious.
When you get to them: Dir En Grey - Vinushka, pleeeeeaaaaaase! :)
The ending power riff with the vocals in Knife Party is one of the greatest of all time.
THIS! It’s so damn powerful and moving.
The "I could float here forever" lines put me in a loop everytime
Abe Cunningham = thoughtful drumming...every song...always inspirational....yet no one talks about him....hero!
White Pony is a masterpiece of an album. One of these records that got made at the exact inflection point of a band. It's still got a lot of the raw heaviness of the first two records but it's so much more evolved and experimental in every way.
This song is sooooo deftones-y and soooo good
White Pony is an album that requires a night time listen. It just hits different late at night played loud. It's a masterpiece album. Digital Bath & Knife Party are so damn good heard at night.
at night after a couple drinks
Around the Fur is the daytime album, White Pony is the night drive during the summer album
Digital Bath is the ultimate Smash track, however it's too damn short! (that's what she said?)
@@notsure1350 Put the song repeat function on...unlimited smashing...lol ;-)
I even more love it while driving by night.
I just love how that pause "floats forever" before he sings that line.
I feel lik Abe Cunningham deserves more credit for the "djent" drumming style. Incredible drummer that taught me how to syncopate.
Man I love, love, love Deftones.
Deftones wrote the sound track of my life, from the early 90's to now, so many memories associated with this band
You are a deep and dark soul with a bright future.
Abe Cunningham on the drums, always hitting hard!
dude nailed this one
Abe's a king!
Punishes the kit live!! ✌️🖤🤘
The "Great Gig In The Sky" of my generation, perhaps. Chills every single time.
abe is such a huge influence on me as a drummer, he and jimmy chamberlain. but, i think abe's secret weapon is his feel for groove and his hiphop background which brings such a lively flavor to the feel as opposed to the mechanical nature of most metal drummers.
It's funny a lot of my favorite metal drummers don't come from a rock or metal background, like Abe with a hip hop influence or Mario from Gojira who was trained as a jazz drummer. They always bring such incredible groove to the musical style.
Yes more deftones/tool = what we like
You have been all over the place which is good. Variety is the spice of life.
So enjoyable to see you return to this genre. You probably have 10k suggestions...I hope vicarious and culling voices are in there somewhere. Will enjoy watching regardless.
And The Smashing Pumpkins (89-2001 "original" lineup era though)
Speaking of which Tonight, Tonight or Mayonaise from the Pumpkins would be awesome. Also both Tool recommendations dude above me mentioned too. You can never go wrong with Tool or Deftones as well of course.
I love Deftones and this is my absolute favorite track out of their catalog. This track is best experienced with headphones. I'm not going to lie when the female vocals and screams start in the track my eyes tear up every time. Very emotional track, thanks for all the great content!
Beware - deftones next please!
Excellent suggestion, one of my favorites. Underrated album in general, but Beware is so good.
Underrated song. The ending is about as heavy as it gets
beware is definitely one of their best songs, the whole album is great
Dude that song is so sad. I would say one of the best but every single deftones song is a masterpiece
Hell yea again Geebz. 🤘🏼 DEFTONES
The guitars on this track are heavily inspired by the song Little Dipper by the band Hum. Chino cites their 1995 album You'd Prefer an Astronaut as one of his favorites.
holy shit wow i can hear the influence! thanks for this info
Deftones are so unique , they always keep you guessing
Thats why I love them. Enjoyed your review Sir
The drummers fillers are almost like flams with a crash on the end... i love it!!!
GOOD EARS!!!
Because of you, I've been checking out some other "reaction" channels.
1: You PAUSE the song instead of talking over it. 👍👍
2: You highlight the TALENT/SKILL behind the music/engineering, bringing the average listener's attention to aspects that elevate the music but may not be all that noticeable to the casual listener. 👍👍
3: as a composer, you're coming from a place of "authority" and educating the average listener while admiring the artistry. 👍👍
I haven't seen others doing what YOU do, let alone doing it with an actual technical knowledge of the craft.
This is part of what sets you apart 🤙🤙
Keep it up 👊
I’ve followed Deftones thru their career...and felt they where a production/engineered band in the beginning with a great sound of distinction/unique style... they are now a band that I must see live every time they come thru town and every album release is a must buy!
White Pony is one of my favorite albums, hands down, and this is one of my favorite songs. Hard to pick favorites off of that album, but this song has been giving me chills for 20 years now
Seriously. Cavity burns a hole in my soul. Reminds me of my first love lost.
Deftones - Minerva, Rosemary, Needles And Pins, You’ve Seen The Butcher, Be Quiet And Drive (studio version).
Hearts/Wires is super underrated too, and I LOVE that song
You’ve Seen the Butcher is such a good groove song.
Respect for mentioning Needles and Pins. That song bumps
This record came out when I was a freshman in high school and was really settling into my second year of playing guitar and let me tell you it ruined almost every other record for me for a good 6 months. I learned Knife Prty, Change, Passenger, and Feiticera on guitar immediately and proceeded to make my parents regret letting me buy a half stack. Such an amazing record and got me into so many other cool bands who were inspired by them. Never gets old seeing people become absorbed by her haunting wails and Abe's fantastic drumming only to have that wall of bass and guitars slam into you.
As a 44 year old man from the UK, I can confirm that the Deftones are just fucking gods 🙌
Deftones is truly a remarkable band. So many ups & downs, swings & roundabouts. Yet through all that they menaged to sustain a long and successful career, both critically and commercially. I've been a fan for 24 years now, they are truly a soundtrack to my life
Saw dredg open for deftones it was great concert.
Saw that same tour in Denver. Fuckin sweet dude. As I Lay Dying was there too. Fuck yeah.
Saw Dredg open for them in Cincinnati. Great show.
Hell yeah! Not enough people recommend Dredg in react videos. El Cielo, Lietmotif and Pariah are all packed with tracks I’d love to get Geebz’s thoughts on.
Rodleen Getsic did the screams/dog whistlin'
I remember the first time I heard this song after I got the album. This album just blew me away. This is one of my favorite ones off the album. Its crazy that its still as good as it is 21 years later.
LAMB OF GOD - EMBERS featuring Chino Moreno from Deftones. Time to turn the metal UP A NOTCH. 😁🎶✌️🤘
Fuck yes my friend! What a song that is 🤘👌
Nice! I never heard this one. I usually love Chino's guest appearances. Ever heard "Will to Die" by Strife. Very good.
@@foxjade8924 woah... that song is crazy..!
One of my favorite Deftones songs. The drum track plays in a loop in the background of my mind almost daily. Digital Bath is another great track on this album with a great drum sound.
I made an audible noise when this popped up in my feed. I'm so glad you gave this one a go! Deftones has a lot of great stuff but this is the song I come back to the most. It's one of their most interesting songs for sure. Even that Purity Ring remix you mentioned is killer.
Omg YES. 🤩 I really love your videos, and your openness to your viewers' suggestions.
Heard this song more times than days ive been on the earth yet when she comes in i get chills
Thank you sooooo much for doing this!!!! This song made me fall in love with Deftones, and made me realize how special they are. Total masterpiece!!
Deftones is one of my absolute favorite bands, so I always get excited when you react to one of theirs. This song is especially fun to see live, as Chino will take over the higher vocal bits sometimes.
Dude, love watching ur videos. It's like hanging out with that cool uncle who talks music with u. At the point of point of getting on CZcams just to look for any new videos from u and look forward to the next one.
This song is so huge for me. I was in my early 20s when it came out. Almost 20 years later it still gives me chills and gives me such nostalgia
When they released the Knife Party remix I thought finally I can play this song at a party lol the original is epic and blood curdling 🖤
Side note, Deftones was signed by Maverick-Madonna signed them herself under her label 🔪💃🏼
Cherry Waves is a good one from them.
Yes! Everybody upvote this, please!
Thank you soooo much for your reaction. This is one of my favorite songs with Deftones, and I have always wanted others opinions and prespectives in things I love (not always lyrics) but in feelings and tunes. Love your channel👍
Aloha Geebz! Stoked to see you do more Deftones, the Passenger reaction was great, but I super dug this. Have a happy weekend 😊
Aloha! Love me some Deftones! White Pony is just a flat out amazing album! RIP Chi.
Requesting a breakdown of my favorite "H" bands.
Hum and Helmet.
Awwright! 🤙
yesssss thank you geebz!!
Only album ever created that Rises above the captivation level of Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon." These two album are untouchable in my mind. Space, experimentation, emotion and timelessness.
This is a top 5 all time song for me. So damn good.
Love you're videos. You give equal weight to your heart and your ear when you react to some of our most precious sounds. Always knowledgable and genuine. More power to you geebz.
Thank you for what you're doing Geebz, please never stop. You will have a million subscribers by the end of the year. Quality material.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you! I requested (as I’m sure many others did) and you have delivered. Keep Deftones coming.
Abe's work on the ride symbol always gets me.
Un-reborn again - Queens of the Stone Age
I appear missing - Queens of the Stone Age
All I need - Radiohead
Thank you for helping bisect the songs that my favorite band plays, love your work Sir
Love the do, Geebz. Also love this song
This song is in the top 3 of my life's soundtrack. Thank you for doing this, appreciate the share of knowledge. Keep it up, Allright!
I have always loved the Deftones, and this CD and song are so powerful. It's an experience!
This song is always so incredibly moving to me. Major chills every time when the woman comes in with those vocals
Subbed bro. Keep up breaking down timeless songs man
Gotcha a cup of coffee lol
I'm so glad you did this track. In the soundtrack of my life, Deftones are #1. Now please do Hexagram. Awwwright!
If from now until the end of your channel, you just kept doing Deftones, Tool, Gojira, and Contortionist breakdowns I would be 100% content.
I would have loved to be a fly on the wall when that was recorded in the studio
excuse me i didn't know you reacted to this & you reacted to so much of my fav shit. yessssssss
What a wicked song. I haven't heard that in a long time. Very cool breakdown
I don’t even have time to watch this right now because I’m at work but I’m going to like it and let you know who excited I am that you’re doing it! Deftones are so damn good!
I love your content and knowledge of music as a whole Sir. Thank you for your hard work on these videos. I think your next Deftones song should be "ohms". It's got a groove that as a fellow musician, I think you'd appreciate. Thanks again for your insightful look on recording and techniques!
White Pony cd plays on a loop in my truck, I have an older truck, and I still listen and buy cds. Deftones is life for this 35 YO wife and mother.
Deftones concerts are AMAZING!! We went last year, best concert ever!
This Deftones Album (White Pony) was a very big part of my childhood. It is still one of the best albums ever made. If you like a good song with a visceral female vocal work you should really give Cult of Luna's Cygnus a try! July Christmas did godlike work on that themed album with the band. Have a nice day and keep on delivering greatness! Much love from austria
Aloha geebz, I understood what you meant when talking about the dynamic range and how the loudness of said instrument was just a result of non competing signal during that refrain. As always great decomp brother 🤘🏼
I love your stuff and I've been subbed for at least 3 ish months and I have no complaints! But maybe a recommendation that I would like to suggest. I'd personally love to hear your interpretations and speculations on the lyrical content and what maybe you think the vocalist is trying to say. Thanks for the rad open minded evaluations of music we love!
The Mars Volta decomposed. Pick any song.. They're all amazing
I disagree- the first two albums were bamanas- but amputechture was a garbled mess that three different guitarists ejaculated all over. No songs, no structure to the leads- just a noodles mess without any room to breathe..
Awwright!! Can't get enough of your channel bro 💪
Gonna drop those requests yet again!
The Grudge -Tool
The Boy Who Wouldn't Hoe Corn - Dan Tyminkski (save this one for when you wanna break from the rock/metal stuff again! Good ole Dan is most known for Man of Constant Sorrow, but this is a banger)
An absolute favorite of mine! 🤘🏾
Happy Friday indeed..... so glad you get to hear this masterpiece
Honestly one of the best Deftones tracks. It just evokes so much emotion. I feel like their more recent releases just don't hit the same way at all.
i think gore was pretty mid, but Ohms is a really solid album
So glad you did the original! Have a wonderful weekend sir!
Just found your channel this evening and was going to suggest you listened to this album because of how you spoke about drums in some of your other videos, and lo and behold you reacted to one of if not my favorite song on the album. You touched on it briefly, but this album in particular is one I find fascinating as even with my “listener ears” (i have a very very basic understanding of music) i found that both myself and a very talented friend of mine who is a professional drummer and bassist noticed that this drummer is insane. He changed the embellishment on nearly every phrase in every measure, adding and subtracting a single Tom or symbol hit or changing the kick pattern the entire way through the album. It’s ridiculous and fun to hear that level of musicality and playfulness from what I think is often a much more square and formatted instrument. Also; you acknowledged the change in the drums in the eq. I believe the vocal solo from the female singer is accompanied by a drum solo spanning that entire portion of the build and chorus. This album is such a treat. Highly recommend a listen through the whole thing again from start to finish if you ever have time, and thanks for the wonderful videos ^.^
i love watching these videos
Yessss! Great song and great album. They mentioned that HUM was an influence on their sound for this album. So maybe check out “Isle of the Cheetah” or something else (“Afternoon With the Axolotls”) from the Downward is Heavenward album soon?
I love the way the bass plays and is mixed on this song. It completely sets the feel
Hey another classic Deftones, alright! ;) Btw you're living the life man, judging by your closing comments! Good stuff!
Hey man, absolutely class as usual, can I suggest radiohead weird fishes from the basement, so so good
Deftones forever man. Be Quiet and Drive maybe next....
