The Gilded Age American Heiress Exhibition opened to the public here at Mapperton on the 5th May. However, if you can’t make it in person you can buy a ticket (3 cups of coffee) for a virtual hour long tour with me, and support this ongoing project over at www.buymeacoffee.com/juliejmo...
ROUND-BREAKING AI BRINGS HISTORY TO LIFE - NEW EXHIBITION UNVEILS THE UNTOLD STORY OF A GILDED AGE AMERICAN HEIRESS.
A new exhibition offers a glimpse into the captivating world of Alberta Sturges Montagu, the 9th Countess of Sandwich, and an American Heiress from the renowned era known as The Gilded Age.
Curated by Mapperton’s very own American Viscountess, Julie Montagu, the "American Heiress" collection is comprised of more than 10,000 previously unseen letters exchanged between Alberta (Sturges) Montagu and her family, as well as the peerage at large.
Dating from 1888 to 1951, these letters constitute the largest unpublished private collection of correspondence from the period. They offer a remarkable glimpse into the life of a "dollar bride" during the Gilded Age, shedding light on both triumphs and struggles.
The exhibition will explore Alberta's formative years in America, her upbringing in Chicago and New York, and the significance of her inheritance. Visitors will unravel the captivating courtship between Alberta and George Montagu, the future 9th Earl of Sandwich, leading to their marriage in 1905 in London. The narrative will culminate with her relocation to Hinchingbrooke House, the original family seat, in 1916 as the new Countess, following the death of the 8th Earl of Sandwich.
The exhibition takes innovation to the next level by introducing Alberta AI, a ground-breaking creation that brings her story to life like never before.
“With the aid of cutting-edge AI technology, we've resurrected Alberta's voice, allowing her to answer visitors’ burning questions about her remarkable journey,” says Julie Montagu, Viscountess Hinchingbrooke.

Julie, without you and your dissertation we would not be privileged to know more of Alberta and her life. 🥂🙏❤️
Wouldn't Alberta have been so delighted in her lifetime to have known that another American would come along and pay her such a fabulous homage?
And a family member at that!
She works so very hard to keep the history alive. I appreciate her excitement!
Julie - Lady Hinchingbrooke - I am a museum director and curator in Florida and I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed this "curation" video. Shows splendidly the work and detail that goes into curating even a small exhibition. I am very impressed with the display, especially since you are an amateur. Congratulations! I can't get to the UK until next summer. Hopefully you will still have the exhibit up.
Wow, thank you! xx Julie
How fortunate we are treated to this history!!
I can see Julie being a future hologram on tours 100 years from now explaining some of the things she has done at Mapperton! The AI is awesome.
Julie, everyone should be very proud of the work you’re doing for the Montagu and Sandwich families..
Luke really did find himself a gem 💎 (so did Julie)
You did an absolute amazing job on the exhibition of Alberta Montague. You should be very proud of all the hard work you put into it and the amazing journey that brought you here. Congratulations Julie!
Thank you so much!
Julie and Malcom you have done a wonderful job of curating this exhibition. It brought a tear to my eye seeing the photo of Alberta and wondering how proud she would be, knowing her love for archiving, that you have produced this exhibition on her behalf. I am sure she is there in spirit with you.
Julie, you've taken your passion for Luke's American ancestor to a new level with countless hours of hard work and dedication and even vulnerability to create a tribute fit for her and the family. The thread that you, uniquely, are able to pull, of her thoughts and habitual record-keeping into the AI spoken iteration, brings her to life in a very touching and uplifting way. I congratulate you and hope you are so satisfied with the exhibition and that you may bask in the visitors' excitement.
I'm visiting Mapperton and the exhibition with my daughter tomorrow (bank holiday Monday), can't wait!
As an educator, I find the AI of Alberta fascinating. What a tribute!
I saw the walk thru with Julie yesterday and it was marvelous. The room is spectacular, and the exhibit is so well thought out and executed. Julie, you have done a tremendous job and I'm sure Luke, the Earl and Countess are so proud.
I've been transcribing some documents from the mid to late 1800's and ordered acid free tissue paper, a box and a roll of tape and it was not inexpensive. Glad I was able to support even minimally to this project.
Just one last thing: I have envy in my heart for the picture of Julie's desk in the muniment room.
Thank you soooooo much!!!!
The Monday May 10 writing says, “to the Abbey for final coronation rehearsal”
The AI answer was amazing what an incredible function of AI it really does help you understand her as a person. What an incredibly intelligent woman
Julie, if I may be so informal, you are truly a force of nature! What would Mapperton do without you at this point in its history? You are the ultimate American Vicountess…you are SAVING Mapperton🙏🏼 I am in utter AWE of your determination, your never-give-up-ingness!!! Absolutely inspirational!! You and Luke, (again, please forgive the informality), are so very special together💞
That AI is really awesome! And the display is amazing!! I also wanted to give my two cents as a sewist for your next display. As farmers age they break down (you know this) especially silk. I’m not sure how museums do it but there are ways we use the side and waist seams to add ribbons to take the weight off the shoulders for hanging garments. You’ll see this on modern wedding or formal dresses, sweaters, etc. You might want to consider it or look into it to keep those beautiful dresses you keep uncovering in tact! You are such a delight for this family, finding and organizing all of this stuff. Old and “wealthy” families often forget that attending a coronation isn’t commonplace! Lol any family history is special and sometimes having these relics from the past being that past to life!
Fan from Oregon here. I'm a genealogist and really appreciate the work and care you've put into bringing this amazing ancestor to life. I'm quite sure Alberta approves!
I'm currently working on a project to document my grandfather's WW2 service. He, like many of his generation, didn't talk much about the war. Eventually, I'll be self-publishing a small book to give to everyone in the family so his this important part of his life is known by his descendants. Wishing you the best of luck with the exhibit. I'm sure it'll be a hit!!
May you do your Grandpa proud.
Julie, Your Joy, Energy and Commitment to everything you do will go down in History as a remarkable Lady that contributed so so much to the preservation of the Hinchingbrooke Dynasty. Thank You.
Thank you so much!
A display case near a window is not wise. Sun damage happens quite quickly.
Excellent! A quick tip for rehanging the boards (for next season, perhaps). If the hidden fixtures in the bookcases are hooks rather than screwed-in eyelets, re-thread the fishing line as loops with the sections along the tops of the boards running along the back; this requires just one knot per baard, will allow you to take down and re-hang the boards very easily each season, and make it simple to level each one.
Julie! Put a dressing mirror behind that dress so the back is also visible! I wish I could come to the exhibition!
Perfect idea! The rope and wooden rods to cordon off the public look so clumsy in front of the beautiful fragile dress, does it really need to be there? Couldn't a hands off sign work?
I’m always so sorry your time on camera is over. Especially so is this episode. Thank you so much for allowing us to watch the details for this amazing exhibit. I do wish I could be there in person. You are a very remarkable young woman Julie. Well done!
Wow the speaking letters project is creative & hauntingly good history.
No idea why that AI answer made me tear up. It moved me
If you ever put the dress on the mannequin again try putting the foam body into the dress and then put the body with the dress onto the pole. It sometimes makes it much easier as you are putting the dress onto the body on a flat surface!
Noticing the diaries are the same size and shape of a cell phone (our modern-day diary).
You are such a lovely and emgaging person, with a passion for the history of great houses.. you really should have your own tv series !
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 standing ovation for the hard work you put into the exhibition ❤
I second that 👏 👏
And no doubt the countless hours thinking about, deciding on, musing over, and mind-changing that went on!
Thank you so much!!
You and Luke are so amazing. The exhibit is such a gift of historic education and I’m blown away by the ai project!
I love how the background music at the start makes it feel like they're moving furniture in The Sims 😂
You are a delight, caring, and wise and So Appreciated! I love English history but have responsibilities that keep me in Florida so I live instead vicariously through you. Thank you for the wonderful insight and sharing of knowledge and history.
What a wonderful exhibition this will be. I don’t think a detail has been missed. You should be elated and proud of the work you have done to bring this story to life. ❤
The AI was outstanding! It gave me goosebumps! Well done! Well done!
Looking great
A suggestion
Can you put a large standing floor mirror behind the dress so it can be seen front and back
Good idea
THIS IS SO EXCITING. Seeing your hard work come to fruition. You've done a magnificent job. Thank You for letting me join in on the fun.
Julie, this is amazing. All my best wishes for success of your exhibition. Your dedication to your English family honors them and you in a way that is indescribable . Thank you for making this piece of history come❤ alive.
Thank you so much!
Julie, you could take a piece of the special tissue paper and shape it into the inside of the pink hat, just enough to perk it up then slip it onto the hat holder. It would make it hold up over time and show it off better.
I had a quick little thought about the diary display. If you possibly have the option of leaving open The diary from The day the Titanic sank, that is going to raise interest a thousandfold because everybody's interested in the Titanic and to learn more about what this individual was doing on that specific day if there is an entry, could be really exciting to see. I am really thrilled for you and cannot wait to see the outcome of your event! Thank you for bringing us on this journey!
I hang things on see-through plastic line (like fishing line) on a single loop that runs from the nail to and through eyelets on the frame, then up to another nail/hook. That way you just set the height and you can adjust the vertical orientation any way you need to. Looks great through!
So exciting to watch everything came together, all of the hard work and research, all of the hands involved in it , like something magical and serial about it all! It's fascinating all of the letters and journaling that she wrote are all still here and are in such good shape! Amazing!
My husband and I were talking just a few days ago how people used to write down where every penny went in ledgers and wrote everyday what they did where they went no matter how insignificant it may have seemed and most everyday was a delight!
I was born in a town named Sandwich of Illinois, lived there till 5 yrs old then moved to a small town in Indiana after my grandfather passed away to care for our grandmother. 😊
Awesome videos and great job guys
Bravo!!! A job not only well done but with such heartfelt emotion and care in each curated piece of history. When A.I. was mentioned early in the video I did not expect to be moved to tears hearing Alberta's voice explaining, her feelings and thoughts on becoming an American Heiress. Exceptional work Viscountess Hinchingbrooke, wishing you only the very best on this exhibition!!!
I’m so proud of you Julie. So enlightening to see these cherished objects.
Alberta AI is amazing! I have a similar collection of letters from my grandparents, born in 1894 and 1896…your team of transcribers have done such an amazing job to bring her thoughts to life! All I have managed to do is start to put a hint to the contents on a spread sheet…and I’ve only done 1919 - 22 and the letters go through to 1947! During lockdown I read every letter…and their courtship has many similarities in my grandmother’s reluctance initially to accept his proposal! I’m hoping to visit the exhibition next week!
Julie, I hope you have signs that say "do not touch," especially the Fortuna dress and the hats etc. Well done ❤
Wow Julie just wow I’m just speechless ❤❤❤ this peek at your beautiful exhibition you’re a talented Lady I’m enjoying this video i enjoy all your videos Di from Australia 🇦🇺
You are so meticulous. It's so wonderful that you have resurrected all this information. So interesting! Everyone should really appreciate the hard work and imagination you have put into this project. Thank you!
Wow, i found myself emotional listening to Alberta AI, after that short speech its left me wanting to know more… Please write a book based on her letters and journals it would make such a fascinating read. Xxx
Amazing work Julie . You are an asset to your family and England x
Julie, This display is fabulous and brilliant! Congrats to you and all the People who have made it possible.
Very impressive Julie and team! That is quite an accomplishment
All the best Julie for the opening of your wonderful Alberta exhibition. You have put so much into this, I hope the resulting interest brings you much joy. The AI was terrific! It gave so much depth to the written answers. I wonder what Alberta's voice was like?
Ai is scary but if used wisely, uses like what you chose is absolutely outstanding. It took me years of my history degree to even vaguely sound as eloquent as that Ai summary of her life 😆
I think the word where they're looking at the diary about the Abdication, is "executives" aka "The executive", which is chaired by the PM and made up of the most senior ministers. They discuss and decide together the government's policies and approaches to issues. :)
Lol your videos are dopamine bombs for me. I love old things and it kind of reinforces the joy when I watch somebody else loving them too. Like a joyful self reinforcing happiness cycle! :)
Thank you for allowing us to time travel to the past. So fascinating!
OMG are those old Smythson diaries? If so, you should contact them about sponsoring a part of the exhibit😎 Loved following this Gilded Age journey with you!
Julie thank you for the information and your very nice videos regarding Castle,Mansion, beautiful garden and history.
1912 might be interesting to display to see what she might have said about the Titanic.
How wonderful you have all those letters and diaries still its amazing and what a super interesting exhibition it will be thanks for sharing ❤
Monday afternoon, from Sydney Australia. What a difference watching the video on Monday with the internet working properly again. It was so much more interesting being able to see you working at normal speed & sounding better as well. So now I am looking forward to hearing how your opening went & also wishing that you have nice warm springtime weather for the occasion.
Such a beautiful job. Exciting to watch!
Oh my, you did an amazing job! However, Alberta did her due diligence in documenting her life which is truly astounding. Julie take a page from Alberta, one day far in the future, hopefully there will be a beautiful and dedicated individual preserving your history for the masses 🤗
Impressive work ‼️. The AI is an INCREDIBLE asset❣️❣️. Amazing to use technology this way.
PS, the crimson hat is everything❤
I love it too! The colour is amazing and both hats look so clean, brand new!!
I watched an earlier video with both of you talking with the Countess of Sandwich through the ChatGPT technology!!!! This was straight out of Star Trek!!!!!!! WOW!!!!!
WOW Julie what an AMAZING job!!!! You go girl 💞 we are super proud of you showing how talented you are 💗
I like at 1:54 you show a silver box.... from a cupboard full of silver.... silver antiques are HUGE $$ now !!! Are you getting your house ready for tours; for a fee? like Highclere Castle...
This is coming all together so very lovely!!!! 🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤😊
Julie you were born for this. Wow the AI wow the display and even a bigger WOW is your passion for Mapperton and all of its history. I’m so so happy I found you and your AMAZING u tube. I’m so obsessed 😍. Thank you 😊
You will be one day soon be able to have an avatar of her. All her letters, surrounding details of the years she lived in, the places she lived at and certain details of the people she knew will be injected into her avatar. You will probably get an 80 to 90% accuracy. you will be able to interact with her and the avatar will be able to retain anything you discussed and pick up the next time you speak with her, you will be able to show her you are making part of her recipe book...... That is why it is important for everyone living today to keep a record of their lives with as many details as possible so that future generations can meet you. Personally, I can't wait to actually meet George Washington, FDR or Eisenhower...... Fun stuff.
Is there a society of conservators who would be interested in photographing the clothing? Especially since they are all from the same family? So exciting! How do you keep from staring for hours at everything you place? All the dedications in the books alone! Alberta, the American, saving the family again with her intelligence, not just her wealth, one hundred years later! She would be so proud!
Fabulous work you've done in this curation video.💖
At 6:44 where you read Coronation reserved, I read Corornation rehearsal. Totally loving these videos Julie, so interesting! Heading to buy you some coffees so I can do the virtual tour!
All looks great--ps check your fireplace lampshades for tilt pls
Grommets for poster board, so fishing line doesn't cut through the board.
I would so enjoy the idea of being a little part of this place. The only problem is I would have to be an indentured servent till I could no more. What a dream.
This turned out beautiful! I need to buy some coffee.good luck on the exhibition. I'm sure it will be a as success!
Wow. I have been watching for so long and I love how you make me feel like I'm in the room with you. But this last video was the best.....
I loved the history , the warmth and your enthusiasm.
I find that when you are speaking alone, I can hear your Chicago accent, but when you with someone that is British I hear a slight British accent from you 😊
I am also from the Chicago area and a new subscriber
Absolutely beautiful!! I love the AI. Thank you for inviting me into your historical home. :)
I have thoroughly enjoyed this journey with you. Thank you so much for sharing. It has been a joy to watch.
I’m speechless!
This whole exhibition looks amazing & well worth all your dedicated efforts in preparing it to such a high standard!! The AI at the end was incredible use of your dedicated research over the past few years!
This is fantastic, Julie! The exhibit is beautiful and I hope it’s a huge success! I wish I could see it live, but thanks so much for sharing it with this Ohio girl!!
In America we use to call journals “diaries” also. It was just an older used term.
You are amazing Julie!
Fortuny dress is beautiful!
Congratulations on this amazing tribute to Alberta and her family! Wishing you all the best for the exhibit! 🥰
I am excited.
Amazing behind the scenes of an exhibition! Congratulations!!
What a superb job you have done of the exhibition.
Do you have a photo with Alberta wearing the hat on display? That would be cool. Ther AI is wonderful - have you investigated the software that makes photos move that would also be cool - something for the future. Good luck with it all
I wish I could afford to donate! My life is quite in limbo currently! Long story! One day, I hope to visit and to meet you, Luke and staff! Hugs!
Hello from Quebec Canada ! I discovered your channel just recently and love it! I love history and envy you to live in such beautiful place! I am french canadian and would like to volonteer if you need to translate anything for your french speeking visitors.
So interesting to see all the preparation for the exhibit. Malcolm again saves the day 😄. A man of many talents!! The Alberta AI resource is fascinating and such a great idea 👏👏.
The whole place looks great. How fantastic is it to have the AI Alberta going! I might offer this though, that people keep their questions shorter & to the point. She no doubt picks up on the same key words whether the questions are shorter or several in one like you did. I also like the voice you picked for her. I'd be talking to her all the time!
Brilliant set up. ❤I love history. One of my school subjects.
AI was amazing!!!!!!! ❤❤❤
This will be fun
Congratulations ❤
I just love you cause you’re such a “ Dork” and I say that enduring.❤️
