Welcome to the big leagues...pure, unedited EA-18G cockpit views of Naval Aviation. No music. No gimmicks. Only one ingredient: Naval Aviation with a little bit of sea foam.
Welcome aboard Growler Jams.

Welcome aboard the flight deck of the USS Theodore Roosevelt from the cockpit of an EA-18G Growler! The Growler is an electronic attack variant of the F/A18-F Super Hornet and today, we are conducting flight operations in the Pacific Ocean near Guam. This video was filmed with permission in 2017.
Around the 1:46 mark, you see me and the director work together to carefully taxi my aircraft right next to a parked Growler. Ultimately, the pilot is responsible for the aircraft when he or she is behind the controls. Even if the director signals the pilot to taxi into another aircraft or object on the flight deck, the burden of responsibility falls primarily on the pilot. Pilots have a lot of trust in directors and mutual trust is vital for the safety of the pilot and ground crew on a packed flight deck.
You can see that radio communications between the pilots and directors are generally not required on the flight deck. I am often asked to include radio comms in my videos, but the truth is that daytime good weather launches and recoveries take place with comms only by exception. You can see that the directors and catapult safety officers can communicate easily with pilots via standardized hand signals. If you would like to see those hand signals broken down further, check out this video:
czcams.com/video/itxCibqCUZw/video.html
Although this is a T-45 video, the jobs and hand signals remain the same with Fleet aircraft.
If there is ever confusion, however, that cannot be resolved via hand signals or the pilot has any concern involving safety, the pilot can transmit on the tower frequency to the "Boss" in the tower. Otherwise, the Navy values radio silence when executing flight operations.
I've been told many times in the comments that some of my viewers see my jams as ASMR. Today, I embrace it. I also intentionally did not "over-edit" this video. I left it "vintage"...without any music or cuts. Let me know in the comments if you prefer this type of approach...pun intended.

Wow. I can take a breath now.
a lot of people don't realize but those WW2+ era carriers like the Lexington (and Intrepid,Midway, Hornet...I think thats all of them, but I might be missing one) are the only aircraft carriers we'll get as Museums. All the nuclear powered aircraft carriers can't be turned into museum ships.
🥰
Noooo, i just KNOW that "Fly Navy" is going to be my new saying and everyone is gonna think I'm an ass (and they'd be right) 😅😅
exelente amigo! gran video!!!
Hi how difficult it would be for a non-US citizen join the Navy and apply for the fighter pilot program(I’m 18 yrs old)
No chance.
With pitching seas those turns would be a lot more uncomfortable. Your mom must think your insane … or you just didn’t tell them how dangerous the job is 😂
If you're ever in need of a wingman i have thousands of hours flight time, experience in fighters, and most air craft, the navy like to call it the Advanced tactical flight school, Maverick and goose call it Top Gun, but we Call it DCS and MSFS 🚀
😂
Your measured narration reminds me of a the late, great, Bob Ross😁 -had me smiling all the way through, except instead of guiding a paint brush you were manoeuvring a 20 ton fighter jet!
So grateful for you 🙏 thank-you
I love these videos. They are fantastic ASMR which is crazy when you consider what serious business is going on. Thanks for putting them out there and giving us a glimpse behind the scenes on what it takes to throw a plane off the side of a boat. The amount of thought (and probably hard lessons) it took to make that work smoothly is pretty astounding. Who came up with that idea, anyway??
Thanks for allowing us to be a “fly in the cockpit!”
You bet!
Gotta have that lucky pen. I rode subs and had to have my dirty coffee cup. Somebody washed it one patrol, I found out who and had clean bilges since he liked to scrub stuff. Took two more patrols to break that cup back in.
TYFYS
Another thank you from up here in Alberta Canada. Have been curious about all this amazing tech since childhood. Cheers!
Thanks for watching!
Always find it so amazing how aircraft carriers can carry so many plans that is an awesome video thank you.
Deployed on America to the North Arabian Sea in the early 80s. After 90 days, I was finally getting off and got a ride to Dodge. Hell, by that time, I would have swum to Diego! Anyway, I had never been catapulted off a carrier and I stupidly figured I would bend forward so I could look out the window during the cat. SLAMMO! Immediately rammed into my seat! The amazing thing though is how all the G-force is immediately gone as soon as you're off the deck. Great fun! Go Navy!
TYFYS.
Look man if your career as a growler driver goes down the drain, you have an EXTREMELY prominent career in voice work 🤣👍🏽
Im glad no one asked about the signature move.........,......................
😂
This was pretty cool. I was waist cat crew on the Roosevelt from 04 to the end of 09 with 2 deployments during that period. I really enjoyed it. I've never actually seen a cat launch from this perspective. I really liked the commentary too. This really brings back memories. Thank you so much.
TYFYS.
I love it!
Hey, Growler Jams! A few months ago I asked if you knew the new callsign I was hearing... Sounded like Pylon? Anyway, found out it's "Pilum" and the new callsign of VAQ-131. No more Skybolt! Turns out a Pilum was a spear used by Roman legions. I guess it fits for the Lancers. Cheers!
Wow. I had no idea. Thanks for sharing. Cheers!
@@GrowlerJams you bet.
Haaa haaa, that looks so sketchy! Like anything about landing on a moving ship isn't sketchy! You navy guys really are something else. Great vid growler.
Tiger Cruise aboard TR in 1991 when she was returning from the Gulf War. Brother was MC aboard. Red shirt, AWO. Flew on P3 before being transferred to the TR. Awesome video!!!!!
So touch and go training. Done that myself.
"anybody got the number for that truck driver school?" Literally sitting here in my truck at the end of the day watching this 🤣
😂
The biggest thank you for the pics!! 💜 💜 💜 I appreciate it enormously!! 🤗💞
Pail, this is the best one yet, behind the deflector, the greenshirt, with the Hey,how you doing around his waist, Hilarious!!
So you would not be on the same altitude as your flight's interval even if you are 180 out on the holding stack?
It depends. Each squadron has its own holding altitude overhead. For safety, we generally stay on our protected altitude, until it’s time for us to commence.
You're gonna' have to speak for yourself. I never considered tanking in a turn to be an issue of any kind. In fact, it was quite normal back in the day. Your probe is WAY out in front of you, so how hard could it be?. Most guys in my squadron would go 10 or 20 plugs without missing and some of us almost never missed and in the F-8 our probe was a couple feet BEHIND the pilot's head so you couldn't see the probe at all when refueling. You did it all by feel. The technique was to position the probe abeam the canopy bow just about where you could reach out and touch it with your left hand if there weren't a canopy in the way. Then you simply held the sight picture of the tanker, added a little power, and noticed a sign wave in the hose to indicate that you were connected. Then push in until you got a green light. Tanker turns, either before, during, or after plugging were not even discussed. We simply did what the tanker pilot did. We didn't refuel on every mission, but I would say we refueled on 70 or 80 percent of our combat hops before or after going feet dry over North Vietnam. I think you're making aerial refueling seem more complicated that it really is.
Mom I'm coming in hot
Growler you're a huge inspiration! I'm currently in high school and next year I'll be applying to the United States Naval Academy for a pilot slot! FLY NAVY!!
It's a neat feeling to perceive that finally I can remember things and I've learned more. I think that your caps (Pail's caps) are a huge deal of it! I am glad a BIG time for that!! 😊🩵 Thank You for making my day and keeping me busy with the P-caps!!! 💕💕💕 ..been better.
Big Fun! Thanks Pail👍🏻
Jet goes fast now
Love your style.
one of the most amazing videos ive ever watched. so profesional and calm, just wow
With this narration the jets began to look like bunnies in a field. "Oop, there goes a jet!" 😆
😂
I think you have the BEST JOB in the world!! Keep Flying!!
NES Top Gun PTSD
😂
Just watching the linkup made me tense.
Thoroughly enjoyed that…. This is the reason I fly helicopters…. Easier to park lol.
😂
I remember seeing a video of a missile detaching and flying across the flight deck before falling off the side, so it's definitely smart that they have you put your hands up while everything's being armed 😅
Has got to be an excellent flight instructor.
Sick ass foo 😎
Your videos are amazing. Do you fly the same aircraft all the time or is it whichever is next in the rotation? I realize it is always the f18, but is it the same F18 each time?
We fly all of the jets in the squadron. We rotate through them.
@@GrowlerJams Thank you.
This is outstanding and something like this I would have been only too willing to buy a coffee pity were not allowed. We need to be able to show our appreciation in some other way
I see why they wanted to switch away from steam-powered catapults.
Never disappointed in these videos.
Sorry Pail @ 1.06 its a Double Signature move and it is a big deal lol... I love these vids man..
😂
🙏💯 thanks mister Growler 👍🏻
