Good story and performances. At the end of the movie, the wind noise on board the ship was very loud and made it difficult to know exactly what was transpiring with the actors, but I suppose that might be expected with 1936 sound technology. I grew up watching the OLD "classics" (1930s to 1950s). Watching this one, which was "new" to me, really took me back. Thanks for posting.😊👍❤

I hope that somewhere there is a perfect print of this marvelous film. Everything with Vivian Leigh deserves a perfect print, and it would be a tragedy to loose Conrad Veidt's performance. An amazing moment when Veidt is slapped. Note his rage, almost a hark back to his silent film days, very melodramatic overacting, But then his instant recovery as a polished actor. An amazing, difficult and superbly done transition. The dialogue especially at the beginning, is witty, sophisticated, biting ,and wonderfully written and performed. There is some excellently done foreshadowing in the film which is not at all evident when it happens, and that is as it should be. It is masterfully accomplished this film. On the downside, the montage sections are hard to follow because the print is so imperfect, but they look worthwhile if they could be seen better.Altogether it's a great espionage film. Vivian Leigh...the best of the best is stunning throughout, not just her beauty, but her shining intelligence, and her ability as an actor.

I love Mata Hari movies, and this one is pretty good, although my favorite is Von Sternberg's Dishonored with Marlene Dietrich (and a horribly miscast Victor McLaglen). Vivian Leigh is terrific and well matched with Conrad Veidt. Dark and fine boned Vivian Leigh was compellingly beautiful.

Despite living in a more traditional, modest, conventional & respectful era, the TRUTH is that the beautiful, talented, classy, actress Vivian Leigh, TOO, seriously struggled with chronic alcoholism, deep depression, she committed infidelity, got divorced, etc, IIRC, it was pretty rough, she suffered a lot & was, in REALITY, far from idealistically perfect, just like everybody else. There are some good fact-based biography/history channel type-videos about Leigh's life & career here on CZcams, if you haven't already seen any. Vivian Leigh was complicated, like most people, and especially, artists, tend to be, yet, was still very wonderful, IMO, despite, or because, of IT ALL.

Her voice is what I think is so wonderful! She was a great beauty but the voice. She had a sad ending in life. If they could have turned the wind sound down a bit at the end it would have been easier to hear the dialog. Particularly since the howling wind didn't seem to show itself with Any of the hats blowing off. At that rate of gale there would Not have been a hat left on anyone's head! LOL

Vivien Leigh was well-known to British audiences by 1937; in her early 20's, she'd made this, "Storm in a Teacup" and a couple of other films there, which had some release in America prior to her signing with David O. Selznick at the last minute for a little film called "Gone With The Wind".

I disagree with this comment .... (oh we hold ourselves up to be so much more intelligent than those of past ages...)
I think that today we have much more trouble with "time" issues; even the "Iliad" mixes much older "oral" stories with Homer's current concerns, aims, warfare methods, morals, brains versus brawn issues, etcetc etc., believe me , his audiences "knew"; I think folks in the 1930s probably did care, had close relatives & photos of WWI, family stories & deaths. and all the while, hearing Hitler on the radio at that time & in the news, gearing up for another round, must have been eerie, so If movies & magazines & radio were the only forms of news & social issues & fashion & "media", how wonderful the movies must have seemed, informing while inspiring, mixing past & present in ways we "moderns" find bothersome, they wouldn't have. Also,I love the "time" fact that V. Leigh would shortly begin filming another great struggle, the American war between the states, whose set/costumes were less anachronistic, I suppose, is noteworthy... what a great actress!

Great film so far, but I had to take a break from my “dark” laughter to comment on just how the "girl" laughter starting at
minute 16 and thereafter sounds just like a brood of chickens frequently disrupted by someone stomping about in their midst. It might be the age of the sound recording further denigrated by transfer to video, but I wonder if it was
then intentional. "Gurlz" back then were so very fungible en masse and marginalized and rendered shallower than tide pools. And in the presence of a "Baron" from Germany? Absolutely fawning for attention, I guess because in real life, their very survival from meal to meal depended upon the crumbs swept from the tables of the privileged wealthy white males who still dominate the .01%...

+Thomas Goldfinch (WHEN will CZcams CORRECT this friggin' annoying GLITCH that often prevents a comment from being posted in its entirety? Anytime during this 21st century? Herein follows the completion of my previously attempted FULL comment): ...controlled 2016 American "society" ranks! My oh my, how far we’ve NOT come since the early 20th century!

I will have to go back & see what the heck you are talking about...is it anything like the girls at Beatles' concerts, you mean that kind of thing? I thought it was just emphasizing his adoration as an available bachelor, man-of-the-world, exotic, handsome (in that era) , oh, did I mention, rich? in an age of patriarchal gotta be born to it, or marry it, that's your choices, no chance of obtaining it as an independent, striving, woman. h-m-m-m another anachronism in this movie but we shouldn't let them distract us, I don't think...

Can only understand about 5% of what they say. Make that 2%. I quit at 19:05. Very grating audio and "plot." (What plot? People pop up out of nowhere.) I unsubscribed.

Sadly enough, I got so bored by minute 34 that I've given up watching the remaining minutes. Life is way too short to waste time on an ancient and boring film.
