  • Although we often identify it with generosity, magnanimity, which literally means "great soul," is richer than that. For Aristotle, great souls are perfectly virtuous persons. But in the Christian tradition, great souls - or saints - are individuals who whole-heartedly embrace the divine likeness in which they're made. Fr. Kerry explores Christian magnanimity and compares it to pusillanimity or "small soulness." He worries that the institutional Church too often encourages spiritual pusillanimity in its members.
