Curious about New Game Plus and the removal of previous Completionist episodes? The answers are in my update video: • The Future Of The Comp...
Super Metroid is a game I probably complete passively once a week. I'm a huge fan of the Metroid games, I love seeing Samus Aran back in the mainstream spotlight, and I feel like it's been time to officially revisit this game for New Game Plus. Now to get all the endings there's some challenges to complete, that don't include item collection. One of the harder ones might be playing for more than 10 hours to beat it, whereas I can effectively so a Super Metroid speenrun now. But hey, let's jump into this classic game from the snes!
Let me know what you thought about my Super Metroid review! Also let me know what other games I should re-complete for New Game Plus!

What game do you re-complete the most?
Hmmmm. I don’t know. But if I had to pick a game to complete every year, I’d go with Ape Escape 3
The Completionist Portal/2
Spider-Man PS4. Always Fun To Do No Matter How Many Times I Do :3
For me, its a series. I play through Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 (with all expansions) at least twice a year. Its my favorite game series of all time. I might be legit addicted.
I have literally beat Bloodborne 20 times
Even some (nearly) 30 years later, the graphical jump from the NES to the SNES era continues to be one of the most impressive console generation differences I've ever seen.
I think it still looks really good even today the sprites are amazing, i bet if it would come out let's say tomorrow by an indie dev it would be an instant classic.
I would say there are only two truly impressive visual leaps generation to generation: NES to SNES/Genesis and N64/Playstation/Saturn to PS2/Gamecube/Xbox. SNES/Genesis to N64/Playstation/Saturn is...generally, kind of a downgrade, visually. 3D being pulled off at all was impressive, sure, but there's a reason the games that hold up best visually released for the first 3D capable generation of consoles are Symphony of the Night and Mega Man X, and I'm honestly surprised 3D wasn't more of an outlier until the PS2 era.
I was born in '96, so I totally missed the SNES days. However, that hasn't stopped me from calling it the most impressive console in modern gaming history. It's so good dude.
It was a whole new level of quality in more ways than that! It brought consistency to gaming. Sega Genesis and NES connection cables had a lot of static and play in them. SNES was the first one to actually use quality wires... plus NES games had tons of glitches and other issues like sprite flickering that you don't see anymore once SNES came out
I love SNES games... It has one of the best game libraries of any console

Super metroid is a timeless classic.
Oh
Just like another game that is overrated in fact both games are overrated wanna know those two games? OoT and super metroid one is confusing unless you know how to do all the speed run tricks and one is boring once you beat it
@@devilbowser253In your personal opinion. Quit bashing them as if they're objectively bad
@@SintasSays I know a lot of people like OoT and super metroid but in my opinion OoT is overrated and I actually do like super metroid I just think that its unfair that people making the walkthrough think "oh hey if they are watching this they must know all the tricks" and I am still stuck because I can't wall jump
Gotta agree to be honest, Zelda OoT felt really boring in general, I quit after getting the Master Sword because it just didn't feel worth it or much fun to myself. I felt better playing Wind Waker or A Link to the Past, which I absolutely love. Never got around to properly finishing Super Metroid though, 100%-ing it feels like a chore to me.
Well, I played this for the first time last week. My son (who's 7) and I burned through this in about 9 hours.
I can't believe how good it was. Truly a masterpiece. I've been a lifelong Zelda fan and I gotta give this one the award for the best 16 bit game I've ever played.
I never got to finish it. I always somehow get lost in these games and end up stop playing them. I am probably going to pick up a metroid game again

Super Metroid is my favorite game of all time. I even got the Samus logo tattooed on my right wrist! Man, seeing this video brought me back some great memories.
It’s finally here!!!! I’ve been waiting for this episode ever since you announced New Game Plus!! I love Super Metroid, and always loved watching the original video, and now I can watch the new version again and again! Thanks Completionist!!
Haha same here. Been really looking forward to this one!
Born in '83 playing it now for the first time as my first Metroid title. It's phenomenal. 💟
Easily one of my absolute favorites. Super Metroid is one of the most finely crafted and well thought out video games of all time.
*the* most
The recharge station in south Branistar makes no sense. When you use the boots at the pink area and fall down, the ostrich teaching you the boost jump which hurts you when you hit something. Why have a recharge for full health if you have to get hurt just to get out of the area? Learning to wall jump the first time is really annoying. Once you understand the exact timing to push the buttons, then it is not so bad.
Game is still great, but not as good as people remember it.
@@laurenriley2943 As for wall jumps, yes, they can be a bit finnicky. But it is easily forgiven because at no point in the game are they mandatory to use, unless you get stuck in that one hole. Also, it is pretty easy to do after some practice.
@@laurenriley2943 no.. it's still one of the greatest. I really dont think that a couple of "flaws" makes it stray from that. Plus, none of those things are even mandatory.
Also, that Ostrich is called a Dachora... just saying.😅
The recharge station is actually good game design. It's there so that if you're out of energy, you're not stuck in there for all eternity because the shinespark needs energy to work.
And the walljump's a secret optional technique to reward skilled players. There's no reason it needs to be beginner-friendly. If players can't teach themselves it, they should wait for the Space Jump.
Knowing Jirard, I do not doubt there's some new way he finds to play this game almost every week. The dude loves his Super Metroid.
Not as much as he loves hoarding donations meant for cancer patients!

This is the 1st half of how metroidvania came to be and perfected. This game is a masterclass game on the snes, and one of the greatest games period. The atmosphere, the music, the enemies, the bosses, the sense of DREAD and exploration. All wrapped in a epic tale of a lone bounty hunter in her massive quest to rescue the baby Metroid from the grips of Mother brain, Ridley, and the space pirates. With this game is speedrun friendly, this is a must play multiple times!
I recommend that everyone should play super Metroid. It is the best game ever made.
Best game ever is a bit if a stretch but definitely one of them.
Guess what?
JIRARD DID ACTUALLY SAVE THE ALIENS; TAKE THAT, OL' MAN SNITCHEZ!!!!!

Yeah I'm pretty over it. I'm already burned out on the game and I've never even installed it.
I got a SNES mini for Christmas last year, and the first game I played and finished on its collection was Super Metroid. While I knew it was a classic game, I was blown away by just how compelling it was. It’s amazing how this game, despite how old it is, absolutely nails what it sets out to do. The gameplay, the difficulty, the atmosphere. Everything is perfect. One of my absolute favourite games of the year, and it’s a game that came out years ago.
Safe to say, I am now a fan of the Metroid series.
One of the best games ever made.
This game contains some of the Best music and atmosphere. I don't think i've ever had a game take me from where i am and place me where It is so completely and so easily. Super Metroid will always be special
Jirard’s passion for this game makes me want to replay it! Awesome video!
12:24 Have you ever turned into a ball.......ON WEED!?
I remember me and my dad picking my brother up from his friends house and he told me he went to a pawn shop and bought a game, wasn't excited at all until he pulled it out of his pocket and I saw the label, I couldn't wait for him to play so I could have a go. This takes me back to when I was 10 or 11 and had the Nintendo Power strategy guide. I had the game over summer vacation and when I wasn't playing it, I was just leafing through the guide. On the whole, I played more of the Mario and Sonic-style platformers, because of how easy they were to pick up and leave off (playing and replaying a game as big as Super Metroid was asking too much for a kids' attention span) but for those few weeks I was completely sucked in. Thanks for that trip down memory lane!
I’ve never played a Metroid game, but your obvious love for the series makes the videos you do on them some of my favorites

To be fair, Jirard didn't have to, he was just cautious and didn't want a possible legal battle he could've won.
What happened?
@@chaoticantboy1847 Ya, they got into a big fight and it ended up getting legally so jirad either had to take down everything with him in it, or go to court and fight so what he did was he gave everyone a week to download, share, etc the videos and then they would all be taken down

When I got my SNES out of storage for my kids to play (who am I kidding, I haven't stopped playing it for a year straight now), the first game i told them to play was Super Metroid. They didn't understand it at first and said it was stupid. Then I showed them a little bit of the game and some of the items you can get. After they both completed it, I was forced to buy them every Metroid game possible. They love the SNES games more than the new ones now.

You will still anger the internet this time for calling the animals "the aliens."
Edit:15:34 of course you call them the animals at the very end.
Also "super dash" instead of speed booster triggered me a bit.
They are aliens.
@@Bobb11881 But the most common name for them are "the animals." It's not like gdq has a vote for saving or killing "the aliens." No, It's for saving or killing "the animals."
@Carl Glennerster BUT WHY DO YOU KILL THEM?
I have always appreciated the idea that, you know, Zebes is an entire planet, so, of course, it's not like you explored the entire planet the first time around. I like how Super Metroid shows that the areas in the original Metroid were just small bits of the bigger picture.
Props for representing the Randomizers, they are now my favorite way to play the game :)
If you want a new way to play this, you should try a randomly generated bingo card. The objective isn't to complete the game, but to obviously complete a Bingo of random objectives. Definitely makes you think about how you have to play the game differently!
Welcome to episode 27 of asking Jirard to complete Xenoblade Chronicles.

What you didn't really mention about Sam is that when you finally got the ending that showed her in the bikini, that was actually the first time most people ever even knew she was a girl. That was a mind blowing moment and gaming history. By that point people were very invested in the game and story, to find out you were playing as a badass chick was really cool.
I'm about to complete my first 100% run of Super Metroid. It's my favorite game of all time and I love hearing people gush about it to this day. It's such a great game!

I always love watching you talk about this game or play it
Its nice watching these videos months later
Just finished this game for the first time like an hour ago! It was so good! 9.5/10
The missing .5 is because the wall jump and space jump mechanics were way too hard to use and cause me a lot of pain.
Saying that the space jump is hard to use is understandable; but the wall jump is _supposed_ to be an advanced technique - it's hard by design, and it's in no way needed to complete the game, except if you save at one certain save point. But even then you only need one wall jump.
Space jump was ez af but the wall jump...
I would give it a 9.5 becouse of the wall jump and bcz the map doesnt show you if you have or havent collected an item.
Finally!
This is probaly the best new game plus and one of your best episodes.

The last metroid is in captivity....
My one nitpick for this game is the map, specifically when it comes to displaying both non-collected and collected items a simple square dot isn't enough
I just started playing this again on the switch. I used to play it all the time when I was a kid, but like most games I never actually beat them as a kid.

I love Super Metroid, but I still prefer Metroid Fusion. Personal preferences!
They're both great games though Super Metroid did it first and in a lot of ways did it better. I loved the story to Fusion a lot better. I think if they ever did a movie, that would be the most interesting.
@@shadowproductions969 Metroid Fusion controls better than Super, firing missiles in SM is annoying (having to press select to change weapons...) and grabbing ledges is a most. Again, only my opinion.
@slimDaTa grabbing ledges is indeed a most

@@gu3z185 The story from Metroid Fusion is a lot better, I feel like. And I just love the horror aspect of Fusion. Zero Mission is great, for sure.
I just finished this game for the first time yesterday and coming from the perspective of someone who doesn't play this style of game very often, I can't say it really made as huge of an impression on me. I don't think it was bad by any means. I just felt like there are some clunky aspects to the jumping that I just couldn't ever get used to. That, the even more clunky grappling, and the cryptic world design of how crucial traversal points were hidden made it more frustrating to finish than satisfying to the end. I just didn't find it that appealing to feel the need to compulsively fire all weapon types at every type of surface for basic progression. The look of the game was great and it definitely had some great moments but I can't put this anywhere near the greatest games of all time. But hey, like they say, opinions are like assholes, everyone's got one and not everyone waxes their asshole.
Couldn't agree more. I actually played this very very late, and I could still see the whole beauty in it. Purely amazing. Easily one of the best experiences in gaming, like, ever. No matter if someone has played this young or not. It simply doesn't matter. Its just TOO good. Atmosphere in this game is topnotch only diablo 1 and this game from that era, truly knew what they were doing, about making an insanely memorable eerie, alien atmosphere. Can't be rivalled by modern games, in that regard.
Fun fact : Once again you included your donkey kong music in there. haha. I get it, but super metroid is still so amazing that it's worth using the SM soundtrack for the whole video imo.
Not insulting you Jirard, but why are all channels being sponsored by Raid Shadow Legends?

Played and loved both "Super Metroid" and "Castlevania: Symphony of the Night" since way back when they were released in the 90's. Have played both many times since then. Never could decide on which game I like better. Both are perfect games. Another game that I love almost as much as those two is "Zelda III: A Link to the Past". Anyways, it warms my heart to see that people like you, that I'm assuming are too young to have played these games when they came out, have discovered and enjoy them just as much as my generation.
