Welcome, and thanks for being here for another video at the Merriam Pianos CZcams channel. Today we’ll be taking a deep dive into the Casio Privia PX-770 home digital piano.
The PX-770 has all of the hallmarks of a home digital piano with an 88 note, touch sensitive weighted keyboard, beautiful cabinet and integrated triple pedal system.
If this is the first time to the Merriam Pianos channel, please subscribe, we’d really appreciate the support!
    Sound Engine:
The PX-770 uses a lot of the same technology you’ll find in other parts of the Casio line, For starters, there’s 128 note polyphony which is more than enough for solo piano playing. There’s a solid 16 watt double speaker system, powered by Casio’s AiR tone generator. The AiR tone generator has been very successful for Casio, firmly establishing them as a viable mid-range competitor to the ‘Big 3’ of Kawai, Roland and Yamaha.
There’s 19 on-board sounds here, including various acoustic piano, E pianos and various other tones. The acoustic piano tones are really satisfying, whereas some of the other tones do leave something to be desired. That being said, anyone looking for a digital piano to be primarily used on the acoustic piano settings should be happy with this.
    Piano Action:
The action found in PX-770 is one of the highlights of the instrument. Casio’s refers to the action as 88-key, Tri-sensor Scaled Hammer Action Keyboard II, with simulated ebony and ivory keys. This action is a huge improvement over what Casio has put out in the past, even the most recent generation.
The texture is a bit exaggerated on the white keys but feels good overall, whereas the texture on the black keys feels very close to a real acoustic piano. This is an action I’d be perfectly comfortable playing for hours on end without issue.
    Features:
The Concert Play feature found here is definitely worth highlighting. Concert Play allows you to play along with or just listen to preloaded tracks of famous classical works, with full symphony. There’s also a fairly large library of preloaded piano works.
There’s of course also a metronome, transpose, split and the ability to adjust the touch curve. The case is really sleek and doesn’t take up too much, with a lean, modern look.
    Conclusions:
Overall, Casio has done a really good job here with the PX-770. It competes well with the offerings from the ‘Big 3’ and really serves as a viable alternative, for a slightly lower cost.

I started as a classical Suzuki piano student when I was 3, and went through RCM Conservatory until about 15 and got my performance diploma, then I was a choir accompanist and a church organist for 5 years, then off to Jazz Performance Degree at U of T, and from there a mix of jazz, R&B, classical, and musical theatre work in live performance, touring, and studio work. Cheers!

It's great for piano reviews as on\e can tell if any given instrument is suitable for professional playing or not. It's nice that you are generally positive about all the instruments you play. The market is becoming loaded with instruments that are all quite good. I would take any of these pianos over the spinets of yesteryear.

I have this specific model. It outputs far better sound than what you're ever going to hear through the onboard speakers. I have mine going through a 200 watt receiver/amp by using a splitter cable going from the headphone jack and going out to stereo speakers that are on tray tables in front of the piano lying on their back and pointed toward the ceiling - two sets of speakers actually - one larger set for the bass and midrange, one set that's oriented toward the treble end. Besides having much greater ability to cover the acoustic spectrum than the onboard speakers, having them in front and pointed upward is more akin to how a real grand piano produces sound. Sort of a poor man's NX3 Avant Grand. I would say my method above is better than hearing it through headphones - obviously what you're hearing in this demo is off the headphone jack and though very clear it sounds kind of dry and emphasizes the artificiality, there's no ambient "room" mixing of the sound as with how you hear a real piano. It would be great if it had an actual dedicated line level output to do this. Just be aware that no digital piano no matter the cost, no matter how well the samples were recorded can truly mimic the live ambient sound of an acoustic piano.

@@dettrock8951 I wondered the same, I tried both extensively side by side. The FP30 is a slightly better unit but it has no stand or pedals, you obviously end up paying for the stand (quality one) on the Casio. The piano sound is more convincing on the FP30 and you have a bit more settings. The feel is really similar and good on both it's actually hard to make a difference between the 2, buying an aftermarket stand and set of pedal for the FP30 will make it less attractive imo. If you want something to play at home and look tidy and good get the Casio. I bought the Casio for this reason. You can't go wrong either way.
