Sorry for all of the questions, but I am a 32-year-old female that is just trying to learn & figure it out as she goes! Thanks 4 your help.
Staci McVay It’s always safer to remove the radiator cap when working on the cooling system, as far as the hoses go, I recommend removing them and replacing, they only cost 8 to ten dollars a piece. To remove them, loosen the hose clamp with a flat screwdriver, then insert the screwdriver under the hose and hose clamp to lose it up for removal. As far as the weird zip tie, without seeing a pic I assume it’s function is to secure some type of wiring harness, you can usually pop those out of the bracket with a flat screwdriver or work around it. Good luck!
Hi, I have an 1.4 aerodeck year 2000, I have changed termostat, coolant not leaking...I get the temperature variations up to the upper quarter of the dash indicator. What about the temperature sensor?
You probably have an air bubble in the water jacket, making it low on coolant, try burping the system by letting air out at the thermostat hose. Then add more coolant.
Luis Perez pull the hose without draining, you’ll loose some coolant, but not too much. Refill when you’re done, drive it around check the coolant level again and add if necessary.
I had my 2004 Honda Civic for about a month now and yesterday it suddenly overheated, the brakes got tight and all. Took about 30 minutes before I could start it again but even then it got overheated in a matter of minutes. Have been failing to diagnose the problem. Can’t find any leaks, but the hoses look corroded. I replaced the thermostat, not sure if that was the problem I’ve yet to give it a test run for fear it’ll break down again. Also, I do not use coolant or anti-freeze, just water. And I’m worried it may have gotten to the engine.
I changed the Thermostat Just Yesterday, But I didn't thoroughly Clean the Housing. Seems to Be Working though. Shall I go back and Clean the housing and do it over?
I would say that as long as it’s not leaking, and since it’s already installed, leave it alone. If it was going to break from a dirty mating surface, it usually happens during installation.
Had a strange thing happen to my 99 Civic today. Started smoking while driving. Overheated next. Pulled over and noticed I lost all my coolant. Now to find where it leaked from. Maybe too much pressure built up and a hose split. Replacing thermostat (Genuine Honda) this week as a precaution
Just had my 2000 Honda make a noise pulled over and saw a leak of antifreeze on right side what do you think it is ? Engine wouldn’t start!!! Thank you
Water pump: Well I *have* seen one that went bad. Also seen a brand new aftermarket pump that wouldn't even turn. And ANOTHER one that had interference with the block once it was bolted up. Moral of the story: if you suspect a water pump, buy it in advance and CHECK the part! Also another thing old 'D' engine Hondas are vulnerable to is corrosion of the crossover pipe (underneath the intake manifold). Mine corroded all the way through! That was the source of the leak.
I did water pump thermostat timing belt temp sending unit also new radiator no leak still getting too warm. Fan also works. What’s next head gasket didn’t run it hot though
i was driving today and noticed my temperature of the car was at max. i pulled over and realized my radiator coolant tank was bubbling, sizzling and steaming out. i turned the car off and added more antifreeze. Even then after i began to drive again about 15 seconds later it began to bubble again. i also beleive that the radiator fan hadnt been spinning. can u tell me what to check please. 2000 honda civic se. thank you
I had a 2001 Honda Civic that unfortunately had this issue. I had to get rid of it and buy a more expensive car with a loan, but I really wish I could've kept that car. I loved it but no mechanic I took it to could fix the overheating. We never tried putting a new thermostat on it.
2003 Honda Accord 2.4 litre one morning it was cold let it warm up for 22 minutes and then the gauge went to hot and coolant fan did not turn on, just put in new thermostat housing and new thermostat. Very little smoke from the radiator and the hose i squeezed it no circulation. Do you think it needs 2 new hoses one on top and a bottom hose, radiator coolant sensor,it was leaking before when i drove it but my opinion its either the radiator leaks or the water pump leaks I'm not sure what do you think it is the problem?
You got to know first what thermostat does and then your comment would make more sense. Without thermostat your cooling fan will not work when your engine is getting hot.
@@vicn4059 well before you come in acting like he doesnt know shit. Maybe watch what hes talking about first. His comment is reffering to the guy calling the switch the temperature control sensor. Maybe you have to learn to put pieces of the puzzle together before you try to solve it, then it would make more sense.
i ave a 1997 honda civic . my ac compressor doesn't work ,hasn't been working for years actually.. the radiator also doesn't work to replace the fuse will that get my radiator going ?(my first car had for 3 months now making a lot of repairs, also it over heated yesterday and it burst all under the hood)
chelonda ler probably a fuse will not solve any problems. You will need to find out where the coolant leak is at, then make the repair before it overheats again.
Justin Andries Start by finding a water leak, after running the motor to operating temperature, shut it off, look under the car for water dripping from somewhere.
01 honda accord lx 2 weeks ago I did the same thing replaced my thermastat my overheating stopped, then the other day I noticed a dead grass spot lol in my mom's yard were I would park so from how it looks its dripping on the driver's side on the backside of pulleys, my stepfather told me the water pump and timing belts were replaced at 100,000 miles and im at 140,000 miles so what's frustrating is when I drive for 10 mins or so my temp gauge slowly starts going up. I saw there was low coolent in overflow tank so filled to the line but not over flow and did the same to my radiator. When filling my radiator I can hear leaking on the ground with a decent drip. Been told I don't have a blown head gasket cus no smoke, also good spark, no fluid in were my spark plugs go,. So yea im stumped. Lol
Matt Pritchard yep they come on, yesterday I tried the heat and it was blowing cold then today the heat worked but I did notice leaking towards the druvers side I'd say a foot or so in front of the firewall looks like my waterpump is leaking ughhhh
Pretty sure the water pump is internal, they usually dont leak. Maybe theres a hose around there thats leaking somewhere. Theres external hoses all over those moters.
@@MattPritchard hey man I had the same thing happen and I would about garentee it's the water pump that is the only thing the on the driver's side. And they are very hard to change you have to take the timeing belt off. Good luck it's a real job
Tim Clarke Check for small oil bubbles in the water. Let it run for a while, then after it cools off, remove the radiator cap and check for any oily residue in the water. If there is, then it’s the head gasket. Also check that the fan comes on at operating temperature.
I had new radiator. I got a 99 Honda Civic ex. Can’t find leak anywhere. N coolant disappears in radiator and overflow in a few days. Thermostat I’m wondering but the Guy tht put in the new radiator did not bleed it. So air is hella trapped every time I take cap off when cool. Temp guage will get above half n back down when driving. Is it the thermostat but would tht explain coolant loss n it’s not a head I have had 2 cars tht had bad heads n this is different
Wicked Witch check the condition of the coolant in the radiator, if it’s leaking out through the head you may have slime or gunk around the radiator cap, or in the water itself. See if you can get a compression test, check for a bad head gasket. You must be loosing coolant somewhere.
Matt Pritchard but it started leaking again on front drivers said outside. I was told tonight it is the water pump. Damn I feared tht. I have to drive it tho n watch coolant but no check engine light on but maybe it does not have to be
I have a 2000 Honda civic ex v-tec water keep going to overflow and not returning replaced hoses top and bottom and thermostat plugs and wires had heat before I changed everything now my heater doesn't work flushed motor and heater core what am u missing Please Help
I’m assuming it’s over heating, drive the car around to operating temp, bring it home, park it somewhere where you can see water dripping on the ground. Wait patiently and watch for any leaks. If you don’t see any, check that your electric fans are turning on. If those check out ok, look at the radiator cap for oil in the water, you may have a blown head gasket, these cars are notorious for that.
I changed all my hoses, thermostat, head gasket and radiator. Still over boiling. I noticed my thermostat was closed. 2000 Honda civic lx sedan. Can you help?
Youre probably loosing water somewhere, check the radiator cap and dipstick for any oily residue. Water may be escaping under the head gasket. Even though you replaced it, the cylinders may be warped. Check out this video. czcams.com/video/1OEBRxE8TQ0/video.html The thermostat starts off closed, then opens when the coolant hits a certain temperature.
Hi I change the thermostat and drain all the coolant and refill with new one my car does not overheat at all when driving normal and I drive it every day about 80 miles to work and back but when I turn on the ac the car does overheat when I’m on idle either at stop light or just on idk understand why it keep overheating do you have any idea ?? I can drive anywhere as long as I don’t turn on the ac ☹️👎
Its your radiator most likely I couldn't figure out where my coolant was going and I would also take 80 mile trips too I would overheat too mostly at idle.
My son's 2000 crv is overheating. Radiator is fine, thermostat replaced, new cap put on the radiator. Fan wont come on unless the AC is on. It is not overheating to boiling point any more but its running too hot still. Replaced the fan relay today and still too hot. What are your thoughts?
Bunny Girl There is a temperature control sensor that tells the fan to come on when the coolant temperature goes above a certain point. It screws into the engine somewhere, follow the wire from the fan back to the motor. Those little sensors go out sometimes and can easily be replaced.
Mines over heated yesterday not sure y and i just put in new radiator and thermostat in it it got so badd my radiator cap got burnt can u tell me wats wrong with it I got civic 03
crappie masta shut off the motor, let it cool down and check that the radiator is full. If not, fill it up and check for overheating. If it’s full, you may have a thermostat issue, obstructing water flow, or a water pump issue not circulating water.
@@MattPritchard it came on .is weir only some time happen get hot I did the test for emission in the cooling system and is negative.the only thing can I tink is the catalytic converter is get in to hot.
My honda keeps over heating .the heat Is gone but then the temp will drop down and the heat will kick back on . But I'm loosing alot of coolant . It was hissing at the thermostat where the hose goes
The thermostat housing does not have a gasket when it is OEM The thermostat itself will have a ring gasket that goes on at that slip onto the lips That's all
My 1999 civic overheats in the summertime after the car has been warmed up, and then sits stationary at idle with the A/C on. After that initial warm up, I can witness the radiator fan start to spin and then continue spinning. So that tells me that the cooling fan circuit (relay & fan switch) is working. I don't yet know the condition of the thermostat. But even with the fan running, the temperature steadily creeps up to hot. But, If I raise the engine speed to 2200 or greater, the temp quickly goes back down to normal. So given all that, I'm thinking that because the over-temp problem can be overcome when the engine/water pump runs faster, it would seem logical to me that either the pump is defective, or that there is an obstruction to the flow of coolant... or both. Am I on the right track?
Yes you are, before you start taking things apart however; make certain that the cooling system is full. If there’s a leak somewhere, there won’t be enough coolant to cool the engine at idle.
Thank you @@MattPritchard. Yes it is full, and no leaks. I really appreciate you breaking it down for us, and for your personal reply! Just got through researching when I last changed the pump. It was during my last timing belt change. Might as well start this next round of troubleshooting by replacing the pump, because it's clear that I'm due for another timing-belt change anyway... haha
The CTS simply tells the temperature guage what to do so the operator knows if the car is overheating. A TCS is use to turn on or of another component such as the electric fans .
Matt Pritchard there are 3 sensors. The one between the coolant temp sensor and between the fan switch. Its in the middle of those 2. That's the one that controls the gauge
Matt Pritchard middle one controls the gauge inside your car to tell you when the engine is hot or cold. The one directly under the distributor tells your fans when to kick on. And the one in your video is the fan switch. Thanks for the video I went and did some more research
My 2000 civic start to overheats to the max. even after new radiator and thermostat - the coolant vanish after 1 hour and start to overheating to the max again. the water pump can do this problems?
ESTC I knew it!!! I’m not a certified mechanic but I been through enough to how to fix my car.... I had the same problems with my 2000 civic lx thank God I have a family member who owns a shop so I’m able do my own thing and ask for help whatever I get stuck. I did everything I was supposed to do in a overheating case and and after taking all the steps I was left with the most dreaded one... new head gasket. Here’s the catch though, the same issues reoccurred months later and since I knew the car and what kind of work I’ve put in it, a quick look/test shows it was the head gasket again. My mechanic relative? He got lazy and didn’t inspect the cylinders head for wraps and that was my main issue. So on the second around replacing it we had to resurface it , in fact my car is in the shop as we speak, I’m waiting for Monday so we can go resurface it and put it back together. I can only imagine how much money a crooked mechanic would make off an average person that doesn’t know much about cars just to get to the bottom of this issue.
Angelo Villamil well this motor has some serious issues, it may or may not do you any good to replace the head gasket, check out this video; czcams.com/video/1OEBRxE8TQ0/video.html
My 05 honda civic's radiator blew in the middle of a long trip. Coolant had splattered all over the passenger side of the car from the top of the radiator blowing. I added stop leak to the car to try to hold the coolant in just long enough so I could get it back home. Since I have replaced the radiator but my car has a reoccurring overheating issue. Specifically when it sits in idol with the A/C running, when going up big hills, when driving often in a hot day (I live in Phoenix AZ). Do you think the stop leak is clogging my coolant from circulating properly?
If all your components seem to be working properly, you may consider a head gasket issue. Look for oil dropplets at the radiator cap, or a tannish filmy color on the dipstick. Sometimes after setting a while water dropplets will occur at the end of the dipstick. I really dont think Stopleak will plug or restrict water circulation.
i have a 2000 Honda Civic Coupe, no problems until yesterday, i started the car and the temperature gauge immediately went to the Hot position, what can it be wrong with my car? thanks.
Matt Pritchard no, I check immediately after, and the radiator and coolant reservoir were full. The gauge went to hot as soon as I started the car, and I hadn’t started the cars for hours, so it was cool, any other diagnosis? Thanks
You may have a blockage, try replacing the thermostat, also, check for oil in the coolant when you remove the radiator cap, if there’s oil present, that’s very bad.
I got a leak in my water pump on the bottom of the 2000 hondo civic and it leaks out all my anti freeze n the motor overheats instantly. How much does that cost to fix??
My 2000 Civic started overheating only with A/c on when idling after I replaced a not functioning properly resistor. If I leave the a/c off, its fine. Why does overheating only happen when engine is idling at stop light with a/c on?
@@MattPritchard So I did a few checks. First I checked the reservoir for coolant. It was at max level. Then I checked the rad. I couldn't see any coolant at all! Not to mention my car takes blue coolant and someone put green in it. Anyway, seemed pretty dry. Not completely but it needed at least a liter of coolant. I could not see any leaks. Anyway, I started the car, went for a drive and it was back to normal. I just wonder where all the coolant went? It has been 5 years since I last checked as I had a new rad put in. Will it burn off after 5 years and what is the point of filling the reservoir if it doesn't end up in the radiator?
@@mysteryjesus the problem with these cars is that they will loose coolant into the cylinders and you will never see a leak. The problem will only get worse over time, I posted a video about the issue and how it happens, a while back. As far as the reservoir goes, it’s only an overflow and doesn’t really help with adding coolant.
@@MattPritchard So I added coolant so its good there. Now, I see there are two fans. The one on the radiator is not spinning. The other one on the drivers side is. Does that indicate a problem?
Dexter Epperson how many miles on the car? If it ever overheated, these cars will loose water at the head gasket. You never see the leak, take a look at the water in the radiator, there may be oil in the coolant.
@@MattPritchard I pulled the spark plugs and and it was wet what does this mean I thought it was a head gasket but my oil ain't milky .....and it has 209000 miles on it but a new motor and trans was put in
Dexter Epperson water in the combustion chamber (wet spark plugs) means that there is a water leak at the head gasket, your water is going right out the tail pipe, and your motor over heats.
Buddy at work has been filling his every day when he comes to work . Definitely will talk him about this.

Cooling fan? I know it leads to coolant overheating, but still!
The coolant hose that runs under the distributor. To replace, do you need to drain all the radiator fluid completely?
Luis Perez pull the hose without draining, you’ll loose some coolant, but not too much. Refill when you’re done, drive it around check the coolant level again and add if necessary.
Coolant fans are NOT coming On as they should another possible scenario why a car could be overheating.
Mario S. that sensor he poked at is probably the culprit, look up youtube vids about the coolant temperature sensor..
Hell yeah saved me 400$!
Sweet info. Thank you!
Andrew Rodriguez did it solve the problem?
Why do you just use water?
Hahaha I seen that beer on the left hand side
I changed the Thermostat Just Yesterday, But I didn't thoroughly Clean the Housing. Seems to Be Working though. Shall I go back and Clean the housing and do it over?
I would say that as long as it’s not leaking, and since it’s already installed, leave it alone. If it was going to break from a dirty mating surface, it usually happens during installation.
you did not show position of thermostat in housing the 2 nubs on rubber seal
I have a Honda civic and the engine oil air going into the radiator and no coolant mixing with the oil
Had a strange thing happen to my 99

Just had my 2000 Honda make a noise pulled over and saw a leak of antifreeze on right side what do you think it is ? Engine wouldn’t start!!! Thank you
A few pics and more info and then I may be able to help you.
I just got 2005 Honda Civic lx just replace thermostat, timing belt, water pump, and radiator also head gasket but still overheating any help??!!

Not only 2 things. Temperature sensor or temperature relays .And on top of that fan doesn't activate. So is not only 2 things like you said .
that’s what I’m thinking for my 2004 Honda Civic EX. The radiator has already been replaced, I’m going after the thermostat next. $15 part at most.
Are your fans kicking on
How did it go? I have a 2004 Honda Civic EX as well. I'm going to be replacing both the thermostat and fan switch and see what happens.
i was driving today and noticed my temperature of the car was at max. i pulled over and realized my radiator coolant tank was bubbling, sizzling and steaming out. i turned the car off and added more antifreeze.

Wow.. I had one with the same problem
Replace the fan switch located near the thermostat
Thank you for your help I'll do that glad i saw your videos !!!
2:18, That is a radiator cooling fan switch not a temperature sensor.
Lool riight
You got to know first what thermostat does and then your comment would make more sense. Without thermostat your cooling fan will not work when your engine is getting hot.
@@vicn4059 well before you come in acting like he doesnt know shit. Maybe watch what hes talking about first. His comment is reffering to the guy calling the switch the temperature control sensor. Maybe you have to learn to put pieces of the puzzle together before you try to solve it, then it would make more sense.
That’s why You use distilled water. But obviously coolant is best. It has a higher boiling point than water.
That’s actually the radiator fan switch on the thermostat housing. The temperature sensor is another part located elsewhere.
Where?
i ave a 1997 honda civic . my ac compressor doesn't work ,hasn't been working for years actually.. the radiator also doesn't work to replace the fuse will that get my radiator going ?(my first car had for 3 months now making a lot of repairs, also it over heated yesterday and it burst all under the hood)
chelonda ler probably a fuse will not solve any problems. You will need to find out where the coolant leak is at, then make the repair before it overheats again.
@@MattPritchard thank you i found it and it is being fixed.
Hey man my 2003 Honda is doing the same thing no leaks over heating.
So it could possibly be the thermostat?
Probably a leaking head gasket, your coolant is probably going out the tail pipe after combusting with the fuel mixture.
What could cause blockage.
Helo my car does the same thing it overheating up until the red zone of the heating gauge where do i start i woul really appreciate the help
Justin Andries Start by finding a water leak, after running the motor to operating temperature, shut it off, look under the car for water dripping from somewhere.
Thank you very much bro, God bless you
You're welcome. God bless you too.
Lol
Maybe the radiator finns are plugged. Also make certain the electric fans come on at operating temperatures.
I like the way he says silacun
Matt Pritchard radiator hose clamp is corrosion all over it n antifreeze coming out of hose. Just found out tonight. Taking it to someone tomorrow
Matt Pritchard but it started leaking again on front drivers said outside. I was told tonight it is the water pump. Damn I feared tht. I have to drive it tho n watch coolant but no check engine light on but maybe it does not have to be
Wicked Witch poor the water to it, if it over heats it will blow a head gasket.
Matt Pritchard you are right if u let it redline u can. But it has not been overheating. It’s weird
I have a 2000 Honda civic ex v-tec water keep going to overflow and not returning replaced hoses top and bottom and thermostat plugs and wires had heat before I changed everything now my heater doesn't work flushed motor and heater core what am u missing
Please Help
I’m assuming it’s over heating, drive the car around to operating temp, bring it home, park it somewhere where you can see water dripping on the ground. Wait patiently and watch for any leaks. If you don’t see any, check that your electric fans are turning on. If those check out ok, look at the radiator cap for oil in the water, you may have a blown head gasket, these cars are notorious for that.
What did your problem end up being @Jacob Hoffman
I changed all my hoses, thermostat, head gasket and radiator. Still over boiling. I noticed my thermostat was closed. 2000 Honda civic lx sedan. Can you help?
Fan work and no over heating just boiling in my resovoir
Youre probably loosing water somewhere, check the radiator cap and dipstick for any oily residue. Water may be escaping under the head gasket. Even though you replaced it, the cylinders may be warped. Check out this video.
czcams.com/video/1OEBRxE8TQ0/video.html
The thermostat starts off closed, then opens when the coolant hits a certain temperature.
Matt Pritchard good answer
Hi I change the thermostat and drain all the coolant and refill with new one my car does not overheat at all when driving normal and I drive it every day about 80 miles to work and back but when I turn on the ac the car does overheat when I’m on idle either at stop light or just on idk understand why it keep overheating do you have any idea ?? I can drive anywhere as long as I don’t turn on the ac ☹️👎
Its your radiator most likely I couldn't figure out where my coolant was going and I would also take 80 mile trips too I would overheat too mostly at idle.
It was actually my water pump failing but it can be different parts starting to fail check all your cooling system components.
The pump should never fail because it’s replaced every 90k with the timing belt.
My didnt came with that black plastic around the thermasic
My son's 2000 crv is overheating. Radiator is fine, thermostat replaced, new cap put on the radiator. Fan wont come on unless the AC is on. It is not overheating to boiling point any more but its running too hot still. Replaced the fan relay today and still too hot. What are your thoughts?
Bunny Girl check to see if it's looking coolant, if not there is an obstruction in the water circulation somewhere.
No leak. Would it be either a wire is broken to the fan or the fins in the water pump ?
Bunny Girl Does the fan click on at operating temp when idling?
Matt Pritchard only if the A.C. is on
Bunny Girl There is a temperature control sensor that tells the fan to come on when the coolant temperature goes above a certain point. It screws into the engine somewhere, follow the wire from the fan back to the motor. Those little sensors go out sometimes and can easily be replaced.
I just got water pump leaks.. Dude it happens.. Must be included
You're wrong when your car overheats it CAN'T be only two things!

crappie masta well I need more information, does the fan come on? Did you fill the coolant system completely? Did it have a leak Pryor?
I dont see no leak under the car at all the fans comes on but not right away the hose all looks good no sign of leaks
crappie masta shut off the motor, let it cool down and check that the radiator is full. If not, fill it up and check for overheating. If it’s full, you may have a thermostat issue, obstructing water flow, or a water pump issue not circulating water.

My honda keeps over heating .the heat Is gone but then the temp will drop down and the heat will kick back on . But I'm loosing alot of coolant . It was hissing at the thermostat where the hose goes
Did you figure out what was wrong with it?
The thermostat housing does not have a gasket when it is OEM The thermostat itself will have a ring gasket that goes on at that slip onto the lips That's all
How do u know if ur thermastat is working??
Typically if the thermostat is stuck open, the motor fails to reach operating temperature, stuck shut, it overheats very quickly.
No My brothers car had the head machined, just to eliminate all other factors

Is the temp control sensor same as coolant temp sensor? What are they're functions
That's the one that controls the gauge
smoke dogg Not sure what the middle one does, maybe controls the cabin temperature, not sure.
Matt Pritchard middle one controls the gauge inside your car to tell you when the engine is hot or cold. The one directly under the distributor tells your fans when to kick on. And the one in your video is the fan switch. Thanks for the video I went and did some more research
Thanks Smokedog, but what’s the difference between the fan switch and the one that tells the fans to kick on, isn’t that the same?
My 2000 civic start to overheats to the max.
even after new radiator and thermostat - the coolant vanish after 1 hour and start to overheating to the max again.
the water pump can do this problems?
No, the pump simply circulates water, sounds like you have a water leak somewhere.

Good job boss
