When I was in Iraq, I listened to their song called "Bloody Cape" EVERY single day before I went out on mission. Deftones is a very important and sentimental band to me, and I'd love it if you'd check out Bloody Cape. Take care brother.

They definitely have their own sound. One of my favorites. Glad they were able to escape the shadow of the big nu-metal bands and keep going forward with their own thing.

Koi No Yokan is one of the greatest albums ever in my opinion. The title is a Japanese term that loosely translates to âLove at first sightâ but not exactly like Westerners understand it. Itâs more like a recognition of the soul upon meeting. Dope ass record.
I agree with you there. A lot of "old school hipster" Deftones fans will say Adrenaline or Around the Fur is the greatest and will probably never change their minds, but Koi No Yokan is probably my favorite so far. Wearing my KNY shirt from the album pre-order right now actually!

Youâre 100% about hipster fans and even more so would say White Pony is their magnum opus and itâs definitely their first BEST album but Diamond Eyes was a better record all around and KNY is in my opinion their best to date. Not as a collection of individual songs but as an album, itâs dynamic and cohesive and not stays on task. Itâs sexy as fuck. Itâs heavy and textured and nuanced. Itâs layered and Geebz is 100% when he mentioned Abe Cunninghams kick tone. If you HATE Deftones, you still love their tones. That kick drum is masterfully engineered. You can think Chino canât sing. Thatâs arguable but you canât argue that Deftones have DEF TONE.
I just saw Sergio Vega playing with Quicksand last weekend and he sweated on me a little. Probably my favorite living bassist right now. Heâs perfect for them, in the unfortunate absence of Chi.
Geebz channel is so dope dude. I usually donât watch his videos if I already know the song heâs decomposing because I watch his channel to find new music but when I saw this track was the subject for the today I had to see if heâd bring up chicken skin.

Koi No Yokan is probably my favorite. One night I was dreaming about being with someone I'd loved and missed, and these two eerie chords in my head woke me up. I felt these chords, & tried to record something but couldn't express it on guitar.
A few days later, I see Koi No Yokan on the shelf of a music store. I get in my car and play it. AWESOME!
THEN the intro to Leathers begins playing in my car, and I just about lost my shit!
Its possible my Pandora was playing Leathers in my sleep that night, or my brain did the deja vu perception trick where I just THINK I heard it before. But I still believe I heard those chords the first few seconds of Leathers, days before I knew Koi No Yokan existed.
Every album has a slightly different appeal, and I love them all.
@@metalboy27 While Around the Fur is my favorite (for many reasons), I don't think there are any bad albums. Each have their strengths and weaknesses, and I love all of them the same.
This song is, to me, as close to a perfect song as is possible.
Koi No Yokan is their best album overall. Every song just mashes to one another, so beautiful.

That's a bold statement my friend. Imo it's certainly great, also the most commercial. I don't think I'd personally call it their best. But that's sort of the beauty of their discography. All the albums sound significantly different. So answers to that question will vary quite a bit.

Deftones have a particular trick up their sleeve, and that's to create textures. They love textures and layering to create a hyper-moody atmosphere. Not dark, not light, but moody, all the same. Few bands as dedicated to that theme as much as they do.
Frank Delgado is the man.
I think Chino playing rhythm also opened the door for Steph to focus more on atmosphere.
@@RC_Cubed except Chino is the one who pulled the atmospheric change and Carpenter was doing very little writing up until this most recent album...... That's why it changed.... Chino opened the door to his own creativity..... There's a good interview with Chino about it and the pause between albums because the tension him handling so much writing and his writing style creates

Same. Saw them in 98 and it was one of my favorite shows ever.
Discovering deftones in the 2000's as a teenager was like discovering there's a new emotion you've never felt before.
The TONE of that outro riff is absolutely disgusting, one of my all time favorite riffs. So simple but so effective.
All based from meshuggah too. Steph loves them.
You should give a listen to "I Am The Morning" by Oceansize. I actually thought this riff might've been an homage.

Frank Delgado's work as keyboardist/turntablist is often understated and I always enjoy it when you mention it.
Frank's ambience layering is Deftones secret sauce imo.
I appreciate how when the nu metal craze was kicking off with all these DJs, Deftones introduced Frank as simply "media". He's so much more than just another DJ.

Outstanding song. No one does it like Deftones. So variable with their sounds, can lull you in with brilliant soft melodies before crushing you with brute force within the same song. One of the greatest bands ever
Saw them play this song in a torrential downpour (B4 the album even released) at Jones Beach Amphitheater and it was an out of body experience.
I've been to many shows at Jones Beach, including Deftones a few times, and I can always forgive the less than stellar sound there, because there really aren't too many things better than seeing your favorite bands outdoors on a summer night. Good shit!

Do others get visuals in the imagination while listening to music? As a sensory experience, I've always felt that the song as a whole takes us on a journey sometimes. The music infers, the lyrics intend, and the imagination interprets. This whole song is sensory heaven. At 15:02 DAMN... it's like breaking through the clouds into gold and that guitar is bliss.

Iâm so glad you listened to this song. It is truly a musical journey. The verses are bring you to a heavy, dark and low place while the chorus pulls you up out of it and gives a feeling of hope and rising above the clouds. The heavy closing riff feels like a climax of tension and strife thatâs been building through the song. Finally, you have a closing piece that feels both like a release, a goodbye, and an end to the journey.
I encourage you to listen to this album from start to finish, because this song is part of the longer musical journey that Koi No Yokan is.

One thing Iâve always loved about those guys is they donât give you too much of your favorite parts. They have some huge monstrous choruses and theyâre all very tasteful and just long enough. Theyâll always be one of my favorite bands.
This album goes beyond genre, beyond rock. But without being over-experimental.
Really enjoyable to see someone in the know & open mind enjoying himself listening to some good music even when he knows how it's done (or even more because you know how it's done ?) . Thanks for doing this & in general what you do in your channel for us ! đđ

Thanks for getting to this track, I was listening back through all albums from them, and Koi No Yokan is without doubt my favorite (White Pony is still the most iconic Deftones album, though!) and running through the songs I got to _Rosemary_ and thought that this track has what most people would enjoy out of Deftones.
A slow, creeping intro to a pounding, _relentlessly_ smooth riff that carries throughout the entire track. It's the best combo of old and new Deftones sound for any fan to hold onto in their S.O.L.
For anyone who hasn't heard from Deftones, or any fans who haven't gotten to Koi No Yokan, I *HIGHLY* advise you listen to the full album front to back. A fantastic experience that pulls and pushes you, and chills you out while letting you enjoy some trippy, and sometimes heavy riff work, fills, and intense, sometimes haunting vocals from Chino. A wonderful album, and one that I keep going back to, time and time again.

You should do Be quiet and drive (far away). Thats my favorite deftones song and i think that is the turning point where they kind of started evolving and being more experimental. I think of that song as a brigde from around the fur (which is my favorite album) to white pony (which most people would say is their best work)

Funny you mentioned vocal nodes, as Chino had surgery in the early 2000's, to fix vocal nodes. This is why their live in Hawaii DVD had him struggling to hit notes, and singing in strained pitches. It was recorded right before surgery.

First heard Deftones as a 7yo on NHL2004 . Didn't know who they were, just loved the sound they produced. Flash me in my 20's I heard them again. I fckn love them, will never stop listening to them
