- Todd Kenreck responds to Jimmy Kimmel sending a photographer to San Diego Comic-Con to ask cosplayers if they have sex in their costumes while audience members guessed; yes or no.

The question doesn't bother me so much but the way it was presented and the way the audience was encouraged to shame and look down on the cosplayer was upsetting. It's plain bullying.
Exactly!! 👍
I agree.

I'd feel very uncomfortable. You're there to enjoy yourself and take a break from everyday society that's judging you.
And then someone starts sexualizing you and tries turning your costume into something used for sex. I'd be bothered a lot.
I was in a similar situation at a major LA area con just over a year ago. the small film crew was very complimentary of my cosplay & asked to interview me, it was very positive... until they started asking questions. They quickly turned from supportive to bullying, demeaning & dehumanizing. I quickly left the interview after 3 questions & told them "we're done here". I then went to con security where I was taken (quickly) to the producers area, I told them the story & 10 minutes later I saw that film crew being escorted out on the convention center.... I say this as an encouragement to speak up.
never stay silent or 'just take it'. Besides standing up for yourself you never know who you may be helping. not everyone is comfortable standing up for themselves. If you can help a fellow cosplayer, do so.
And thank you @Cosplay Boom for all your great work & for standing up for such a great community.
I think it could be considered sexual harassment actually! It's highly inappropriate. I'm sure there were cosplayers that were upset when they were asked!
Sounds like Kimmel should've thought about that before even considering doing it. Or another way to solve the issue- DON'T DO IT ALL!
You explain this perfectly. I was one of those people they interviewed on camera, and when they asked the question, I told them off. Unfortunately, two of my friends' answers made it on air, now they are being bombarded by people online, sometimes taunted about their sex lives. This just caused more damage. From now on, I have to be worried while I cosplay about being questioned on camera. I'm going to start screening all questions before I agree to answer them.
I feel sorry for your friends. I wonder of it's possible to push for a legal action against Kimmel on that note. Don't TV shows ask people to sign releases before they can show the interviewees faces on TV?
Agreed. I do feel for your friends. :( I hope everything can at least be cleared at this moment in time.
+Button Nose
you DO have to sign a release, however a lot of production teams have you sign first, before they do any on camera work... then they can 'do as the please' with you... most times the people being interviewed don't realize they can take their release back & just let it happen. No blame or shame to them, they just don't know OR they want to get away from the situation as fast as possible. many producers a good at manipulating others. It's sad what they do in the name of 'entertainment'.
Pieced Together Cosplay
That's so sad, since what they think they are consenting to is different from what the production team can legally do to them...
He shames only himself. Does he want to be tagged as an a-hole? Welp, he's succeeding.
wow what a fracking jerk that Kimmel
Not that I've ever watched Kimmel, but now I have even less motivation to do so.
So ignorant.
Sean Engard I have watched it. I didn't like it, honestly.
And I was under the impression that he was one of us. Guess not.
Well, I'd be very uncomfortable if they asked me that.
What a scumbag. Plus, you forgot to mention that this is sexual harassment, at least it is towards those who were upset by the questions. Thank you for this video!
Thank you for making this! I don't know why people would agree to answer this question but either way to the rest of the world this is what people are going to think cosplaying is about. THEY DO REPRESENT THE COMMUNITY to everyone outside it. This is not a HBO special where does he get off asking people about their sex life, I know this is Late Night but still.... I hope he loses some of his audience.
You sir have my respect.
Every time someone tells me “Oh, Jimmy Kimmel is so progressive”, I’ll show them this video, because I will *never* see Jimmy Kimmel as someone worthy of viewership. It bothers me that he managed to get away with this, along with all the other pathetic excuses for ‘skits’ he’s done, over the years.
Whithersoever will get him more viewers, he’ll go to. Because more viewers = more profit.
Oh, and if you see this happen at a Convention, or if you experience it; do yourself and your friends a favour and report these people. No one should have to go through this.
Me being a catwoman cosplayer this really makes me mad cause I do get cat called and stuff this is just so rude to even ask like why would u ask that?!?!?
Out of all the cosplayers, the one who responded was clearly joking.
The question is the equivalent to saying cosplayers live in their parents basement and are weird.
Definitely a prying question to ask, but I still love this clip because this particular cosplayer has a raunchy sense of humor and probably couldn't care less what Jimmy Kimmel thinks of him. He's kinda above the "hurt feelings" and embarrassment junk.
Not only did the studio ok sending a guy (probably with a few crew) to SDCC to harass people, they then ok'd the footage for airtime, what a bunch of muppets!
I haven't been to a US convention but here this would fall easily into sexual harassment and would get them ejected from the convention center(s). another case of people thinking the subject is a joke already so it'll be easy entertainment.. faith in humanity down a notch.
Had this happened to me, I would have clicked a picture of the photog and said "This interview is over. I'll go to the convention organizers, circulate your picture, have your credentials revoked, and make sure you never set foot near this convention again."
If only we could *also* say "If you ever ask that question of any fellow cosplayer again, I'll find a way to have you brought up on harassment charges."
However, we can only do so much. It's a shame we can't do more to protect fellow cosplayers, with people like that exploiting us for the name of comedy. It's cruel, deceptive, and wrong.
This type of trickery is low even for someone like Kimmel, exploiting fellow cosplayers like this for fun. Thank you for posting this clip and letting us know. I don't watch him, and now I have absolutely no reason to do so, having earned my distrust and disdain for such an act.
That's right! The cosplay community is very positive! Oh you bought that cosplay?-I love that character too! That's your first try at making armour?-I'm damn impressed! It's a thing that makes other happy. Let's keep it that way. :)
That's just gone too far Jimmy Kimmel!
This is another reason why I hate Jimmy Kimmel.😡😡😡
Jimmy Kimmel has now pissed a lot of people off, I say we get even, not with violence but with cosplay. Every one should get a bunch of there cosplay friends to gether and do a youtube skit of Jimmy Kimmel, He thinks he can mess with us, so i say its only fair that we have some fun and give him a taste of his own medicine. Who is with me. CAN I PLEASE GET AND EXCELSIOR SHOUT.
EXCELSIOR!!!!!!!
EXCELSIOR !
+Holden
No, it's fighting fire with fire that way. And he'll edit the video and ask more attention for it, on his show.
Don't fight a pig in the mud, you both wil get dirty and the pig will enjoy it.
That was bad form indeed!
It was inappropriate but it is what is implied and tacitly encourages that vexes me most.
That cosplayers are "weirdos" and it is alright to ridicule them. It is offensive makes way for more offensive behavior towards cosplayers. Sayings, "Hey it was all just a bit of fun!" does not change the fact that it can incite harassment of cosplayers and make it seem acceptable.
Very bad form.
Maybe in mass (filling every seat) showing up at his show all dressed in I don't know everybody's favourite cosplay or maybe everyone cosplaying the same character i.e. Batman, green lantern, v for vendetta, just a
you should cosplay as a charity lady
I like Holden Terry's suggestion. Showing Mr Kimmel that we too have a "sense of humor", my only caution would be that it wouldn't be hurtful or vindictive but educational, give'm something to think about. violence begets violence, bullying begets bullying. And who cares what he thinks. But ........
Uhmm you know they sign a paper for permission to film them and to put them on tv and if they say no and don't sign it then they don't interview them and it possibly could be fake there is no disrespect when there is permission
+Vance
First of all, you have to sign the form befóre they film you. And you don't know what they might ask.
Second, ofcourse there is disrespect when there is permission. If I ask you if you want lunch..you say yes...I then give you cooked rat with vomit-sauce...there is defineately disrespect from my side. And you can complain about my awful lunch, DESPITE the fact you clearly said you'd want my lunch.
Vance Malm I think this goes with what some other people were saying. The question, while seen as inappropriate, may not have offended some who aren't bothered by those things and they answered, but I'm sure they didn't know that they were gonna be made fun of laughed at and mocked for their answers and I think that's a problem. Especially when Dylan does reply yes to having sex in costume and Kimmel uses the "nerds are virgins" joke saying it must've been masturbation. That part made me uncomfortable.
WTF. Jimmy Kimmel does these random questions all the time to other Earthly people!!! whiich maay include Cosplayers? I mean naaaa...
Ems Yeah but it's different. I hardly see him ask a random pedestrian;' have you ever had a threesome?' and encourage the audience to laugh about the way he looks and says; 'Do we even have to ask? This guy is-' etc.
Jimmy kimmel can get a life.
take it easy man!
comon that show is funny
Ikr lol
And actually it is those cosplayers problem to answering such question. you can allways decline inappropriate question if you want to.
+Moon Moon
It's not the place, nor the time, to ask people innapropriate questions. You're intimidated on the spot, with a large camera in your face, you feel the need to defend yourself.
You said; 'It's the cosplayers problem' but whý did Kimmel cause that problem in the first place then? Are the cosplayers there to get problems? Is it problem-con?
Or is it comic-con, to enjoy themselves and have a good time?
speaks the to fox ambush style reporting rrr
