  • The little town of Mittenwald is located in southern Bavaria on the border with Austria. Never heard of it? Then you're probably not a violinist. Musicians have been familiar with the name Mittenwald for centuries - because of the town's violin-making tradition. Only nine workshops survive, but they all produce stringed instruments of supreme quality. They sell their hand-crafted pieces to customers all over the world including Asia and the United States. We met a young violin maker who's perpetuating the tradition and leading it proudly into the future.

I love seeing family businesses running and successful and been passed over to generations. That is such an important thing to sustain a business all those years

A very good colleague has a Mittenwald and I have a 1913 Eduard Reichert. They are like chalk and cheese. My violin(s) are no duds but the Mittenwald is just a real step up. They have a great tone, are really easy to play and seem to want to be played. I'd like to get one for myself one day. Good video !!

She will use spruce grown in high alps for the top plate and likely maple from Bosnia for the belly. The ribs and inner linings are also from maple wood. The finger board and tail piece are usually made of EBONY.
