Julie that is an exquisite example of a 1920s beaded dress. Please do not exhibit it on a dress form until you speak with a textile conservator. The sheer weight of the beads could tear or shatter the silk which is about 100 years old now. Best practice is to display them flat however a conservator can give you the best advice. It looks like a museum quality piece and maybe of interest to them.

As an American who despises our society’s love of cheap throw away items, it so so wonderful to see people that are interested in preserving such beautiful historical items. Love the care, interest and joy put into maintaining Mapperton, as shown in these videos. What a treasure.
Oh gosh me too! I WAS going to buy a new gas stove, which with the warranty, was going to cost 4700.00USD, and expected to only last 5-8 years!?! I said “heck NO!” Honestly I’m VERY sick of EVERY appliance needing to be run through my phone, which frankly I want to run over most of the time!!! I found a vintage gas restorer online, and while it MAY cost about 10,000 to have it refurbished and sent to me for install, it will be the last stove I will EVER have to buy, and my grandchildren will be using it long after I’m gone. ❤️❤️❤️
Dress has an Egyptian theme. King Tutankhamen’s tomb was discovered in 1922 so I would guess after that date, but not very much later.
Beautiful beaded 1920s flapper dress. Fortuny was mostly known for his brocades, and velvets, and of course his pleated Delphos/Peplos gowns. Check for a label in the side seams, or if it has a petersham waistband on the inside. His stamp should read "FORTVNY Dse", or Circular label with "Mariano FORTVNY, Venise"
Yes, I was going to mention that the beautiful beaded dress is definitely from the mid-1920s, not the early 1900s, when Julie said that Alberta was married! Still a great dress to display!
Saw a gorgeous Fortuny at an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC in January ! It was my favorite of them all!

I would like to see the dress on a mannequin to see exactly how it fits and where the waist sits. I also thought it looked later than the date of Alberta’s marriage.

Please consult with the V&A on the proper display of beaded antique garments. The beading can shred the silk if not properly draped. This dress is more likely from the 1920s tbh. There should be a number on a label that can be traced to the date of manufacture by the Fortuny museum. The dresses are all exquisite.
The Fortuny dress wouldn't be as early as 1905. I think you will find that it dates to around 1922-23 when the tomb of King Tut was discovered and the rage for all things Egyptian took off.

I understood that Alberta’s letter said she bought the material/length of brocade in 1905 - maybe she didn’t have the fabric made into a dress until the 20’s?

The Fortuny dress is absolutely from the 1920’2.
Have you considered having someone study some of the most iconic dresses and make patterns to make recreations? I imagine recreation dresses could be a popular seller in your shop if you can find a way to create both high quality and cheaper costume versions. The patterns themselves might also sell well.
My daughter and I are both historians and conservators, and yes, I was taught to always wear white cotton gloves, but nowadays when dealing with anything delicate like paper, tissue thin fabrics, not wearing gloves is ideal, just like history changes, so do ideas of how to properly handle things. Back in the 40's the Smithsonian decided to laminate all their paper items in plastic, and it's all having to be undone now, not to mention the British Museum a hundred years ago being distressed that their Elgin Marbles showed signs of original paint, so they had the statues sandblasted to remove it.

The Elgin Marbles should rightly be called The Parthenon Marbles and they were definitely coloured as most greek temples were. They were also stolen and should returned to their rightful home.
I agree with not wearing gloves but it drives me INSANE that she doesn't remove her scratchy fingerless gloves to handle these delicate garments.
The Fortuny dress is Egyptian Revival, featuring motifs of Lotus, the opening of the Tomb of Tutankhamen made everything Egyptian all the rage! The robe/coat seems to be at first glance Chinese, might also be Korean, but I love the little red and blue coat of the Chinese Qing Dynasty!

Whats also so mid blowing to me is the quality of these textiles that dresses were made from and are still in amazing condition! We really don't have that quality anymore. It's at least rare!
Fortuny gown should have label with a number which could provide date. Seems like it might be later than 1905. Julie, this probably goes without saying that you’re getting expert advice on the displaying of heavily beaded gowns. Such a beautiful piece and you have a wealth of choices!
What was the original sandwich? Local preferences might be listed.
Regarding the road sign: I'd suggest that the word CAFE be bigger than the rest of the signs' lettering.

I'm going to start with I am from Oregon, USA. So I'm completely ignorant of pub culture. Back in 2010 I was the executive director for a non profit that had a great deal of local history. We partnered with a local pub on an off night. They loved local history as well. We started the History Pub. Once a month on a Monday we hosted local experts in some local history. It was such a hit! We started with maybe 20 attendees in a small side room to standing room only, 350+ in their largest room. You have such wonderful history that I'm sure plenty would love to hear. You could talk about your sustainability efforts and local area history. Just a suggestion, but the pub sold LOTS OF FOOD AND BEER. It was advertising for our non profit as well. Win win.

That Fortunay dress looks like something in fashion in the 1920’s. Certainly super modern if purchased in the first five years of the twentieth century.

We had vintage fashion shows at my restaurant and events center in the 2000's. Mostly fund raisers for up to 200 people. We had live models who walked thru the dining room to show off the beautiful dresses. They made quite a lovely performance and high English tea. I was the speaker who, over a microphone spoke on the history of each one. Our shows each covered a 20 to 30 year era. It was my friends collection of vintage clothing she was expert in repairing and had stored away in an attic in acid paper when I coaxed her to bring them out for shows.

My absolute favourite sandwich, is a toasted: 2 slices of nice bread, some ham, topped with a sharp cheddar, thin slices of green pepper (or onion) a bit more cheddar, and ham. Buttered outside of bread and toasted on both sides. YUMMY! ❤️
I am having to save things of my mother’s in very quick decisions which will entirely trash some things while preserving others. Watching your work at curating things and clothes has been helping make those decisions. I don’t want to wake up in the night with “noooooooooooo” but rather “whew, glad I kept that, and got rid of that”.
I think people would pay to see all of those gorgeous dresses and gowns!
Your sense of style really gives us an insight into living in these grand estates. Always rugged up in woollen vests, fingerless gloves and hats.
Julie, I don't know if this is even a possibility but maybe you could mention to someone that it would be wonderful if there could be a database of historic clothing / textiles somewhere. Not sure who would sponsor such a thing but V&A, National Heritage, at the moment I can't recall any names but I'm sure you can supply them. Looking at those clothes it simply seems a shame that probably many many houses in the UK have items that could and should be acknowledged. This could include any patterns or sewing items.

I hope you have advice about putting these dresses on manequins - the weight of all those beads could literally pull the dress apart at the seams. I am so glad you have advice about the supporting the creases. I will never forget going to a mùseum and calling up a painting on silk only to open a box full of squar es of silk rather than one complete painting because it had been folded with no support for the creases! As others have said, the beaded dress is definitely post the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb so early 1920s rather than 1905.

imagine how exciting it would be if a new photograph was discovered of her wearing the dress. I look forward to seeing the gown in display form I'm excited to see how it would of looked because I've never seen several styles of formal dress from the time period in photos but never a style like this one before I literally thought it was a 1920's dress for a moment until the time frame when she purchased it during her honeymoon was mentioned. I'm really excited to see how this will look on a mannequin and how it may have been arranged. Just seeing how it glitters I can only imagine how this dress glinted in light at a party or special formal event when Alberta wore it.

❤ the idea of pub night! Consider the muffuletta sandwich - Made on large rounds of sesame bread and layered with olive salad, genoa salami, ham, mortadella, provolone and Swiss cheese. This is my most recent favorite sandwich!
🇨🇦 Oh Julie, you picked such a beautiful dress to display! When you picked it up I could hear beads, and the design! Oh I love it!!😍. I agree with you about the gloves. You put such love and care in to those amazing Georgian dresses, very impressive.
Please consider taking very detailed pictures of all of these historic dresses and put them in a book and sell them and use the profits toward the restoration of the ones that need additional love. I would personally buy that book and I know that multiple different restoration entities and costumers alike would be thrilled with this! Something to consider for an additional line of income!

Exactly what i thought. Plus, are there not sandwich items in Alberta's cookbook? Definitely offer the sandwich that gave the Earl his namesake...is that a thing?
sandwich ideas - like a high tea sandwich tower - but as high tea has protocols of time of day etc - call it something unique - basically treats on a three tier serving stand - of some traditionals and favourites - including chicken mayo watercress/chopped celery - cucumber sandwiches - strawberry sandwiches when they are in season - even BLT with bread-filling-bread-filling-bread - triple decker sandwiches - imagine looking forward to those treats of a sandwich tower if waiting out a rain shower, before venturing out again.

I'll never make it to England to see this exhibition, but I'm totally stoked about seeing it so I hope you will put out a video detailing everything. And that dress is absolutely GORGEOUS.
This sounds like so much fun for the summer! Julie you did fantastic at boxing up the dresses, don't open them more than necessary as each time you do it there is a chance of letting in a moth. A good labelled shelving unit so you can put the last checked dates on the shelves and a description of contents. Mothballs hung on the shelves will also help. I almost thought you had found even more dresses. It would be wonderful if you could have a portrait of you wearing one of them, my pick is the one that will be on display.

Yesterday hubby and I were dreaming of our next road trip, and I pulled out the map of Alaska, where we live. I found two islands in the gulf of Alaska; Hinchinbrook and Montague. I know, spelling, but still... makes you think.

It is pronunced "For-tune-y". There have been numerous exhibits of Fortuny gowns. Gloria Vanderbilt had one of the largest collection for many years. FIT had a wonderful exhibit in 1981. The dresses are mostly worth more if they come in their original storage box. Your so lucky to have them for generations to come!

I would to see a video of what kind of jewelry they wore with these beautiful, exquisite gowns. The litte blouec, in cream colour, has lace . Hand made lace , i believe that was made in Malta 🇲🇹 . Julie. Besides the moth proofer, there are also desiccants for material that help reduce humidity. You may want to ask one of the conservators about those to also put in the boxes. 😊

That Fortuny could honestly be in a museum. I suspect the weight of the beadwork means it could do with more support than hanging on a mannequin?
May I say that the second sign kind of overpowers the lovely, normal street sign. What if you added a larger, antique looking street sign that directs people there, along with the other street info…going back in time… They’d also have more reason to read it. ❤love the show❤
A suggestion for Rob. Maybe a charcuterie-style type offering witn as many items sourced from Mapperton or surrounding areas if not available from Mapperton , with a option paired for wine, with cider and with a good stout. Also maybe a fondue for small to medium groups and offer other items with the fondue to help with a intimate communal/family dinner.

Egg salad and cress is the standard, I know, but I am personally a fan of egg salad and rocket sandwiches with a bit of bacon on...you know, until you're ready for a brunch table service.

The Fortuny dress is exquisite. Definitely 1920s, though. The silhouette wasn't en vogue for women until then. As others have identified, the Egyptian revival pattern is another dating marker. I know you're taking several courses, but add in a history of costume course at some point. If possible, focusing on the last two or three centuries (although learning about clothing make and design from Byzantine times is interesting and helpful for identifying newer items). It's amazing how you'll be able to quickly identify time periods of photos and paintings by clothing alone.
Also, I expect that the Fortuny would not survive long hanging on a mannequin without reinforcement. It's too gorgeous to not preserve, and I know you'll do everything within your power to save it for future generations to enjoy.

Lovely dresses. You could find a way to employ a seamstress to recreate the pattern for commercial use that you could sell - I bet a few Jane Austen festival attendees would love to recreate their own versions!

Perhaps re-consecrate your chapel and have Holy Mass on holy days of obligation, and for weddings! Have the Cafe' open too, for breakfast after Mass!
The Church All Saints already holds services during certain times of year. Despite being a private church, it is consecrated. Until 1977, it was the parish church, at which point it was sold to the Mapperton Estate.
