United Kingdom
Registrace 19. 07. 2016
Julie and Luke, Viscountess and Viscount Hinchingbrooke, welcome you backstage at Britain’s Finest Manor* to share the joys and challenges of life on a 21st century English country estate.
We are incredibly lucky to live in such beautiful and historic surroundings. But maintaining a large country house is no picnic - even for the family that invented the sandwich. Everything needs constant repair - we’re always running around trying to plug the leaks!
So please help support this important part of England’s heritage and join our journey of restoration and discovery, with weekly episodes, behind-the-scenes content and special events.

ROUND-BREAKING AI BRINGS HISTORY TO LIFE - NEW EXHIBITION UNVEILS THE UNTOLD STORY OF A GILDED AGE AMERICAN HEIRESS.
A new exhibition offers a glimpse into the captivating world of Alberta Sturges Montagu, the 9th Countess of Sandwich, and an American Heiress from the renowned era known as The Gilded Age.
Curated by Mapperton’s very own American Viscountess, Julie Montagu, the "American Heiress" collection is comprised of more than 10,000 previously unseen letters exchanged between Alberta (Sturges) Montagu and her family, as well as the peerage at large.
Dating from 1888 to 1951, these letters constitute the largest unpublished private collection of correspondence from the period. They offer a remarkable glimpse into the life of a "dollar bride" during the Gilded Age, shedding light on both triumphs and struggles.
The exhibition will explore Alberta's formative years in America, her upbringing in Chicago and New York, and the significance of her inheritance. Visitors will unravel the captivating courtship between Alberta and George Montagu, the future 9th Earl of Sandwich, leading to their marriage in 1905 in London. The narrative will culminate with her relocation to Hinchingbrooke House, the original family seat, in 1916 as the new Countess, following the death of the 8th Earl of Sandwich.
The exhibition takes innovation to the next level by introducing Alberta AI, a ground-breaking creation that brings her story to life like never before.
“With the aid of cutting-edge AI technology, we've resurrected Alberta's voice, allowing her to answer visitors’ burning questions about her remarkable journey,” says Julie Montagu, Viscountess Hinchingbrooke.

Fix up the buildings that you can make money on first. if you have to use tarps to prevent further damage.
Should have married an American Heiress ??
Her memory is going to get better and better
Well, 160K subscribers, if each donated $18.75, would be $3million dollars. I supposed dollars is different from pounds, but it would get you close, and while 3million is enormous, divided out, it seems doable.
Maybe think about retreats for neurodiverse, hypersensible or depressed folks or ppl with Sensory processing disorder. Many of them actually would really long for a more quiet, nature based retreat. Also maybe a nonprofit that focuses on supporting Mapperton by collecting funds but also hosting events where people meet and do certain work assignments at Mapperton.
Does Mapperton have an Events Coordinator?
Interesting my parents combined both ways: our stockings were hung from the mantle empty then Christmas Morning we woke up with our filled stocking at the end of our beds, always an orange at the toe, did the same to my kids but I always added Hershey kisses & hugs with all the stuff inside. It gave parents a little longer in bed when we were going threw our stocking presents & fun stuff. I
It gives a sense of how the landscape was created
-- does the government have grants or aid of any kind to help keep these important historical homes kept up and renovated, the owners work so hard save them??
Ever thought of having a fundraising ball? Where people can come and enjoy your delightful home and donate a minimum amount of say 100 GBP, there will be those who can give more, which is even better....just a thought, so that people can feel part of something....I would love to come to one of your dinners but so out of my price range, unfortunately. I love seeing your vlogs and I wish you all the very best in all you do. Your place is truly delightful! Thanks for sharing your beautiful home! Grazie Luke and Julie! 🤩
Hi I’m Debbie Cook (a patron) Have you thought of picking small parts of projects that could be fixed or even partially fixed for between 20 to 50 pounds and setting them up so people could “buy” individual small items that need to be restored . Example would be a painting that needs restoration. Divide it into square inches or millimeters and offer each at a price between 25 and 50 pounds. I would love to “purchase” small affordable repairs like that every month 😀. And it won’t break my budget to do so ❤️
Hi Debbie, that is a great idea! Let me think about how to go about doing this. Thank you!!
Thanks
Thank you so much!
Have you looked for skilled volunteers for some of those repairs? or Students currently studying restoration of historic buildings. They might jump at the chance of getting hands on experience.
Yes, that is my next port of call!
Good Luck- we all have our house repairs
The real issue is that you need to increase the revenue of the business. Do you have a business manager? Whatever farming you are doing needs to be greatly expanded. Do you have an agent for the property to get it used in commercials and movies? Empty buildings need to get converted to revenue generating properties. Finally you need to go after grants and get friendly with philanthropist. You need to get Mackenzie Scott on your contract list.
Have you ever thought about bartering? It would cut some of your cost. ❤
So Sorry but you’ve been way over quoted, my 40yrs at least qualified carpenter/shop fitter husband would do that pergola in max 2 weeks, quote £20,000 and were the other side of Dorchester. So sad to see all these repairs needed.
Do contact us! office@mapperton.com
@@MappertonLive will pass onto my husband.
Jeez, what a heavy responsibility. I count my blessings every day that I can continue to enjoy living in my 1,308 sq. ft. wood frame house built in 1963. Maintaining it is not easy, but so far I've been able to handle most of it over the past 50 years.
A lot of these things weren't meant to last forever. Somethings should be saved and some trashed. In the old days, when a tapestry started to fall apart, a king would just throw it away and buy a new one. No use in saving useless barns but definitely save the orangerie!
Honestly, I think it’s great. You guys are really trying to fix this. The easiest thing to do would be put up for sale.
The stable block, have a horse show fund raiser amongst the equine community, reach out to them. It will be worth it to see the stabel block restored.
Adding to this: Do you have a future farmers group to teach or encourage farming to keep those builds in good repair? Have a slogan made at Mapperton!
Thanks!
Don’t be sad it’s just part of the past, Let it go.
Whats also so mid blowing to me is the quality of these textiles that dresses were made from and are still in amazing condition! We really don't have that quality anymore. It's at least rare!
Can you get grants to help with restoring these historic buildings
Can you rent out more rooms for visitors? The cottage? What happened to your glamping spot?
This was lovely! With the question about when Luke realized likely he’d become responsible for Mapperton as an adult it occurred to me that I didn’t know if you had children and I was happy to learn you did. Also, great to learn about Luke’s interest and knowledge about renewable energy & green methods to fight climate change. In addition I didn’t know about Julie’s yoga expertise! Oh and the rewilding effort! Splendid to learn of these various efforts and interests. I can well imagine 95% of your time is dedicated to Mapperton!
Excessive vegetation on stonework causes a great deal of damage. Get that under control to reduce the rate of deterioration.
Time for you to call in volunteers.
You have so much land, start growing seedlings and saplings to sell!
It’s just unimaginable how these 300 year old dresses were once every day wear and now are historical treasures of yesteryear. Oh the tales these dresses could tell if they could talk!
It just seems like a no-brainer that priority goes to anything that generates income. Any and all cottages that can be revived and monthly rents collected, on a yearly rental basis, would help enormously. I'm sure there are plenty of people in your area that would love to live there!
I would like to see you guys do a. ( dollar ) Not pounds USA dollar
Love watching you guys
Maybe time to downsize. Everyone is struggling, you guys are very fortunate to have what you have.
i don't think i ever realised HOW big the whole estate is ... holy moly.
A small shout out, that you are doing a fabulous job & already doing so much to generate income ie restoring the cottage to generate new income. Well done & keep it up. Thank you for this insightful video showing the reality of these beautiful places & the ‘burden’ of being custodians for future generations.
Mapperton manor and grounds are stunning. What a shame the family waited so long to address restoring this treasure. Thank God you have and are working hard to bring life back to this manor and it’s future. We hope to visit soon.
So amazed for all you have done and continue to do for Mapperton!
Philly in the house
We all have problems that we need to address on our homes. Times are hard and I personally don’t think people have the spare funds as their own property may need repairs replacing etc. perhaps it’s time to see if selling perhaps the cottages would help to relieve some of the burned and ongoing costs. For sure urgent help is needed. But all our repairs are urgent. So I believe that unless you guys think more in the box I can’t see how a few more visitors are going to help deep money pit. And it will only get worse for your children who by luck is going to inherit all this problem. Can’t help but feel sorry for them. Personally I wold run of to London pad and enjoy your Italy home. There got to be more to life then cobbling a few pound together only for more of the same day after day. Your ancestors had the wealth and staff to maintain these problems times are very difficult and certainly not as easy to keep them going.
I visited last weekend, I had the best tour I have ever had, and the Garden were amazing, just wish I had taken a book. Keep going
😢 I wish I could help. I will be living paycheck to paycheck wondering how I can afford rent, insurance, car payment, etc by middle of October. I've had to pawn things in the past to pay something. It's not easy. Things are just too expensive now! Trips will be done too for a while. Life in limbo. I love your videos and your steadfastness with your ideas. ❤ You could have Garden Party's and BBQ's in Summer! You could do a Coloring app. It wouldn't bring in a lot of money but I know I spend hours on it when I have insomnia!!! Coloring the house exterior, interior, flowers, animals, people, wedding, eagles, dresses, etc. Just an idea. Julie, you could teach somewhere. As a family, you may have to just sell more land off. It's sad to think of. Forget about repairing a falling down barn. 😢 Polo matches? Crazy but an idea. Luke, you could go back into your film work. Julie, you could do TV work again. It would bring in something to pay your bills. Sell the Italian house! Sad to think about since it's finished but you could use the money towards Mapperton! You don't need this extra expense !!! We all wished we had a spare house to go to, but we can't afford it! 😢 I'm not intending to sound harsh but Mapperton is your Primary residence!! If you didn't need the extra money for anything, then, yes, have a vacation home somewhere! They are ideas and some are unthinkable, but they may have to be considered 😢! As an historic house and Grade 1 listed, could you lease half the house to someone and you just live in the other half? Not sure if this is possible?! Sell land off to farmers? Love and prayers to you all! Hugs! 🙏❤
We are just about to sell our dairy farm in North Pembrokeshire, with several historic buildings (no-one in the family is interested in farming, and we need to have a simpler life in retirement). Totally understand the costs involved in repairs and restoration - and also finding people with the skills to do the work. I am a volunteer at Picton Castle which, like all historic houses, needs a lot more income to fund repairs.
Are u allowed to put solar anywhere?
Take photos all around the property to put into many different types of calendars. Can also put these same photos on the covers of low/no content books. (Low Content Books and No Content Books is a big passive income here on CZcams.) Can also sell these same photos for wall decor. Can also add these photos to many different coffee table books, along with various stories of life on the property throughout the years. Some images can go on clothing, bedding, wallpaper, etc. Do cut flower/grass press prints and put them on clothing, sheets, wallpaper, purses, etc. Have classes on collecting and pressing flowers. Have classes on taking photos of the surroundings. Have classes on anything and everything. A lesson on the hobbies of the women throughout the history of the property. Sewing. Embroidery. Needlepoint. Lessons on whatever the women did to pass the time away. Once the cookbook has been typed up on the computer, publish it to help support the property. Publish the family letters and such in books, etc. Do like Julie & Julia, the movie, and cook every recipe in the cookbook and do a blog/vlog about it. Have cooking classes. Have artist retreats ... writer retreats ... actors retreats ... any kind of retreat you can think of. Once you've added enough rental rooms/units, rent them out for a week at a time, and during that week have some type of ball. Have Renaissance Fairs. Have Cosplay Fairs. Have various conventions for history buffs ... for historical romance buffs ... for fantasy lover buffs, for book readers/clubs, etc.
You amply illustrate an age old dilemma for English aristocracy. How to maintain their country estates and make them viable. Clearly the Maperton estate is a beautiful but historic money pit requiring never ending costly maintenance. A truely viable business plan must be the starting point. Appealing to the masses for additional support will not I suspect solve your problems in the short or even longer term but may help in filling a hole in the dike or should I say Georgian swimming pool or crowning an eagle topped gatepost n the meantime. Its true Mapperton is a little off the beaten track but I think more could be done to greatly increase visitor numbers to your beautiful estate through targetted advertising and promotion.
I wonder if the The King could offer any advice following his saving of Dumfries House project experiences.
His Highgrove strawberry jam sure sells! 😂
Better go to Dubai and find a wealthy investor.
What about a tv show : "Mapperton Abbey" ? Your house, THE garden, all is beautiful. So you are. Bon courage.
