The Thiruvempavai (Tamil: திருவெம்பாவை, Tiruvempāvai) a collection of twenty hymns, composed by the poet and saint, Manikkavācakar.
It consists of 20 stanzas devoted to the Lord Shiva. It forms part of the collection called Thiruvāsagam, and the 8th book of the Thirumurai, a canonical text of the Tamil Saiva Siddhanta.
The twenty songs of Thiruvempaavai and ten songs of Tiruppalliezhuchi on the Tirupperunturai Lord are sung all over Tamil Nadu in the holy month of Margazhi (The ninth month of the Tamil calendar, December and January) .
Devotees go to Shiva temple very early in the morning to sing songs to Shiva in order to wake him up. The 20 stanzas are sung, one on every day and then followed by the 10 songs of the Thiruppalliyezhucchi.
In Thiruvempaavai, he has imagined himself as a woman following the Paavai Nonbu and praising Shiva. The songs form part of the Pāvai ritual for unmarried young girls during the Tamil month of Margazhi.
