Recently I returned to Malana: The world’s most famous hash village and claimed to be the oldest democracy on earth.
3 years we made a documentary about Malana exploring the history and strange customs like locals not being allowed to touch foreigners, and only the women being working while men count their cash.
This time around we learned unknown truths about certain misconceptions that even I spread in the last doco such as the people of Malana being descendants of Alexander the Great.
My goal with this documentary is to create the most honest exploration of Malana available online. We explore how this village has evolved, whether tourists are to blame for the destruction of their culture and the dramatic increase of trash, and dismantling certain myths that have been propagated by the western world expressed by some of the locals themselves. What we learned completely shocked us.

Hi Tom, I enjoyed your video, and as someone who went to the Parvati Valley every year during the season in the 1970's, when I used to stay in Kasol, there are a few things that I would like to contribute to "the untold truth". The Malana tourist industry is less than thirty years old. Very few Victorian tourists went there and the Assistant Commissioners of Kulu adopted a policy of "non-interference", to the point that Malana was not subject to any form of taxation. In the 1950's, British anthropologists began to study Indian villages and Colin Rosser published a paper in 1953, on his sociological analysis of Malana, as a result of field studies that he carried out while staying there and even in the 1960's, only a few outsiders had ever been. Cannabis has always grown wild throughout Kulu and the Parvati Valley and the people of Malana used it to make various forms of footwear. "Malana Cream" is a 21st century phenomenon. In the 1970’s, the best charas was always referred to by the English as “cream” and by the French and Italians as “crème”. Irrespective of where it was made, it was all rubbed by hand and the quality varied greatly because some people were better at it than others. The plants themselves, all of which were wild, indigenous strains of cannabis indica, varied greatly in height, colour and general appearance, so much so, that charas from Tosh was very different to charas from Bashan or Nectarn, which in turn was very different to that which had been rubbed in Rashol or Malana. In the middle of the 1970's, Malana produced very little charas, simply because the location of their village and their unwillingness to venture outside of their valley, meant that they had very little contact with those of my generation who were living in Manali and the Parvati Valley and who, it can be rightly said, were responsible for the creation of the "charas trade", which itself, is only fifty years old. Although the use of cannabis in India goes back thousands of years, Indian cannabis resin, is a relatively new thing, Bhang was the most popular form of cannabis that was consumed, but Ganja was also widely used. At the end of the 19th century, India was the largest importer of cannabis resin in the world, most of which came from Turkestan, in what is now China, by way of what was known as The Black Jade Road, which went from Yarkand, over the Rohtang Pass to Leh, and then down to Kulu and the Punjab. The report published in 1894, by the Indian Hemp Drugs Commission, illustrates the extent of the Yarkand charas trade, which of course was taxed by the British, and which continued up until the 1930's, when China finally prohibited the trade. In my day, most of the best charas that I bought came from Tosh, Nectarn and Bashan, all of which was rubbed from wild indigenous, "jungle" plants, much of which was rubbed while the plants were still in the ground, but it should be said that like wine, it is a matter of taste. Like any Master of Wine, who can detect the subtle differences in flavour and aroma of the wines of Charmes, Genevrières and Perrières, the vineyards of which are all situated in Meursault, those of us who were involved in what we affectionately called, "the mother business", could identify where the charas was rubbed purely by its flavour and aroma. Malana has now, like Kasol, changed beyond all recognition and although the local people are now enjoying a level of prosperity which was unthinkable forty years ago, they now face the problem of rubbish, pollution and deforestation. For me, the saddest thing of all is that strains of skunk, for want of a better word, are now being introduced into the valley as a way of increasing production, an action on the part of the locals, that I don't think Shiva would have approved of. Boom Shankar, Kailash Pati . . . . . .
Great comment on Malana Village . Your a globe trotter from a generation of people who you could say we're the Cream of the Crop . I got Charas from an old old friend. Done whilst still in the ground very very nice and lasted a year .. went levitating and felt no gravity . It's hard work & Amsterdam is shameless 70 euro a g ? Ah well . Yes I'm not a fan of that skunk it'll ruin the soil aswel . Thanks for your in depth imaginative description of life from the Era of Colonialism. Take Care. From Eire .
Boom Shankar Jimmy . . . .

It's questionable that all the trash around this village has only been thrown by tourists. They allow tourists for exposure and economy and they advise not to touch so why not also have a strict rule about trash? There has to be some responsibility by the villagers themselves also.🙏
Not questionable at all mate...it is because of people who just wanna visit and none of the locals would contribute to that...the rules exist just to avoid this state...but money trumps every tradition mate...its the same in other areas of the himalyas...do you really think that's the best hash in the world?? People harvest and process indica plants growing well over 12000ft where I live...those are genetically stronger plants and have higher cbd
Malana is turning into trash because the locals are straying away from their traditions...selling hash is wrong...its supposed to be distributed to everybody
I saw a few videos of the people here. In one, I saw one tourist was appalled when he came over the hill to the village seeing all the trash. He asked why it was all there and they pretty much told him they don't have any place to put it. The tourist spent all day with other tourists picking up the trash and the locals were laughing at them. It seems that they don't quite understand the long term effects of the trash around their land. They seem to think it is just an issue of space. I hope someone comes along and explains the dangers of pollution and plastic waste in a way that makes them want to take part in keeping their land beautiful and clean.
The villagers also throw there trash outside the village not only the tourist
We, indians are champs when it comes to littering outside, but the inside of our homes are spotless🤢🤮
@@cko9672 indians are also great at recycling and reusing whatever they are able to.
Thanks Tom for educating us and giving a first-hand perspective into their lives and how that has been affected by the tourism.
Your transition to this content has been great. I started watching you back before these longer form documentaries. Alot better than other 'drug' channels.
Man I've been waiting for you to drop a new vid for weeks, you didn't disappoint. Thank you brother and big love!
Thank you for this awesome documentary Tom ! On point as always
In love with this documentry!! You guy's did a brilliant job

its so cool that you came back !!! ...
That's an awesome documentary. Thank you Tom.

Top notch journalism, this is why I’m subscribed
Another top notch doc Tom. Love it
Hello all.... superb informative video.... Thanks Tom
thnx man, enjoyed this a lot!
Hey ive just finished watching your previous malana just now and somehow coincidentally today is the day of your three years later returned for malana upload?am i dreaming?are you getting the traditional dancing performance? You're the coolest documentary host I've seen dude! good food for thought!
such an underrated video.
much love from spain
I've actually been to the Parvati valley many times myself. A lot of the locals belief it's actually the locals themselves who throw trash around. Because the tourists are educated and actually have it in their moral values to not throw trash around in someway or the other. Ofc theres exceptions for both.
Love the content!
Bullshit...

Great video , visited malana recently.. nice to know their ways of life.
You have the contact in malana?
nice one bro!! watched your other vid there from 3 years ago. such a great insight. tradition vs futurism.. its always a tough one.
perhaps we need to look at it like creating new fusion traditions? maybe in 1000 years theyll be talking about how this weird ozzie came and filmed them and start worshipping this video haha who knows..
Im not much of a traditionalist myself. but i understand others can be. History has its place in building the now and the future. so...
proud of you bro. You held our head high and when I heard you're from Jaipur, I couldn't resist but to mention here words of appreciation for your vocalism of our Proud history!!!
He was very knowledgeable and well articulated

Amazing bro!
The grass is always greener is such an interesting dynamic isn’t it, feels bittersweet that these pockets of culture are being devoured by the great dragon of modern "culture".
Amazing video
Comrades, I love your work. your altruistic spirit of sharing traditions and customs, as they are, is beautiful. I will hardly one day go to Malana (health problems) but through you, I can see the beauty... I make medicinal cannabis, I have smoked charas at the boom festival but of course, your experience is rewarding and exciting. one day if you come to Portugal and want to know the south of Portugal, my house and is your house. thank you very much greetings to all of you. I apologize for my english. I use the translator.
Hey! I’m actually very interested in going to Portugal, I have been since I was a kid when I had an older Portuguese friend.
I have been learning European Portuguese off and on for a while now.

Loved the vedio
One interesting thing about this village is that the form of democracy they have is actually attested in the most ancient indo Aryan tribes. When the ancient aryans descended into the subcontinent the tribes around the gangetic valley developed a more centralised and autocratic government, while the tribes that settled on the mountain manteined the more traditional democratic system of the ancient vedic society (very similar to the greek one). While democracy didn't develop in Malala but was probably the way the ancient Indo-European tribes governed themselves, it is probably the oldest democracy. They manteined their political system from the time their ancestors settled there and were never conquered by the other kingdoms. Their appearance is probably related to how isolated they were, they are probably much more closely related to the most ancient vedic tribes. Also, the buddha came from a "kingdom" that ruled itself this way, with a council of the male citizens.
The guy at starts perspective is so on point
I was there at 79 and 82, fantastic experience. todays this village is definitely over...
Nice vibes , nice people , nice talk
Nice hash too.

This is the kind of litness that li like to see 🎉🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Tom read about mahajanapadas(proto- democracies) in ancient india and trade between indus valley and other ancient civilizations and human migrations.
So these dudes went there to give a local a history lesson?!? Guests should be cool and not challenge the people who welcomed them
the tourists should pay a visitation tax to the community employ locals to gather and transport the trash to the next village, and a tourism tax to india for further collection to the next large city landfill.
Ya all should thank the two guys for their acceptional explanation .
Thank you guys! Super sad the medicinal properties of the plant are being lost even up there. :(
Try to document the architecture styles too, before the developers and capitalism lead us away from those ways too. 🙏💫
Thanks my friend
The Strain Hunter guys that you showed a clip of in Malana built and donated a house to some residents there. It would've been sick of you found and showed it hahaha
Really enjoyed your perspective and your take on things. I did watch your and Dakota's previous content a year back, and it was very much on point. Tbh, Malana was not really on my list. I mean when you grow up as an Indian, Kasol Malana is always on your list, but I was not actively planning to visit that place soon. This video inspired me to change my decision and see Malana soon, and now I am planning.
Again. I smoked this hash in the UK in 2009. Back then I was told of its rarity and considered myself very lucky.
So beautiful sir pls come back again very very nice video bro
Nobody in malana is a descendant of Alexander... infact if you search the history books Alexander and any of his army ever made contact with these areas...and about the tourists changing malana,we must understand that everything has a good and bad side... something's might be a blessing while others are certainly bad.. anyways this place is as beautiful as always
I got to check this place out
The audio in this video is so unbalanced I’m surprised it didn’t fall off one of the cliff sides
I can't imagine being in such amazing nature and only staying in the village smoking hash 😅 People are strange sometimes.
outsiders can't stay in the village.
nice man
I don't smoke weed any more it will deceive one thinking they more Spiritual etc ----- but as far as visiting these places yes Social Connection is Great and Beautiful Scenery etc ---- as far as trash each person should pack some out each time and have fines etc for littering etc , but How does one police it ?
Boss, the only descendant from British or Alexander is you, not any Indians, you travel for every 100kms the language change and the people are look different so it's called the biggest Diversity
Yea but I would certainly think that a very very very large percentage of that trash was thrown there by the locals. Because they don't dispose of there trash in a proper way, such as maybe burning it! Don't get me wrong outsiders have and will influence things in the village I'm sure. But when it comes to all the trash that is mainly a local problem in quite sure.........
What a beautiful way to live.
It’s ben from the movie short circuit two the guy in the blue shirt he sounds just like him anyway I wish I could ask this guy to say “Johnny 5 your alive” lmfao 😂😂
He does 😄
Thanks so much for the video! Good to set some myths and beliefs straight about malana and their customs and culture.
But Tom and Dakota dont worry that you are the ones bringing all the tourists. I remember back in 2006-2007 i met groups from my homeland Finland who were backpacking to malana. And sadly mostly because of the weed 😅
This Indian guy needs his own channel
Who's the guy with the ear tattoos?
Yeah you are right, these are descendents of Alexander. When battle fought between Alexander and chankya some of the soldiers of Alexander settled here on the uper part of beas river called kullu.
They aren't descendants of Alexander's soldiers. These claims erupted during the colonial era. Not just the Malana people but the British made this same claim about the Kalash tribe of the Kalash Valley. People of Malana do not believe in this theory and most aren't even aware. They are related to neighbouring Pahadi groups of Himachal but have some Tibetan admixture too.
Hello from KETAMA you are welcome olso to morocoo go old school KETAMA family . We have the best hash in world .
I would have given anything to go to college to be a documentary filmmaker. But I didn't think about that until I after graduated with a photography degree.
Also, I would give anything in the world to go travel to India. And if I went there, I would probably dive deep into their culture. And I would leave the place cleaner than I found it. 😊 #cannabisismedicine
The nature of a persons appearance depends on the location they were born and/or bought up. If you travel from the north-south or east-west people have different features. Though all are Indian!!
It's not that tourists (Bring) trash with them lol. I mean sure they definitely help to create MORE trash yes. However, if it is dispose of (Properly) that shouldn't be a concern. I mean if tourists come and everytime they have a piece of trash they throw it in a garbage or a spot designated for trash is it really there fault. If the locals take the garbage cans and empty them in the forest in a big pile or in there creeks how is that the tourists faults? And those ppl 1000% (have a choice) Everybody has a choice as to how they live. Just because tourists come in and introduce new things to there culture certainly does NOT mean they have to adopt it or accept it. They can have things just to sell to tourists and not use them themselves if they (Choose) I feel like you are making it sound like these people are completely defenseless. Like foreginers are coming into there village and (making) them bend to there will lol. When in reality it looks to me like the native villagers treat tourists like they are beneathe them alot of times. And they certainly have there ways set on how foreigners are treated and what they are allowed to do well in the village. Sooo it seems to me like the villagers have A LOT more control then you guys seem to give credit. You make it seem like we have ruined them when in reality they all seem to say it has helped them in alot of ways. As far as there beliefs those should NOT change reguardless of foreginers coming in or not. And if they do that's there (CHOICE) once again.......
Without a local guide to interpret any conversation, you'll quickly find yourself struggling to get onside with anyone. What is the saying; lost in translation.
Just so you know every blogger acts like this guy 🤭🤭
Is that Dakota?
Great doc, but the guy in blue t-shirt gave you some lessons.
How paternalistic to think the locals aren't smart enough to choose what they want or don't want from the outside world. Foreigners have been visiting Malana since the 70s mate, maybe longer
Blue T shirt guy is real genius 🔥
Wow!😛🙌👌💪👍💟
One correction, ardh shastra is about economics and not about democracy
The converastion with the guy in the blue shirt felt very confrontational, or leading. I enjoyed the documentary otherwise.
Yes
It’s widely known they do the whole “I can’t touch foreigners” gimmick for show
Anybody here ever had *Blonde Lebanese Hash?* I had it fresh off the boat in NEWFOUNDLAND in 1972/73 for $25 a quarter ounce and it was AMAZING.

Interesting video, and I agree with everything, but isn’t the title saying “WEED village” kinda like.. idk shitty?
It’s a village full of weed, but I get your point.
That man in 15th minute was trying hard to save his religious beliefs
But you are right bro
Cannabis is a profitable resource! And they obviously had to get the word of Malana Creme out into the world somehow, right! I just think if that is something (special) that they have to offer then maybe they should give it a little more credit where it is do. They claim they have the BEST hash in the world. To me that's something special and to be proud of......
You know what? I just realized tourism and terrorism. Very similar words and toe completely two different meanings. They often end up doing the same thing. There are many ways to fight a war and one of them is cultural.
Bro can we pluck the malana trees there ???
Bro, Alexander never faught a war with india... He visited here.. And some of yogis.. Thats all.. And indian culture is oldest 8000 to 10000 years back....
thank you !!!
It's not destroying their culture, it birthing it into something new.
If you are worried that much as a western guy about whether their culture is being destroyed, just don't go their yourself doing documents.
All and all I know I stated alot of my own feelings and opinions on the subject of Malana. However, don't get me wrong I did like the epsiode 👍
