- After spending years watching Pokemon speedruns through events and my favorite Twitch streamers, I decided to see just how difficult it would really be to learn how to speedrun the first generation, all within a week of streaming on my Twitch channel. Today we're going to find out how easily you can speedrun Pokemon Red and Blue. This video took a lot of time and effort to put together, so I'd really appreciate it if you shared this with a friend. Full Restores only remove stat boosts when they are used at full HP (plus the current route doesn't use Hyper Potions)
As a big fan of Pokemon speed running for years, your format for videos is perfect to give the beginner information ins a digestible and entertaining fashion. Love how meticulous you are!

This is actually really cool and encouraging for anyone wanting to just try to get into speedrunning. I find it such a daunting thing to try and tackle but this makes it look very much doable.

Honestly I'm glad you went with any% glitchless... personally I enjoy watching any speedruns, even ones with arbitrary code execution and things like that, because the precision is always beyond impressive. However, the comment sections on those videos are always spammed with "well this is stupid it doesn't take talent to just cheat through the game" comments and it's nice not to have to read those. Fantastic work improving your PBs in such a short time, hoping to see you go even further with speedrunning!

I really like that you insist so much on the time these things take. Speedrunning always looks glamorous from the outside, but I really appreciate that you show it how it is - a grueling, terrifying, exhausting grind of perfectly timed inputs that you need to carve into your muscle memory... Thank you for your sacrifice. Don't forget to get your 8h per night please. :-)

I'm unsure if that would be very good, as there are only 500 runners. Maybe others just put more time into it. I'm surprised how low a 2:0X is, which in my opinion is pretty dang good. For context Mario times are a LOT LESS OPTIMIZED in the middle of the pack.

Hey Johnstone, i just found your videos last week and there really great. One thing, could you do like a video about how easily you can do all contests? Or do you have one already that i can't find? Also if you end up making one, don't do ORAS contests as they're easy, so i would say do emerald contests or platinum super contests.

I would love to see John do a Catchless run of FireRed or Platinum, where you can't catch any Pokémon, only using those gifted to you or bought (though you can trade if you've received the trade material Pokémon, i.e. buying an abra from the games corner and trading for a Mr.Mime)

A pretty cool goal you reached in just under a week! The game I've been speed running for a long while, is: "Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts." I've played the game since I was very young, and I've never gotten tired of it. Speed running is truly a challenge, even with games that normally wouldn't be difficult... It just so happens though, that my speedrun choice is also incredibly difficult.

2:32 Last I checked, and I should know, I play them a lot, Elder Scrolls and Fallout don't show you percentage completion. At all. A better example would've been Donkey Kong Country 2, since it actually shows you the percentage on your save file on the file select screen.

Really nice video really enjoyed it I have a comment to make about your use of the fast text exploit. It was decided by the community that runs that use this are considered to be any% no major glitches while any% glitchless does ban its use

100% honest this is one of the best poketubers. the others are either annoying or sellouts but you generally have more enjoyable content.

I have so much respect for you taking this on - this is so impressive for just a week of playing! I have one question though, as I thought that the bike shop text speed counted as a glitch, and had its own separate category “Any% No Major Glitches”, has this changed? Sorry if I missed something but I was unsure
That's changed. There's now glitchless classic which doesn't allow manips or instant text and any% glitchless allows for manips and instant text.

Casual Pokemon speedrunning is fun and actually quite easy. I remember beating Pokemon Red in under 4 hours as a kid, before I even knew what speedrunning was.
