The Gilded Age American Heiress Exhibition opened to the public here at Mapperton on the 5th May. However, if you can’t make it in person you can buy a ticket (3 cups of coffee) for a virtual hour long tour with me, and support this ongoing project over at www.buymeacoffee.com/juliejmo...
A new exhibition offers a glimpse into the captivating world of Alberta Sturges Montagu, the 9th Countess of Sandwich, and an American Heiress from the renowned era known as The Gilded Age.
Curated by Mapperton’s very own American Viscountess, Julie Montagu, the "American Heiress" collection is comprised of more than 10,000 previously unseen letters exchanged between Alberta (Sturges) Montagu and her family, as well as the peerage at large.
Dating from 1888 to 1951, these letters constitute the largest unpublished private collection of correspondence from the period. They offer a remarkable glimpse into the life of a "dollar bride" during the Gilded Age, shedding light on both triumphs and struggles.
The exhibition will explore Alberta's formative years in America, her upbringing in Chicago and New York, and the significance of her inheritance. Visitors will unravel the captivating courtship between Alberta and George Montagu, the future 9th Earl of Sandwich, leading to their marriage in 1905 in London. The narrative will culminate with her relocation to Hinchingbrooke House, the original family seat, in 1916 as the new Countess, following the death of the 8th Earl of Sandwich.
The exhibition takes innovation to the next level by introducing Alberta AI, a ground-breaking creation that brings her story to life like never before.
“With the aid of cutting-edge AI technology, we've resurrected Alberta's voice, allowing her to answer visitors’ burning questions about her remarkable journey,” says Julie Montagu, Viscountess Hinchingbrooke.

Luke & Julie
Viscount and Viscountess Hinchingbrooke 👑👑
Who laughed out loud during this episode? Luke and Julie are absolutely comical without trying 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
“You’re not even funny!” One of the funniest and best episodes you’ve put out over the years 😂
I laughed so much! Luke and Julie are funny accidentally 😂🤣😂🤣😂
36:30 Julie was asking Luke for help & he kept talking about the valuable mud 😂
The lack of sympathy was hilarious 😅
Keep the water circulating and it will help keep algae away. Ponds are a prime example of algae growth because the water stands still. Get a motorized duck to move around the pool to keep the water moving 😀
DEFINITELY clean and maintain the Queen Elizabeth bath/pool. EVERYONE would love to see it and your overnight guests would most certainly use it. It is treasure that could be shared, and an experience for those who are truly interested in the history of your magnificent home, and how the past owners and visitors would have utilized the features of the various pools.
We agree, too! Such a loss to not use it and have it available.
This was so wonderful and fun! Add water bubblers in the pool. Remember what David said, air circulation! Moving water helps to keep the pool clean. On another channel they have made a natural clear pond for trout. Very hard to do so they got a large bubbler that's weighted and hooked it up to a small solar panel to run it. It's just like putting in a soft fountain 😊
You and your husband were funny the way you bounce things off one another 😂Thank you for your CZcams videos 🇦🇺
Have you considered using a number of Horse Hay nets filled / stuffed with good quality Barley straw and distributed around the pool , thinking 3 per side and one at each end . A method I have used in irrigation reservoirs for many years , keeps the water crystal clean , you obviously have very high nitrate levels from the mains water and run off from the fields . Cheers Clive
I miss the days of Luke and Julie kibbitzing and teasing 😂🤣😉
Julie what a lovely person you are. It was really fortuitous when you met Luke and his beautiful family. What a champion you are. xxx
Omg! The two of you are seriously funny! Julie is a trooper. I just saw you go in that underground water basin!😅 I could feel your fear though. And your husband omg. I've been watching your videos and they have given me so much joy and giggles & some really great ideas. I told my husband we have to visit Mapperton!
I went to Mapperton in April, and that pool was beautiful... and scary for this city girl. 🙂
As someone who lives in Pennsylvania (US), I felt your pain with that nettle. Nettles are the bane of my yard; we've been enemies for years!
My husband has dealt with pools for over 40yrs. He saw your original vlog. His suggestion was to build a wall behind the pool walls there is geocloth you can get. Fibreline pool in grey.
But if they excavate all the soil outside the walls to put the film in place the walls would probably collapse.
Keep it original, that’s why it feels so good, it’s natural, it has character
Julie you and Viscount Hinchingbrooke are hilarious! 😂 Thank you for the tour as always. ❤
Julie’s reactions and excitement about the pool are delightful!
THIS IS BY FAR MY FAVORITE EPISODE….I LOVE IT! The title should have been Me and the Pools. 😳😂😂 Luke is the best! So composed and just full of jokes 🤪😂. Julie, thank you for sharing your lives with us.
This was fun to watch the whole pool journey. Your banter together made me laugh & smile throughout.
Without an effective pool filtration system the pool will always be a headache to maintain. Especially one that large.
We owned a mountain ranch that was 100 yrs old. My GGpa built a cement swimming pool in the 1920’s and it so reminded me of your pool. Same type of drainage and filled by our creek that ran through the property. It had all the leaks and cracks in the cement. And the water drained like a sieve. My husband’s remedy was to patch the cracks with a product called O’Henry’s roof patch. It worked quite well and the kids and adults had a great time. We did treat with the pool with clorine because we had young children. Thanks for reminding me of those fun times. You two are so fun.
This is sooooo funny. I,m laughing more at the lack of sympathy shown by Luke 😂. Julie you're a little star sweetheart.
Well done peep's,love it❤
First, you all are adorable!
Second when I was a kid in Indiana, there was a local estate that would allow the local kids to come and use one of the pools in the summer during daylight (with supervision of course). You had to be a local to know how to get to it because you had to walk through the back gardens of a few estates, and it was an amazing secret that we all gate kept and cherished.
Dig down behind the wall and inject sealant into the leaks, then apply a membrane and protection to the area. Equally fill cracks from poolside (this could use clay/bentonite) and repair internal wall. The base cracks need clearing out and tidying before also being filled as per walls. Could also use clay/bentonite. I would also re-design the plug arrangement.
I would also introduce fish (Koi?) to help with water quality.
I love the cat watching you unplug the pool
I’m peeing myself laughing !! Hysterical!! “ can someone mute him?”
Conversation over olimpics made my day 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂Poor Julie 😂😂😂😂😂Luke was of a big help too 😂😂😂😂😂Oh my......that was great😂😂😂😂😂🎉❤
Julie and Luke what a magnificent episode, funny,
Informative, eco friendly what a pleasure to be able to enjoy the life cycle of this most wonderful natural pool. Looking forward to next major program at Mapperton Manor House. Be safe, take care and God Bless 😇👍🙏🏰
I have always kept up with this pool !! Good Summer memories and more to be made !! Hey I was born in the Summet lol I also recognized the hard work you put I n to the pool ❤❤
This underground pool is pure gold. It really should be cleaned and used. People would flock!
Julie, thanks for the entertainment. As for your hubby, my ex father in law was exactly like him...."encouraging " others to do what he wouldn't. Sadly, he passed a few years ago, but he was a fun time at times.
i love this episode so much ! Julie you are so awesome !! i wish i could work for you at Mapperton 💖💖💖
I could never swim with creatures in the pool. Kudos to you🎉! Isn't this the same pool and Elizabeth bath we saw before? Stephen and Claire haven't worked/filmed here in a couple of years. I remember a lot of this footage. 🤔 Lots of memories! Love seeing Stormy again!!!! ❤️ You definitely need your own Reality series to earn money! Love and hugs!!!!! Do you still have your online shopping for both of your channels?
Julie that was such a funny Video I laughed my Head of when you went in the Queens Pool.I agreeI wouldn’t swim in it! ❤😊
Good gravy! Your hubby has to get into this last pool. You are so brave Darlin!
This reminded me of years ago when I once swam in a beautiful running stream in the New Zealand native bush that was icy cold. Very exhilarating!!
Woah, the whole “Pool Saga” in 3 hours! I laughed so hard at seeing the lizard…forgot about him and that first chat with Steve. Nice!
Yes, I have seen this before, but I enjoy watching it again.❤
What about installing a UV filtration system so you stick to no chemicals but it would kill a good bit when you need that (not all the time) and then some type of physical filtration to get the tiny algae out before it drops to the bottom?
They actually have a better system, they have have a floating pier with water plants that are specifically the type that help filter the water. See 1:54:35
@@KW-ew7llCan’t see how it is better. They are having this issue reoccurring with the current system and not just in a little way. Time to rethink the approach.
You say potato and I say potahto
You say ag•ga and I say algae
Potato, potahto, agga, algae
Let's call the whole thing off. 😆
😂I’m dying. Literally the most I’ve laughed in months. Y’all are such a darling pair.
Julie and Luke, if I were in a position to offer you a national award for your historic and preservation actions for the UK 🇬🇧, there would be established a national prize to honour your example for generations to come.
Great video ! Loved it!
3 hour & 11 minute video 😮
That is as long as a Major League Baseball Game. Lets go Cubs. 🇺🇸🇬🇧
Wow! How amazing. I’m afraid I’d be scared to swim in the pool but they are lovely with such history.
Thinking of "natural" swimming pools that I've seen, there are far more plants than those few floating islands provide. Even doubling the number would not bring enough benefits. It needs the reeds mentioned, and as many islands as can be included without impeding the ability to swim.
There ought to be a way of directing the inflow of water through a reed bed. This would remove a lot of nutrients before they got into the rest of the pond.
Well managed natural swimming pools can be crystal clear without the need for any other form of filtration.
The bants between these two! Comedy gold 😂😂😂
Consider building ramps in both the pool and pond so the wildlife can get out. I notice in the dron shots the pond always seems a lof clearer, I think more aquatic plants in the pool like you have discussed would help a lot. Better water flow and aeration would help, maybe get some floating solar powered fountains as a relatively inexpensive way to get that going.
As someone who has a large aquarium, you can actually have a filter without chemicals. It would just involve different types of mechanical and biological filtration. Oase makes great pond filters. You should contact them to see if they would like to do a collaboration.
So, this old pool is really almost more of a pond? I think that’s wonderful. I enjoyed watching your pandemic swims, wishing I had access to something similar. Pressure/power washing looks like a full-body workout. Thank you for the pond pool update!
I am happy with a sea salt solution rather than any chlorine. I'm convinced that you need a liner.
Julie, what about a sauna in the pool house? Like the vikings cold/ warm. It would be a great addition with a changing room.
you need a jack russle that loves to swim and a solar powered fountain pump and some simple windmill sand filters
Love the fountain idea ❤
You are wonderful! I love this video!
Great episode!
The only thing is your pool expert also mentioned that you need to aerate the water and there was no mention of that being done. Not that I've done it myself (except in a small water feature in my garden) but love the idea of a natural pool like a crystal clear swimming hole in a sandy bottom creek or river and had done some research on natural swimming ponds/pools. They stay that way due to the circulation (aeration) of the water so some way of moving the water is still necessary. So airstones, fountains or waterfalls are often included in these natural designs as are biofilters, the plants on the islands is a great start but not nearly enough to keep it crystal clear.
I lived Stormy chasing after the frogs. How many pets do you have Julie? Enjoying this episode soooo much🖤🌸
Am i missing something but wasn't the pool empty before when Julie helped pressure wash the walls
I thought I remembered that as well, but I’m beyond middle aged, and do misremember!
That was a year after this cleaning that she as involved.
But she did see the pool empty before.
Amazing episode 😂🎉 i love the realnesss
Loved seeing Pippa!
You two are hilarious. So nice to see how much fun you have together even after 20 years and raising 4 kids. And, sorry, but you're wrong, Julie. Luke is funny. All the best.
Brava, Julie! The cold water dip was remarkable and know you found it very satisfying. Incredible pool saga, start to finish. What a shame that cleaning actually degraded the
Enjoy your videos thanks for sharing not many get to pull the plug! Lol
Seems like I remember that the "floating islands" were going to keep the water clear.... What happened? Are you thinking about an aerator, yet?
I love to watch this channel x
Thank you for sharing, 😊
Oh my you are so brave getting into that water! No way I would get into anything that I cannot see the bottom. I have worked in the swimming pool industry for 35 years & I know what can & does grow in water when not treated & kept circulating! 😳😁
It would be lovely to put in a heavy liner and make it a pool that quests would feel comfortable in. The guests would be overjoyed and so much less work for your team, safer to swim in too. There are non chlorine cleaners that are healthier.
I believe that there is another, much newer pool.
32:00 I would really love to see a video of this area cleared out and *this* pool drained and cleaned. If you could somehow get a filter and a heater in there it would be a fabulous hot tub but at the very least a filter.
I want to see Luke get into the water, lol!!!
😂😂😂 what a funny video. Loved it.
you could surely males a long wide drag net the width of the pool out of white shade cloth and drag the whole pool one person on either side... that would be faster and less work
The mud was everything! We've got to tether them together now, Julie: No, No, No, No....😂😂😂😂
Where is the ice house? Remember to restock the eels. You need a barrier to prevent dirt from seeping into the pool when it rains.
I have never laughed so hard!
You guys are so cute!
Make the pool a salt pool. You can put fish that can live in it and be able to see them. Solar panels and you can swim in winter! I would drain the queens bathtub and seal it. Could figure out a way to heat it with wood and make a sauna!
Ahhh, the Saga of Splurtle (and poor Nester). I can still hear the echo of poor Nester's ominous refrain "I'm allowed to?". I fear that this same refrain might also be echoed in the unseen "tower", or possibly the unmentionable "dungeon". Where has Nester been?
You have to keep the old doors on the pool equipment room, they are beautiful
Great video! More ramps for wildlife on the floating gardens. Awful when animals drown when they can't get out of the water. Thank you!!
Love the pool supervisor (cat) (:
I had the fun job of cleaning out the bathtub size "water feature" in my back yard, pond or pool would be too grand a name for it, no newts or turtles sad to report. Unfortunately it seems to attract a lot of depressed moles that have lost the will to carry on.
Oh no! Sounds lovely though
Re: More Turtles. I live down in Southern Louisiana. We have lots of "locks" and waterways that are built up like yalls pool. It is full of turtles that are living their best lives! The water is so clean in the locks and those are just water areas held in from the River. I really think the turtles help keep thise areas clean. It is really fun and people go there a lot with their kids to feed them and get pictures. Yall could probably just find 3 or 4 more and the odds of them mating will be good. It could be a nice site for people to visit out there. Sone places have food machines. They are like the old gum ball machines you put quarters into, turn the knob, hold your hand under and it pours out pellets to feed them. That may help with food costs, too. Or yall could have people adopt a turtle and put the name on the shell [or that might not be good for them. Maybe check first] they really are relaxing and fun to watch.
You are both hilarious in this video!!
The best way to control algae and keep the water clear is to have the water circulating and keep koi. Still water causes algae to grow. Koi will help by eating the algae. You need a large enough fountain or waterfall to circulate a pond that size. I’m not sure the plant shelves will be sufficient to filter the water. I suspect you need to submerge them in the water. Consider using river rocks to anchor the plants.
We have a small pond and I find if I keep the water moving with an aerator and waterfall it helps with the algae. Plants also help.
What about the bubbles to oxygenate the water and circulation that David suggested earlier?
Julie and Luke are the best ever 😂
Why not a filter on the water inlet pipe to prevent nutrients from being introduced into the pool?
OMG - Too Funny - Oscar nomination, in a category all your own 😂😂😂 ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
I had to laugh when I saw the cat suddenly get interested in the frogs.
Thought you were to have bubbles under the beds.. maybe a fountain to keep the water moving..
I appreciate the romanticism of a natural pool, but how much cheaper would it have been to replace the pool equipment at this point?
The last we saw the pool still had issues with algae. Did that happen to be fixed with added floating plant platforms?
I was wondering the same. How much would it cost to repair the present filtration system? Using a sand filter? Diatomaceous earth?
That handle on the plug at the bottom of a low-visibility pool seems like a hazard. A good way to snap an ankle.
What, you pressure washed it awhile ago - empty. Or is this an old vlog reinvented?
Luke is the funniest. xxx
The title of this video should be.
"The Story of Mapperton" :
Hanging by a Hinge, Hanging by a Hinge. 😆
They have their own “Stone Hinge” 😂
Is Spurtle the Turtle male or female? Because if you add more turtles you may need to know. I love Spurtle!
Definitely more , a lot more filter plants
Omg 😂😂😂😅❤ you both are hilarious.
Lovely I’ve been a fan from your first show on tv which I just rewatched and discovered this channel. Julie that’s not how you wear a swim cap 😂
I wonder if algea can be harvested and used for something? Fermented and made into an alcoholic beverage, livestock feed, insulation, pasta, etc? Are there fish that eat algea? More turtles would be good but a floating turtle habitat would be nice. Maybe a floating log or something?
OMG, I burst into laughter that insulation & pasta could be interchangeable!! 😂
The pool has almost developed its own personality.
Loved this look back super-long episode. One thing I don’t understand: if jet washing caused damage and leaks, why was it done again?
