Why Playing Spider-Man Broke Andrew Garfield’s Heart

    Andrew Garfield discussed his struggle with coming to terms with big-budget movies during an interview with Amy Adams for Variety‘s “Actors on Actors.”
    Garfield said that his experience filming “The Amazing Spider-Man” taught him that story and character are unfortunately not always “top of the priority list.”
    “I found that really, really tricky. I signed up to serve the story, and to serve this incredible character that I’ve been dressing as since I was three, and then it gets compromised and it breaks your heart,” he said. “I got heartbroken a little bit to a certain degree.”
    The interview will air in its entirety on Variety‘s “Actors on Actors” Season 5, presented by The Venetian Las Vegas, which debuts on PBS SoCal on Jan. 3.

In fact, plot is not all that makes a film great. The cast of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is enough to make both of those films great for me. No Way Home gave him some really good moments. His acting showcasing his heartbreak and grief over losing Gwen Stacy and earnestly not wanting Holland's Spiderman to become dark and bitter like he did was powerful. Tobey being involved was all nostalgia but Andrew was the best part of the returns imo because every angle to his arc was pure emotion, even in the little moments such as gazing wistfully at Zendaya and Tom in the lab. No matter the flaws with the Andrew Garfield films, even its harshest critics acknowledged that they nailed the romantic drama aspect of it so here it really rings true when Andrew wonderfully sells the despair of the loss of Gwen Stacy. I believe that Garfield out of the 3 is still by far the best when it comes to showing Peter Parker at his most vulnerable. There is a dark intensity that the other 2 cannot match as much as I like their portrayals.

They told Marc Webb things to do, that Marc Webb didn’t want. Look at the Raimi Trilogy. Spider-Man 1 & 2 were great movies and heartfelt, and why? Because it was Sam‘s vision, a directors vision. However, in Spider-Man 3, the movie that is considered to be the worst one in the Trilogy, failed mainly because of Venom, and who wanted Venom to be in this one? Sony.

      Yeah, not surprising. People forget that the driving force (at least the main initial one) behind the Amazing Spider-Man movies was the studio wanting to keep the rights to the character and not because they suddenly felt inspired and came up with some comprehensive plan for the character. It was a bit of a desperation move, which it's never a good base to build a whole franchise on.

    • @Aggelostououranou
      @Aggelostououranou Před 7 lety +27

      Yeah....So unfortunate really. It's not his fault at all too. The studio just fucked up so hard. Directors, Producers, writers, those are the people responsible for that mess. They had a goldmine on their hands with the Spiderman franchise AND a wonderful cast with Andrew and Emma but they fucked it all up. Andrew and Emma's chemistry was undeniable, they were an amazing on screen couple and that is something imo the original spiderman movies lacked severely.
      I love the first movie, the second one was kinda garbage but overall I'm really sad the third one got cancelled because I really liked Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spiderman and after Gwen Stacy's death it would be EXTREMELY interesting to see where Peter Parker's character would go from there and how would he once again deal with the loss of someone really important. All and all I think they should've "finish" the story on a third movie and round out the trilogy and not leave it on a cliffhanger...

    • @tarnishedone4746
      @tarnishedone4746 Před 7 lety +48

      I actually wouldn't blame the director Marc Webb for what those films turned into, I mean clearly they chose him for a reason. I feel like the original vision for the film was meant to be more focused on Peter and Gwen and their relationship, thus bring in the director of 500 Days of Summer, a movie about a complicated relationship. And you can actually really feel it in the first movie, it feels like it wants to concentrate on just them but of course Sony had get their hands involved and take creative control away. "No we want backstory on his parents, an elongated vigilante story about tracking down Uncle Ben's killer, the Lizard, setting up The Green Goblin and the Sinister 6, ALL IN THIS MOVIE."
      If Sony had stayed out of the creative process we could've had a really heart felt and emotionally driven Spider-Man film, where the superhero antics have massive weight on Peter and Gwen together (which would've culminated in her death in Amazing Spider-Man 2).
      Still makes me sad thinking about it.

      These huge studio movies are how actors really make their money. The small stuff can add up sometimes, but whenever someone offering a part in a tentpole movie calls you up, it's a big deal. Even if the script is shit and the director's a hack. You keep your mouth shut, you nod politely and hope the movie makes enough money to offset the scathing critical reviews that may harm your career.

      It's more of a problem with Hollywood itself than the actors. I believe many actors wished they were in the experimental era of Hollywood where artistic integrity was still mainstream and no CGI blockbusters existed. I always feel a bit sorry for Andrew. I had absolutely no problem with his performance in both films. He was quite wonderful, but unfortunately he will always have the stigma of being Spider-man in an aborted franchise. Sony really screwed that one up real bad. They didn't learn a thing about what people disliked about Spider-man 3 with the multiple villains and convoluted stories and the doubled down on it by making the entire film an advertisement for future films in the series which makes it even more embarrassing to watch now given how everything ended up. But Garfield and Stone are blameless in their work during the series in my opinion.

    Felt bad for him tbh since he grew up reading the spider man comics and really cared about his craft. He was the only thing that was good about both the movies and it sucks that the actor is blamed for what the writers and director did. After watching NWH, he still played perfect and the writers legit did great as well. He doesn’t deserve any hate for what for those amazing spider man movies

      DBOG Yeah! I'd love Garfield to be an older Holland warning him to save the chearleader *cough* I mean Gwen Stacy.
      Better if he says "she's the only one you'll ever love" right in the middle of Holland's date with that universe's Mary Jane.
      BOOM

    “The sheer emotion Andrew brings to the character transcends the studio’s determination to bring the quality of the films down”
