  • After a gorgeous but rolly anchorage at the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, it's time for us to start cruising up the Hudson River! It's as scenic and nostalgic as any while Jen and Carol recount their experiences living in NY back in the day. The cruise is a wonderful one filled with family and impressive views. We are finally around mountains for the first time on Pivot!
    Thanks for watching!
    Cheers from the Loop,
    Jennifer and Elliot

    ABOUT US
    Hi! We are high school sweethearts from Atlanta, Georgia who decided to take a year off to travel around the world. Together we decided to create vlogs for our journey as a fun way to remember it. On September 15, 2019, we left Atlanta with 3 bags, 2 one-way tickets, and 1 goal of traveling for a whole year. Little did we know, 6 months later we would find ourselves in a nationwide lockdown in India. After spending 5 months in India, we came back to the United States and decided to purchase a 34’ Trawler, dive headfirst into boat life, and kick-off America’s Great Loop.
    The good, the bad, the ugly - and most importantly, the real and real funny. We’re not here to tell you “how it’s done.”, just how we’ve done it. And that whatever it is that’s calling you - the way you’ll do it is much more attainable than it may seem.
    Thank you for following us along our journey!

    I grew up on the Hudson, in NJ, opposite 135th St. in Manhattan. My Dad owned several boats (singly & in business partnership) all anchored in front of our home. When the original "TAPPAN ZEE" bridge was being built, Dad and Capt. Buck's 52' "BOBBY" was chartered to carry the shift change workers to and from the Caissons that were the concrete supports for the bridgework. As a Youngster in the 1940's through 1960's we made many trips to Dad's birthplace, Haverstraw, NY, to visit his family. Dad & Capt Buck's fleet were also in Club Charter for Around Manhattan Island Cruises and Deep Sea fishing trips. My Younger Brother Al and I grew up working on fleet in various capacities suitable to preteens and later teenagers. I love the Hudson River and was lucky enough for my last year in the USCG to be stationed on a Buoy Tender that worked the Hudson Aids to navigation up to Kingston, NY.
    Thanks for the Memories. Beached in the Valley of the Sun!

    I live in New Hamburg, between Beacon and Poughkeepsie. I commute into the city on Metro North. I'm glad you focused on the natural beauty, not only right out of the city, but still IN the city itself!!! Fun Fact: Yonkers is the second hilliest city in the nation (over 100,000) after San Francisco. It has been referred to as San Francisco on the Hudson.

    That Bear Mountain anchorage looks challenging. Very shallow near shore then an abrupt and steep drop off. A very narrow area of reasonable depth to anchor in.
    I would have a hard time sleeping on the hook there unless it's actually a wider area than it looks in Navionics.

    • @SchoandJo

    There are a lot of great towns and places to stop and see along the Hudson River. There used to be a tested spring coming out of the Palasades, many very large boulders, be very careful approaching that area. Watch your charts for water hazards. I landed on top of a huge bolder in at least 10 feet of water off Stony Point. There are many beaches along the river, Bear Mountain areas are very deep. I’ve measured depths as deep as two hundred feet. Clinton’s Ditch is amazing. Don’t forget to stop at West Point.

    Rumor is NYC is visible from Bear mountain. Distance to the horizon being 1.225 x square root of the observation height in feet combined with earths alleged curvature rate of 8” x the # of miles squared, makes it flat out amazing!

      Y’all seem pretty wonderful and thanks for the reply. But Im pretty sure it was not too far to see nyc had the weather been clear as i used to live a mile away from there. However, my only nautical claim to fame was colliding with and subsequently sinking a varsity crew boat as the sun was setting in our coxswain’s eyes (when I was rowing for west point as a green pea), so yall are doing great. There were no injuries and somehow our boat survived undamaged, so all was well. Hope yall are doing excellent and that your adventure is legendary. Never forget, they call it sea level for a good reason :-). God bless, and yall got my sub.

    Remember, the geological history of this region is that NY was the lower boundary of the last ice age! Which is why you see the landscape features you’ve identified. That’s why the Bronx is so hilly, and the Palisades and Bear Mountain are as you’ve discovered them

  • @Tnapvrvideo

    Great share!!! What an amazing on-the-water visit to NYC. Might I ask how you knew where you could drop the anchor in that active waterway? Thanks!

    • @SchoandJo
      @SchoandJo  Před 2 měsíci

      We used our navigation apps to determine where was not allowed and chose from there. i.e. not in a channel, or a cable / security zone, etc. I believe active captain had an anchorage symbol there too, so that helped 😁

    Why was the original Tappan Zee Bridge built there? Basically, then the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey was formed, in order to protect it's bridges and tunnels from other people coming into their area and building bridges and tunnels and forcing the Port Authority to lose money, they were given exclusive rights to build bridges and tunnels for automobiles to New Jersey and the Hudson River crossings that were within 50 miles of the Statue of Liberty. The original Tappan Bridge was built by the NYS Thruway Authority at a point that was about 200 feet north of that boundary. So the new bridge was built north of the old bridge.

    you think you could tie up a 20' powerboat to that Bear Mountain dock for 2 hours to hike a trail? thinking about checking it out this summer - apparently there's a zoo!

    • @SchoandJo
      @SchoandJo  Před 3 měsíci

      hmm good question! If you time the tides, I'm sure it could be done you just have to be very particular about how you tie up your boat. It wasn't that nice of a dock, so you may want to check it out ahead of time via car to see if its what you expect! The zoo was closed when we were visiting but we wanted to see it, seemed pretty neat!
