Danny Rand and The Hand - Iron Fist

  • Pretty much everyone agrees that Marvel/Netflix's Iron Fist was not good. There were a ton of technical problems with the show, but the biggest issue came from the Iron Fist himself. Danny Rand was unlikable.
    But could his character be somewhat redeemed if he left with some new information? What if Danny knew that The Hand was operating out of Rand Industries before he left?

      I swear. I love this channel, but come april 1st he's going to do a video about how every main character is probably a skrull and why it works. And it's going to turn out so good that it's going to convince everyone that it's true. To the point where we can no longer watch the MCU without seeing why skrull ironman/cap/spiderman/etc. would do something like that.

      I also don't think that you need the Harold Meecham plot. Make Ward a semi-bad guy (he tries to have Danny killed, is crooked, etc.) and when Danny destroys him at the end (which ousts Ward and Joy), Joy Meechum suddenly has a *good* reason to want Danny dead: she helped Danny return with the whole ashtray thing and, in return, he destroyed her family.
      Edit: also, it's Davos, not Danny, that needed to see K'un-Lun gone. As it is, even Davos has no real reason to want Danny dead. So, now you have a Davos pissed about Danny leaving K'un-Lun to be destroyed, and a very wealthy Joy Meechum pissed about Danny destroying her family and career... and you have the perfect setup for a Steel Serpent.

    In my opinion, the worst and most destructive part of the show is the fact that there was even a prophecy. If they never wrote in a prophecy, Danny Rand would have actually been able to breath as his own character, like he did in the first couple of episodes, instead of cringing around with a false sense of entitlement and responsibility.
    Actually, the Hand and its contrived prophecy are the very worst part of the entire Netflix universe. Prophecies are actually the most annoying cliche.

      Adil Dnk marvel studios never really wanted an Inhumans movie. The guy who was the head of the council that used to oversee marvel studios films before Kevin Feige was given complete creative control [i forget the dude’s name] had a strange obsession with the characters. He was eventually fired and forced to move to head of the marvel tv division. I think the guy was a little too eager to get the Inhumans out there and as a result he put Scott Buck- a man known for being able to get things out as fast as he can- behind the wheel and the result was a complete misrepresentation of the source material. Thankfully it was all burned along with all memory of it ever existing

    A big problem with Defenders and the Netflix shows in general is that the writers from the different shows do not really talk to each other or plan things out. The Defenders showrunner outright said that each show was just doing their own thing and they were just picking up plot threads from the other shows and making stuff up with no long term plan.
    That's why so much of Madame Gao's plot don't fit with the Hand. Look at season 1 of Daredevil. Gao had no problem with Fisk betraying Nobu. She even warned Fisk that Nobu's clan will remember his treachery. There was also that line about how she was going back home, a place much farther than China, suggesting that she wasn't of this world. Then in season 2 of Daredevil, Gao even offers to tell Matt about the Hand.

    As I plowed anxiously through season one looking for something justifying all the shortcomings, I also sort of hoped for a very specific, but also very cool thing: I wished they would’ve shown Danny punching something or someone related to The Hand really hard with the power of the Iron Fist, right after saying “Talk to the hand”.
    I mean, it is a show called Iron Fist, about a hero whose power is punching hard, and he fights ninjas known as The Hand. That line could’ve come from any of those and it would’ve fit perfectly. I’m sure a talented scriptwriter could’ve found a way to insert it into the show with style and good timing.

    Aang from Airbender should have been the template for Danny. Boyish, naive, optimistic.

    • @davidbjacobs3598
      @davidbjacobs3598 Před 6 lety +46

      Aang also ran away from his duties. But he did so because he was a scared kid who had the weight of the world thrust on him before he was ready.
      I actually think Danny's selfishness in running away could have worked, but it wasn't set up well. We know he spent the past twenty (or whatever it was) years training to be the Iron Fist. He had already accepted his duties. He was good at it. And then he just... changed his mind. It's a bizarre 180 which doesn't make internal sense. We needed more development: WHY did Danny choose to become the Iron Fist? What was he expecting to gain from it? Was it thrust upon him in some way, like it was with Aang? And then: what did he LOSE from becoming Iron Fist? "He was bored" is a terrible reason. Maybe he'd been led to doubt the existence of The Hand. Maybe the mentor he found in K'un L'un was taken from him (again, like Aang) or betrayed him in some way. Whatever it is, he needed to be convinced that: (1) being Iron Fist sucks (in some relatable way), and (2) he needed to be reminded of the life he'd left behind. Now, when the opportunity comes about for him to leave K'un L'un, and opportunity he has to act on immediately and impulsively or it will pass forever, he takes it. And then he has to regret that decision. Even immediately.

    • @BBmetalhead04

      Yea I always thought he would be like the Spiderman of the Defenders. Fun, Lovable in an annoying little brother sort of way. You got a small taste of what he could have been in the dinner scene when he's tasting dumplings with Jess, Luke and Matt. They should have had more stuff like that. What's really sad is the actor Finn is alot more light hearted and playful than the character he's playing.

    Honestly, I had a more drastic idea for changing the show.
    1) we get more substantial flashbacks to Kun Lun. Sure, this probably would have raised the budget significantly, but I'm sure they could have found some way to do stuff like show us the scene with Danny and his friends having fun or his challenging training with the monks. Which leads me to the second point...
    2) He was forced to train to become Iron Fist. It always struck me as perplexing that Danny both wanted to go back home and wanted to become Iron Fist, a position that would require him to stay in Kun Lun for the rest of his life. So instead, we'll make it so all residents train to become Iron Fist because anyone can potentially be chosen. Danny needs to go through this training or else be cast out and it's seemingly luck that he becomes Iron Fist. Of course he hates this though eventually uses the power as part of his escape because...
    3) he's leaving to get revenge. Honestly, I have no idea why they changed the origin to something so complex other than to make the Hand more relevant to the story but that's going out the window. The Rands were looking for Kun Lun with Harold Meachum only for Harold to betray them, leading to the deaths of the Rand parents. Danny is coming for revenge. Pure and simple with the first episode being how Danny slowly infiltrates the company then dons his robes (and mask) to take out Harold only to learn of his cancer and that he's dying. Realizing from that moment he agrees to let Harold live, only for him to mysteriously die the next day. This forces Danny to take an actual position with the company as part of the Meachum's plan to clear his name, but the question is, who killed Harold? The answer being...
    4) The monks of Kun Lun are the villains. This could also include Davos as well. You see, the monks were so furious with Danny's selfish decision that they tracked him down and are slowly killing people around Danny in order to force him to come back. All Danny can do is slowly fight them back. This is where the heart of the series lies. It's about family. He at first thinks that his family is dead and tries to avenge them not realizing that he's abandoning people who saw him as family. And over the course of the series, Danny sees his family in the Meachums, the employees of Rand, and several residents of the city. So he learns this is where he should stand. Granted you can still have the idea of part of his destiny as Iron Fist being to destroy the Hand, but make that part of the ending and not a component of the series.

    Am I the only one who thinks it's really, really stupid of Marvel to be going ahead with season 2's of both Iron Fist and Luke Cage, instead of just combining them and doing a season of "Luke Cage & Iron Fist"? I mean maybe other people liked Luke Cage season 1 more than I did, but they were both just so flat and boring, I think giving them each other to play off of could really fix both series. Plus you have the perfect excuse to combine them, as their best stuff in the comics was always as a duo. Just seems like a real wasted opportunity

    • @Patrick-pc3vq

      Butt Soup They really should have combined the two shows into a Heroes For Hire show. A) Compared to other shows Luke Cage and Iron Fist are the worst Marvel Netflix shows B) It would lower the amount of shows that had to be worked on by Marvel TV division opening up opportunities for more Marvel shows on Netflix (Moon Knight, Blade, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Ghost Rider spin-off show etc.).

      The first episode of Inhumans did a pretty good job depicting Maximum as the underdog rather than the villain. Most of the show unintentionally makes the Royal Family appear like entitled tyrants, but then they flip it and just make it that Maximus is power hungry and evil and the Royal Family are the good guys. But what if it was framed differently? What if the theme of the show was Maximus being in the right, and the Royal Family having to make amends and relinquish their privilege for the better of their people? Instead of like, no theme at all.

      L - Boi As an actor and a writer, watching Finn Jones grunt and whine his way through this series was doubly grating for me. I think most of the issues lie in his personal performance though, as well as how he was directed. The character is a liiittle better in Defenders because everyone gets to make fun of him, but I think they still made Danny Rand way too self-important.

    • @uglyguy2519
      @uglyguy2519 Před 6 lety +4

      The idea is really amazing, but they could also have simply followed the comics. It was like this:
      Instead of the plane crash, the Rand family and Harold were hiking to K'un Lun because Danny's father Wendell knew the city and wanted to live there with them.
      CHANGE: The way K'un Lun is found makes sense, rather than being reached in the luckiest and most convenient way ever.
      Harold makes Wendell fall to his death in front of Danny and his mother Heather, who were unable to stop him. Harold tells Heather he loves her and tells them to follow him, but she says no, he abandons them. Heather and Danny find the entrance to K'un Lun but she allows a pack of wolves to attack her in order to save Danny.
      CHANGE: Danny knows Harold was the responsible for his parents' death since the beginning, so rather than spending an entire season looking for the killer, that's the first thing he'll do once he gets to NY.
      Danny is rescued by K'un Lunan guards, who bring him to Yu-Ti, the city's emperor. Yu-Ti offers Danny a wish, and Danny tells him that all he wants is revenge. Yu-Ti assigns Danny as a student of Lei Kung the Thunderer, K'un Lun's martial arts master, in hopes that the training will eventually make Danny forget his desire for revenge. It doesn't.
      CHANGE: Danny's desire to leave K'un Lun is much more compelling here. This Danny has a well defined reason to make the choices he makes, rather than just assuming any random thing will make him feel whole.
      Danny trains kung fu for years, also punching buckets of sand, then gravel, then rock to make his fists more resistant and immune to pain. It's still not enough for him, and because he emerged as the finest warrior, Yu-Ti allowed him to go to the cave of the dragon Shou-Lao to acquire the power of an Iron Fist. He later undergoes the Challenge of the Many (against four masters of kung fu) and the Challenge of the One (against the massive robot Shu-Hu, who could only be defeated by the Iron Fist itself) before Yu-Ti and the Dragon Lords, who deem him worthy of his powers and an accomplished Iron Fist.
      CHANGE: All of this is awesome and should've been included in the show to give us an idea of how skilled Danny is.
      Yu-Ti tells Danny that the day when he can return to Earth approaches, and he will have to make a choice: to remain in K'un Lun and eat the Fruit of Immortality or to leave the city and perish eventually. Danny can't overcome his desire for revenge and chooses to leave.
      CHANGE: No stupid rules like "the Iron Fist cannot leave K'un Lun" or "the Iron Fist has to kill for K'un Lun" here. They were clearly only invented to make Danny look even more incompetent in the show, as they make no sense when you really think about it.
      In NY, Danny goes after Harold and faces all sort of enemy because of a 10 thousand dollar bounty put on the man with the dragon mark. He is triumphant and eventually reaches Harold.
      CHANGE: Awesome martial arts since very early in the show. Also, this Danny is still driven by anger and revenge, but in a focused and calculated way that is in tone with his years of training, not in a psychotic, uncontrolled and immature way that contrasts his life in a Buddhist monastery.
      Danny confronts Harold only to find out he lost his legs to frostbite in the mountains years ago, and lives in pain. Harold asks for death, but Danny denies it only for a ninja to enter the room, kill Harold before Danny's eyes and leave. Joy enters the room and blames Iron Fist for her father's death, and Iron Fist has to escape it in a hurry.
      CHANGE: Danny learns how poisonous revenge is much earlier: this whole arc could've taken 1-2 episodes with the season being used for a much more balanced and enlightened Danny Rand.
      Danny meets Colleen, who was sent to find him by her father Lee Wing. Lee is a professor of Oriental studies in a university who had been told of the Iron Fist and his imminent arrival to NY. Thus began many of Iron Fist's adventures.
      CHANGE: First meeting that is way more interesting than "giving money to the tai chi hobo", huh?

      @SamuraiShampoo___ Před 6 lety +4

      Uglyguy 25 I also think it would’ve been interesting to essentially make Danny a zenned out hippie with a mean switch. Which they sort of start doing in that first episode, when he shows up to his company all smiles. But then he’s just petulant for the rest of the series and it’s so aggravating to watch. He should be the most easy-going Defender. And now instead of them being close friends and equals, Luke Cage is this weird surrogate father figure to Danny.

    • @uglyguy2519
      @uglyguy2519 Před 6 lety +6

      Momo King
      Exactly! Danny should've been the coolest Defender in the sense that he almost never gets stressed at anything. His superpower is channeling life energy and positive energies, meaning that a cool attitude is essential for his powers to work. That is the positive aspect of a younger protagonist that the season should've focused on: optimism, lightness and fun, rather than making him angry and unsure about anything he does.
      And you know what's the worst part? Finn Jones is exactly like that in real life. Look for interviews with him, even the ones about the Marvel shows: he's got this spontaneous positive attitude and is always making things so much fun. He said that he was attracted to Iron Fist because he always wanted to play a spiritually connected character, and described the day he was confirmed for the role as something like a dream. On top of that, he's an orphan. So except for being really skinny, this guy is perfect for the role. Every time they make Danny Rand hot headed and overly serious, they aren't just twisting the source material: they're wasting their star's best attributes.
      Making Luke his mentor in The Defenders was also stupid. Obviously a mutual change of knowledge between the two of them would've been much more interesting, but I guess the internet can't accept a friendship between a white man and a black man in which the black one isn't superior, right? It sucked for Danny, who had to keep being immature for the mentorship to work, but it also sucked for Luke, the last Defender who would need an annoying man-child by his side all the time to look wise.

    I really like these ideas.
    - Danny having to debate sacrificing his morals would make for interesting character writing.
    - Danny having a strong plot motivation (i.e. running the company to sort out the Hand's involvement with it) would sort out my main problem with the series which was its directionless feel (it didn't seem to know where it was going throughout and therefore, dramatic events didn't have the impact they probably should have had). It might also lead to more interesting debate between him and his friend (currently, I think that's probably the least effective point in the series).
    - That ending would also be interesting. It would be questionable though because the Hand would have effectively defeated themselves through that series which could make them seem idiotic.
    Also, I'd be interested to know if you have any fixes for 'The Defenders' because as effective as it is to tease the dramatic intent of the Hand, I found what they actually needed him for in 'The Defenders' a bit disappointing.

      Oh wow, I think 'Inhumans' would need a lot of work. Weak acting and boring characterisation aside, it had a simply boring plot (they spend virtually the whole time wandering about the Earth looking for each other; a bit similar to 'The Defenders' where they spend half the series just getting the characters together). I look forward to all of those videos.

    Also, I wish Netflix/Marvel did more with Iron Fist's powers. He's got probably the most unique powers of all the defenders and he's just using it to punch through walls and break stuff... Makes it feel like, imo, he's just using it for convinience and not for "DESTROYING THE HAND"! I hope that in the next season he learns how to tap into to the power a little deeper and give it more of a "Glow/Energy" effect and see him punch people through walls, see him punch cars that are about to crash into him, see him do ANYTHING with his super power.... But nah. All you see him do is use it once or twice and then you see him do his Super Kung Fuu
