Actually, there’s also the subcontrabass and I think a double contrabass. Plus Jelle Hogenhuis built a very very low flute the size of a small car. I was so lucky to meet him ~ 2018 ~ in Amsterdam. You see, he sold me a “Diadeem” Cobtrabass in 2016; my husband and I were traveling there, so I emailed him to see if we might meet? Fabulous couple of hours with him. He’d told me that the really enormous low flute was not audible in its low range; what it effected, though, was to vibrate the walls, becoming the lowest vibrations (the fundamentals) of notes being played by other flutists in the room. Contrabass flute is my dream instrument! I only play euphonium violin and trombone right now, but I hope one day I’ll be able to rent or even buy one! Great video!
Your tone is amazing and the playing is great. I played this on clarinet and it was very hard to get good tone in some passages. It must have taken long to play it like this. Well done!
Info: We have a bassoon player that does base flute when she is sick to not infect the reed. We have a newer flute player that adores her and asks about the base flute. We where talking about the flute family today and especially the pic and contra base flute
They probably shouldn't have given the highest instrument a low counterpart, compare this to a Subcontrabass saxophone which I believe is an octave below the piano.
Be sure to check out compositions by Jelle Hogenhuis. I may have a couple from music he gave me when we met. [Because of course, what do 2 flutists do when they get together? They play duets. He gave me a couple of flute ensemble pieces, too.]
@stonwall9065 The only time I've ever seen a bass flute being played was in a performance by Andreas Vollenweider on "The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson" back in the late 70s. I love these unusual incarnations of flutes, but I'm not sure where else a bass or contrabass flute might be required, but even symphony orchestras probably could not use them since they can't be heard without some serious amplification. Alto flutes usually fill the bill of a low flute voice pretty adequately.
Are you studying this as a master's project? Do you intend to arrange repertoire for it? Is there already an extensive body of work for it? I'm very impressed
It is not an official Masters project, but it is part of my Masters work. There is a fair amount of flute choir repertoire, but not so many solos. However, the repertoire is growing!

Have you ever lied? stolen? hated? been prideful? gossiped? swore? Or other bad things? I Can say without a doubt we’ve at least done something that was considered bad, consciously that we shouldn’t have done. this is called sin. It’s the act of doing something against what God wants in our lives. Think about this. You have just invited someone over to your house, and that means you can place rules on what they do - because it’s your home! Now lets say this said person directly disobeyed the rules you’ve placed while they were there. you would be offended right? This is exactly the situation with us and God. We are the person staying over in His creation, yet we consciously disobey- which is called Sin. We all have this problem and because of this God has to send us to hell because He is so just can’t just let these wrong doings pass. Think of it as a guilty criminal having to be sentenced to jail because the Judge knows it’s right. We are the guilty criminal. Hell is our punishment. And God is that Judge. Well, this would mean that everyone would go to hell because we’ve all committed sin-disobedience from God, consciously. But here’s the good news. Jesus came to die on the cross, taking our punishment upon Himself, for our sins so we don’t need to go to hell. Think of that same analogy with the criminal. Now there is a person that’s willing to bail that criminal out and if that criminal accept that gift of bail, then they will be able to legally be free. If we accept that, Jesus died on the cross for our sins and repent- turn away from sin-then we will be saved because we take His bail that He offers for free so we can go to heaven.
JESUS was sent down-never sinned- took our punishment FOR US on the cross so we wouldn’t go to hell if we just repent-turn away from sin and believe in Him!
The contrabass looks like I could trust it as my weapon if choice in WW3

I wouldn't have believed that the lowest note on the piccolo could be played on the contrabass
It still can't do it
Cuz it wasnt. She went lower for the top note and it didnt have the greatest tone

I use the contrabass flute to do my morning pullups and hang-dry my washables.
