This is the first video I heard the "holdback" mentioned. 50 years ago the holdback for my TA-4F/J was color coded medium blue/yellow. It is an alloy steel bar machined similar to a dumbbell with a hole through the centerline and a groove in the middle of the 'handle'. The groove thins the wall to the centerline hole so it is strong enough power to "holdback" the aircraft at full power, but will only break if the catapult provides enough power to accelerate the aircraft to a speed above stall. I do not know where the holdback is attached on today's aircraft, or if is similar to what I described. I do still have my half from my last cat shot. So many things have to come together to safely launch an aircraft into the sky.

It’s still exactly the same. The hold back bar attaches to the hold back fitting, just behind the nose gear.

I was a plankowner on the TR. During one of our operations, I believe it was in the VACapes, an A-6 aircraft made a turn which caused a crew member to be blown off the deck and over the side. I have also experienced having to grab a padeye to prevent myself from being blown away while out there. I have fond memories of watching Tomcats go into afterburner on the catapults. The original engines were a bit underpowered, so they had to use the reheat to get going. This produced a blue flame that shot all the way to the JBD. It was most impressive to see at night. However, once they got the A+ Tomcats, they could launch at full military power, which wasn't as visually stunning.

Thank you for another great video! Those flight deck operations when looked at from the outside appears to be chaos but is quite well controlled. Lots going on! Thank you for what you do! Fly Navy!

Reminds me of the '70's being attached to VA-34 BLUEBLASTERS. 18hr work days at sea. We broke the Ike in brand new. Was very nice coming off of the JFK-CV67. Digging your channel. Thank You Sir.

Man, I was doing something important the other day that had me frustrated beyond belief, and your voice came into my head, "Wiggle your fingers and toes," and just like that, the issue was sorted out and fixed. Thanks for the great videos!

Thank you Pail for everything that you do and these videos. It was my dream to be in the Navy since I was little. Made it through boot till 1 week from graduation, got hurt pretty bad and sent home. Was going to be a MA if I would've made it. Miss seeing the F14s, as they were my fav jet. Stay safe and Fly Navy!😎
