  • Professor Michael Berk is currently an NHMRC Senior Principal Research Fellow and Alfred Deakin Chair of Psychiatry at Deakin University and Barwon Health, where he heads the IMPACT Strategic Research Centre. He holds an Honorary position at both Melbourne and Monash University and is a highly cited researcher with over 800 published papers predominantly in mood disorders. His major interests are in the discovery and implementation of novel therapies, and risk factors and prevention of psychiatric disorders.
Prof Michael Berk discusses the evidence of NAC in addiction, Autism, OCD, and in Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.
    Take-home Points
    • N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) can cross the blood-brain barrier.
    • Studies of NAC in autism have revealed negative results on the total aberrant behavior checklist.
    • Administration of NAC (within 24 hours) might be a possible future treatment for a variety of forms of trauma.

I have been taking NAC as I try to heal from years of meds and damage. I definitely feel it is helping. This is a BIG deal for people with Akathisia, because you can't heal a medication-induced injury with more meds. I did my research and NAC makes the most sense. The mercury went through breastmilk and she lost her words. After 5 days of high doses her words started tumbling back. We added in correct methylation B vitamins as well. Irritability is caused by anxiety.
Anxiety causes the release of Cortisol.
Too much production of Cortisol causes oxidative stress and damage.
Glutathione reduces the oxidative damage, therefore reducing the irritability factor.
Perhaps in reducing the damage it assists the brain in creating new neuropathways to cope with anxiety 🤔
Or something along those lines 🤷‍♀️🤔

Can't tell about others, but I was not going to comment because I'm so excited about it that I am eager to seek more info and view all those amazing testimonials that there is! :D
I have taken it about 1-2 weeks now and my condition has improved a lot.
I had cardiovascular symptoms, pains in heart, hands, legs, etc. in rest and while doing something. Also numbing limbs at night.
Risk factors include smoking tobacco+MJ and sitting too much in front of computer, meaning lack of sufficient exercise.
Those physical symptoms brought up pretty bad anxiety and medical authorities were saying it is panic attack and refused to do further examinations to exclude those typical cardiovascular diseases.
I've found out that there's lots common in symptoms of panic attack, heart problems and neuropathy so it's easy to do misdiagnose.
Can't say that it's precisely NAC that helped me, because there is many variables in my case. I have started recently to take Inosital, ALA, AlCar and GABA. Same time because they arrived as a bunch. :D I had no patience to start them one by one over time to see how each effects.
Besides of those, I have used also magnesium, B-complex, C,D, E and K2 vitamins, GSE, Niacin, Omega 3 capsules, Q10, chlorella, spirulina, chia seeds, glutamine, creatine, L-theanine and MSM. And some more. :)
Latest but least I got *serrapeptase* which gave lots of relief to those physical symptoms. I guess it's called miracle enzyme for reason!
Besides of NAC those others have definitely had effect on brain functions as well. :)

For those who are sensitive to any side effects from NAC, there is an equally effective alternative without the side effects : Setria Glutathione. Peer reviewed studies have shown that Setria Glutathione is indeed bioavailable and does substantially increase the body's glutathione levels. This may be due to availability of both direct transporters (ie. some % assimilated undigested), as well as increasing the body's concentration of the individual component peptides for the body to synthesize glutathione at equilibrium (even if some % is digested before assimilation).

I have one question which I would really appreciate if you could answer as I can't seem to find an answer online and want to speak to an expert in the NAC field... I have Pure OCD and NAC has worked a dream for me - game changer, however I also love going out drinking alcohol with my friends.. my question is I know NAC is safe to take before drinking, but how long after my last drink that night should I wait to take my next dosage of NAC (1000mg)? I have been waiting between 12-16 hours after the last drink at present..
    Thanks, Ben

It depends on the symptoms and the severity of Sx. NAC has indirect effects on mood via modulating glutamatergic systems and via immunomodulatory, inflammatory pathways. So it’s difficult to know if taking Liposomal glutathione vs NAC - which one would be better because it would need a few variables to take into account.

why wouldn’t it? i haven’t noticed any issues, i take 41mg/day. As far as addiction goes, i dunno where you are mentally, but i’m not addicted to opioids. I am physically dependent on them, but i don’t try to get high all day or anything. I smoke weed, but, you know that’s not the same. Esp cuz it takes me like a week to go through a g of dabs.
I don’t see it being a problem with methadone at all and may be helpful during any large dose decreases. I’d stock up on some for later, for that purpose. I’m dreading hitting 10mg and less, i’m gonna get any help i can.
