COMMUNICATION put to the test with HIGH WINDS while RAFTING in HUGE LOCKS on the Trent-Severn

- Pivot is getting kicked out of Campbellford, Ontario (just kidding, but we do need to move) and although we have another day of high winds, we are living the canal life! Under 30 knots and no large bodies of water, we are good to go.
This, of course, makes our cruise to Hastings a bit more stressful but fortunately, we get to meet two new Loopers, Beth and Mike on their Ranger Tug, "Amy Marie" and Gary and Mary on their Carver, "Volare".
Thanks for watching!
Cheers from the Loop,
Jennifer and Elliot

ABOUT US
Hi! We are high school sweethearts from Atlanta, Georgia who decided to take a year off to travel around the world. Together we decided to create vlogs for our journey as a fun way to remember it. On September 15, 2019, we left Atlanta with 3 bags, 2 one-way tickets, and 1 goal of traveling for a whole year. Little did we know, 6 months later we would find ourselves in a nationwide lockdown in India. After spending 5 months in India, we came back to the United States and decided to purchase a 34’ Trawler, dive headfirst into boat life, and kick-off America’s Great Loop.
The good, the bad, the ugly - and most importantly, the real and real funny. We’re not here to tell you “how it’s done.”, just how we’ve done it. And that whatever it is that’s calling you - the way you’ll do it is much more attainable than it may seem.
Thank you for following us along our journey!

I LIVE 4 MILES SOUTH OF GORE'S LANDING , ONT. ... MY PARENTS HAD A 90 HP POWER BOAT .... WHEN I WAS ABOUT 10 ... MY PARENTS AND MY YOUNGER BROTHER AND SISTER WENT THROUGH THE PETERBOROUGH LIFT LOCK ... YOUR VIDEO BROUGHT BACK WONDERFUL MEMORIES OF MY WONDERFUL PARENTS ! .... THANK YOU FOR SHOWING THIS BEAUTIFUL PART OF THE WORLD !
That little trawler Amy Marie is gorgeous.
That double lock was SO cool!

Jen needs to have her own cookbook for sale. 😊
I agree. I was just thinking the same. How about a You tube spin off of her cooking on board , lesson format?
@@richardbender7384 that would be awesome!
I agree. We could make some wonderful meals using Jen's recipes. We are both "foodies".
Jen, you really should put together a cookbook called "Healthy Trawler Eating". The stuff I've seen you make looks healthy. And Elliott always glows about how tasty your food is. Much better than "grab n go" snacks full of fats and preservatives.
Thanks Tim! We are planning something like that in the future, I'm one lucky man!
Add to the practice of locking. Glad all went well and at least you had a wall to hook to. Enjoy
I giggled when Ollie circled twice on the first lock. Like she was ready to be top supervisor for the day. And then she did it every time. So cute! That sandwich looked SO GOOD! Jenn is looking so confident as each video goes by. And one last thing, that Amy Marie is one cute tug! I love it!
You two nailed these locks. What an awesome video. Stay safe, and enjoy.
Great episode. Locking through like pros! So much fun following the three of you!
Thank's so much Vern!
Wow... you are an inspiration. I've watched you go from "what the h@@@ are we doing" to "we got this". I really appreciate your documentation.
If we ever make in as far as you, I hope we find folks like you
Very kind, Ed! You will one day!
I fell off the boat recently, but seeing you again.....amazing watching the teamwork.
Thanks Mike!
You guys are turning into real pros lol. The wind can make a trip pretty interesting at times. Last boat had bow and stern thrusters and twins which made it less hairy. But you guys are getting real good at dealing with it. Jen never has to worry about getting overweight the way she flies around handing the lines lol. A perfect boat person. But your ok too Elliot lol. When I see Jenn in action, It reminds me of a saying I heard years ago. " Good woman work hard " . lol.
Another great video guys, it’s a cold and snowy night here in Peterborough and watching you guys coming up the Trent Severn gives us that warm feeling we miss so much,we are so looking forward to 2023 season on the Trent Severn, can’t wait to watch you guys go through the Peterborough liftlock…
I think the cute ranger tug got the better end of the deal while rafting ... I hope they supplied some good docktails!
Just great company, which is all we could ask for!
All I have to say about that sandwich is …UMM! 😋 You all make going through all those locks look effortless. I’m sure it isn’t but you have nailed it down! Great video…stay safe!
I broke a prop at Crowe Bay, got too close to the rocks. Hastings is one of my favorites to stay at. Great videos!
Ahh shoot... that's never fun! At least its a story now.
Y. E. A. H. ‼️ 🎉 ✨ 🌊 💨 🛥🌞✨ Another great day locking. 😊 it is good to see Jen build skill and confidence. To the point of even making sure the rafting boat has their line squarely inside the chock before cleaning. Concern for fellow loopers. Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiice.
Looks like another successful day on The Great Loop. Always looking forward to your next vlog.
Great job on this series of locks. I love the Ranger Tug that was your lock mate.
Seriously! Its a cool boat and Mike and Beth are wonderful humans 😁
7:28 I want the NEBO app/ hardware. Actually the first ad in 10,000 I’ve seen that’s relevant. 😊
I really love your vids. Any chance for a second loop? Or Bahamas in the future?
Repairing my port engine now. Eating me alive to watch your videos.
Come back to Beaufort NC, will buy you a beer! 🙂
Those tall locks are like cathedrals.
hah they are kind of like cathedrals! We may attempt a Loop v2 at some point! Good luck getting your Port Engine up to speed!
Great video. Locking skills are great, assisting other boats, sundowners. 👍👍👍
❤️
YOU NEED TO WRITE A COOKBOOK! I WOULD REALLY LOVE THE RECIPE FOR THE CURRY CHICKPEA SANDWICH. PLEASE
Absolutely! We are working on that!! Thank you Beth!
We stayed in Hastings on the wall and partied with the people that lived next to the lock. I knew you guys would enjoy the Trent.
Bingewatching your great loop series as the snow comes down. Planning to retrace parts in our van. Wonder how Great Loop Vanlife will be?
I think it would be awesome as well!
15:12 i can see myself putting my boat in the water lol
haha wild!
You didn’t have strong current coming from dam at lock 14… can hit you broad side some hard before getting the protection of the lock channel.
We saw our boats/docks at lock 15. Hope people waved to you… we’re a friendly bunch at Cole’s Point Resort.
Everyone is friendly for sure! There definitely is some strong current at those locks, you have to be very aware and ready to keep your boat steady.
oh I thought that was a
put COUUMICATION SKILLS TO THE TEST WITH A TRIP AROUND THE GREAT LOOP !!!!! lol hahahahahahahahaha
awesome another vid... unpausing!!
Will you folks be traveling through the north channel of Lake Huron this summer 2023?
A suggestion i just saw a utube channel that stressed the importance of making sure you have your valves properly gapped. If not the consequences could result in an entire engine rebuild about 10 grand as opposed to a few hundred dollar gap job check it out the channel is called no regrets
I assume that sort of grinding noise is your bow thruster? Another excellent video thanks for sharing!
Thank you for watching! This video was filmed on July 25th.

I know that Ollie has a "potty pad" onboard. For when she can't be taken for a walk. How do you clean the pad, and keep the liquids from staining the boat? We have three small dogs that will be traveling with us, that require "extra small" life jackets. We are concerned about staining the teak deck, and the hull with runoff.
Does anyone have any thoughts?
Thats definitely a concern! I bet you will have a blast on the loop with your 3 pups. We currently keep Ollie's pad around our washdown pump and use that to wash it down. We have white decks, which stain easily, but we haven't had any issue with Ollie. She doesn't use it that often though, so your mileage may vary!
Are you going to put any more videos out going south???
Well we all know who does all the work, it ain't the captain lol
Absolutely haha
Have you considered a loop cook book?
One day!
Why is that second boat rafting. They could just tie up to the other wall?
The Lock staff tell the boats entering where to go - in this case rafting! They are the experts so they have their own criteria for rafting. Some possible reasons might be not good hardware on one lock wall, certain wind directions making one side worse etc, etc. 😁
Hi Ron! Locks 1-18, excluding 11/12 and 16/17 only have valves on one side of the wall (usually starboard, except for locks 13 and 15).
When the Lock Operator begins filling the lock, water gushes out a series of holes along the one wall, shoots across the width of the lock then hits the opposite wall and circles back. This creates a cross current. Think of it like a flip turn divers do!
Your vessel would be ripped off the wall if you were to go on the opposite wall in these locks. I hope that makes sense!
ahhhhhh goin north is AWESOME, but did you get down into LAKE ERIE ???? or did you miss LAKE ERIE and like PUTINBAY and...and... CEADERPOINT (the amusmant park has a DOCK !!!! of they use to...) my family is from northOHIO and that's where ''vacation'' always USED TO BE...
how about
it's time to START THE ENGINES **THEN** toss the lines.... ;) eh... toss get... eh... yea... :)
Must be nice to have no responsibilities and be able to travel the world, then buy a yacht and do the loop. Maybe you should take a loop around Africa and help the poor!
lol to no responsibilities... I guess you assume money grows on trees and we aren't working 😂😂
