- Ross MacDonald makes his paper by making paper. For the last 25 years, he’s created tens of thousands of paper props for movies and television shows like “Baby’s Day Out,” “Silver Linings Playbook,” “Boardwalk Empire” and “Parks and Recreation.” From handwritten letters to driver’s licenses, each piece is custom made and thoughtfully imbued with backstory. Step into Ross’s Connecticut workshop to see how movie magic gets illustrated, aged, cut and copywritten.

As someone who pauses movies & tv to read the rest of the letters or page, thank you for the work you do, Ross.
Lol sameeeeeeee
Yes!!! This brings me so much joy
Its almost way too much effort for little achievement.
@@manzhanilla did you really? Most of the time, someone actually does the exact same thing. Think about it, millions of people doing nothing different. Thats impossible, of course theres people exactly like you whom pause and read the documents.
@@Nitrodino7875 why are you so jaded?
After this, i dont think ill look at paper props the same way again
Listening to people talking about their passion is one of the most beautiful things to me. Thanks GBS for showing this man's passion and work!
This sort of attention to detail is what made movies beautiful. What a man, must be proud to have your work everywhere like that.
This guy makes me want there to be a props category at the Oscars! What a master of his craft!
Mario Anthony that would be awesome...and inspire others to join the field
I love all your documentaries, but this one really stands out from the others. Such a compelling and unique profile. Well done!
This man does such simple small things, that create such a large impact on the environment around his work, good job man!
No No I think you mean a large impact on Hollywood.
'the environment around his work' would be hollywood......
Kell Manderley Like that vague sentence made sense. It sounded like the guy benefited the environment for the better.
except that's not what they said lol. they said it impacted the environment of his work, like the movie scene, the set.
Kell Manderley No, I think you’re confused, lol you’re adding more shit to defend the OP...just stop.
That's dedication. When someone creates something so convincing, you don't even notice it, because it belongs, that's a master at his craft!
Props to this guy.
I'm dead
Many unsuspecting people who just go into the theatre and applaud the acting of the lead actors never realise the amount of work that is involves by so many people but rarely get a screentime of not more than a few seconds.
I am really glad that you people made this video.
Love this one! So many people don't realise how much crafting goes into the tiniest thing on the film screen. The language of film; complexity made simple. Amazing work Ross MacDonald. Wish we had budget for more people like you in South Africa!
props to this prop maker:)
He honestly sounds more thrilled when talking about movies he contributed to than some of star actors ...
that's because he's not an egomaniac like alot of actors are.
@@kylem1112 so true. What an amazing job. I couldn’t do it. The artistic talent alone is amazing. Plus i have adhd. I would jump of a bridge first. My personal papers are nit organized imagine that. :$))
Propmasters are so interesting to listen to talk about their craft. It’s amazing how many details are involved, how much there really is to think about and how everything comes together.
Sometimes if I’m watching a movie or show on my phone or on t.v I pause it to read the documents, letters, etc. it’s so interesting how much effort is put to into production
This was so fascinating. I would love to make a book prop for a movie!
This video is going to change the life of an aspiring prop maker I'm working with as a college counselor. This story is beautifully told. Thank you.
And I had kept looking and looking for the' Baby's day out' story book with actual in movie with same book cover... Never knew until now about someone's work in there
This is the reason why I appreciate the small details in movies
This guy adds so much context to every movie or show he does, as important as an actor or director. He has changed the way I will look at props now. Thank you GBS for sharing this.
Holy moly. Props to this guy!
Literally!
His passion outweighs all the paper he has ever created..
Reminds me of the behind the scene of The Shining when Kubrick made his secretary type that Jacks a dull boy thing. The secretary's frustration of typing the same thing over and over turns to a scary prop because of how slowly the typing became errored with spacings and whatnot, showing Jack's descend to madness
Apparently a similar thing happened with Se7en. A member of the crew made all of the diary pages and mad scrawling you see over the opening credits, and in making it drove themselves a little crazy
It's amazing when it's created so well that you never question its authenticity.
I always wondered how those papers, documents, tiny details are made . Whenever I watch a good movie I feel the big picture was possible to give such impact only because of the small details and today I learned about someone who dedicates his time to making all this possible thank you
Wow. That was amazing. You never think about these little things that people have to do in order to make a movie work. Truly a form of art.
This feature is one of my favorites. I would love to tour his studio and just look at everything he has made in detail! Beautiful story
When they mentioned parks and recs I screamed out loud. This would be a dream job for me. Love that we get to know more about this. A true artist
I respect Ross for what he does: putting every effort he can to make such detailed props. Great story :)
It’s crazy the jobs that are out there. There’s literally no excuses nowadays. My guy crafts movie paper for a living LETS GO PEOPLE!!!!
OMG.I Love Baby's day out. Brings back childhood memories. Thank you Ross!
I swear most of these videos makes me tear up regardless of subject. This channel really portrays the beauty and nuance of life and the world. Its a nice reminder.
I love how this channel highlights the littlest things that sometimes we forget to appreciate. I love this channel.
I never knew that they put a lot of work in such thing, glad i watch this
This man's work is probably on every movie that I've watched in the last few years.
People will go into great detail to recreate "Fan Prop" books such as the notebook in 'Stranger Things', and 'Indiana Jones' Grail diary. I find that so intriguing.
Watching the paper prop guy and what goes into creating the original is fantastic!
Great content as always!
This is amazing; not only the work that Ross does but the composition of the video as well, great job GBS team!
I've always like Ross MacDonald's illustrations. I had no idea he'd gotten into prop making. Beautiful work, as usual!
His portfolio is fascinating! And he seems to be a humble guy with so much passion for his craft. I made paper props for a short film once. It was posters on the street, product labels, letters etc. It was such an interesting project, even though they neither paid nor credited me at the end.
Now i just want to quit college and do this for the rest of my life
This is brilliant. I appreciate the little things like this in movies and television. Glad it's getting highlighted.
I love how passionate he is about his work.
From times I've been to sets, I must say television shows props are of such a poor quality. This guy puts passion into his work and it shows! Thanks for sharing another wonderful human story!
These stories give me joy
Always with something new👍
I hope this gentleman understands that a whole lot of us movie fans and fanatics wholly appreciate the work and detail he puts into every piece. I regularly pause movies and shows to exam and enjoy the props, books in particular. Great video, thank you for posting it.
This is the job I'd do for a long time, I am actually obsessed with the papers back in the days, it feels so historical and makes me feel like I am a part of the world then.
I m sure it is one of the Most satisfying job in this world ..... he must be a very happy person
Stunning.... I'm in awe of the craft and care he puts in.
just wow.his job is really fascinating and he is putting a lot of effort to his work.you can see passion right there.wow!
whoever made the mummy's the book of the dead, he/she did one hell of a job, that book is so awesome
The ruffling of paper is so soothing
wow and here i thought they either buy it or found it. Great job for all the paper props you've created.
The attention is in the details! What an interesting and talented individual!
This man has Lorem Ipsum committed to memory
This was a great segment...
Loved the video, and finally a longer one. Keep it up! :D
Long time fan of GBS and you guys outdid yourselves with this one. Thank you for some many wonderful videos.
I'm a huge lover of paper, mostly because of movies. So thank you, sir for contributing so much to that! 💕
This is literally the best CZcams channel
Wow, so amazing, what a master craftsman. I've always loved the little authentic props like this in movies, always made me jealous to wonder who gets to hold on to them when the movie ends. Beautiful works of art.
Usually, at least where I live, custom props are returned to whoever made them, the production companies don't really deal in storing all sorts of props, they rent what they need, when they need them. Obviously, something like this book is something they'd order in advance. More regular props like furniture or whatever item you can just go buy a new one of, are either given to someone on the crew, or thrown out. I work as an SFX techie in a special effects & production support company, and that's how it works here in DK.
I remember going to the box store trying to buy the book from Six feet under. I wasn't really aware that there were so many props built for tv. Thanks to make the magic happen!
That's stellar work.
Very proud of this man
It's so interesting to watch this episode!!!
Best video y’all ever uploaded
Wow! Absolutely amazing. Thank you for sharing this!
Brought tears in my eyes! donno why
Really amazing job!!
His craft is impressive. That’s a work I would LOVE to do.

I love all your videos ❤️
Wow! Ross MacDonald is amazing! Thanks for this great video!
What a great and original subject. It's amazing to see how passionate this guy is about his job. :)
Just amazing!!!
Props to this man👏👏
Great Big Story has taught me about Foley, and now about props on movie sets. Thanks.
Almost no body know the background of a big story , thank u GBS to show us this passionate people who love there work and no body notice there work from the big story.☺
Fascinating!!
This gentleman is definitely one of the greats!! 😊👍🤘🤘👏👏👏👏👏👏
That’s super fascinating! What a cool job to have.
"Where has the paper been? Who is using the paper? When is the paper from? How old is it? What kind of paper is it made out of? How was the paper _made_?
Guy at the bar: Can I please just have a paper towel
Props to him.
This is utterly fascinating!!!! I love it!!!!
That's great! I love this!
Fascinating!
Hey you! Yeah you, behind the screen. Some person working at GBS, I want you to know that the videos you post bring a little bit of humanity back into us all. I thank you for that. :)
This man is one of the many unsung heroes of film.
Thank you.:-)
Super cool job!
Brilliant! :D Paper can have such a effect.
I pause the scene to read a full page in a movie or TV show, and the best thing ever is the ones where there's a joke on the page that you don't catch unless you read the paper.
I want to Incorporate this level of detail in my cosplay prop designs. I’m not going to be able to look at movies the same way again, especially since this video showed some of my favorite movies!
this man is a true true true genius. bravo!!
He is living his dream job 💛😭
Chapeau, beautiful.
Ooh i really love it!
I heard this is the kind of job that's going extinct. Hope there are young people there willing to learn this art.
that's both sad and reassuring to hear - i'm studying prop, set and costume design next year in uni, and i absolutely love all these kinds of videos. it's sad in that it's a dying art, but reassuring in that it's a field that i definitely want to go into, and i hope that i can really pursue this as both a job and passion.
Hello! I'm from the Philippines, currently studying Bachelor of Performing Arts major in Theater. since when I was a kid I love doing Origami and other paper foldings.. My curiosity got me here, and also being a fan of Harry Potter makes me recreate different paper stuffs and other props from that film :) I just wanted to share that we're still learning this kind of stuffs under stage craft and props :)
I would love to do this also, and have been thinking of studying prop design next year, but am unsure of it for this exact reason.. I’m worried I won’t be able to get a proper career with it, as the demand is getting lower :(
Hat off sir for you work
When I was watching I was thinking this is a cool guy, then he said he made the pawnee chambers papers and I fell in love. Thank you for that marvelous work hahap
amazing!!
