I figured this out with anecdotal evidence from my work with elders. I was sometimes in charge of their diet and as you can imagine they had a death grip on meat protein and considered themselves healthy if they eat the occasional banana or salad. They were all weak, frail, very thin hair, bad teeth, funky smell, irregular, with serious underlying health issues in every case. I had two vegetarians in their 80’s that had occasional dairy and no eggs. I did home care for them due to a simple surgery and they looked 20 years younger, no health issues with amazing hair and teeth. Their houses smelled like fruit, fresh air. Was one of the reasons why I went V

I wish I could’ve convinced my grandparent to adopt a plant based diet. She was very much of the old school thinking that animal products are necessary, healthy, and tasty. Unfortunately, her quality of life for the last few years was poor; if she’d been willing to try plant based for a few weeks, I’m sure it would’ve made a difference, but you can’t always make others willing to try something new.

Moving enough and using your muscles is SUPER imporant against frailty and not getting dementia.
I worked with many old people in their home in the Netherlands. NONE vegetarian or vegan. The biggest differences between the healthy and unhealthy had to do with: 1 did they eat junk foods candies etc often and 2 how active they were.

@Riki P. I graduated nursing school recently, and in our books & coursework a plant centered diet is sort of recommended (even in the human biology pre-reqs). The recommendation is a diet high in vitamins, minerals, high in fiber, fruits, vegetables, legumes & lean proteins, whole grains, low in cholesterol & saturated fats & red meats.
That's a plant centered diet! But those words are never used. If you don't already know what a plant centered diet is, you won't catch it unless you're very observant and already familiar with nutrition to a degree.
I mentioned this to my classmates, and they all looked dumbfounded. I had to break it down to them "these recommendations basically mean mostly plants with very little meats." I had to tell them that fiber is only found in plants & cholesterol is only found in animal foods. They had no idea.
From what I've seen, nurses ignore the recommendations for themselves for the most part. I think it's because they're generally stuck in their ways of living & have blinders on, ot maybe they tell themselvesthat the recommendations are for patients. Plus it's hard because the job is so stressful...so it's easy to just fall into an unhealthy eating pattern, or fall deeper into a preexisting one.

Good point about avoiding the illnesses that lead to bed rest. Muscle wasting is not a linear decline but leaps when accidents or illness happen. If we avoid those the muscle loss should be avoided - especially if we weight train. I do think it’s important to track protein intake though. Calorie intake tends to decline as we age and the danger is with that we fail to get enough to stimulate muscle growth.

This is really relevant and important. There are people in their 50’s and 60’s already in nursing homes and/or using walkers. So many of the seniors I know struggle with gall stones, gout, arthritis, hypertension - these are all things greatly helped through a plant based diet. Add to the list these findings, and I wonder why more geriatric health professionals aren’t recommending a plant based diet as the number one strategy to improve health and quality of life.
Unfortunately, it seems that the very demographic who needs to hear (and believe) this information won’t. They all grew up hearing from every authority that meat, dairy, and eggs were completely necessary for strong muscles and bones. The science which contradicts those beliefs just seems new fangled and unreliable to them. Of course, it doesn’t help that few (if any) of their healthcare providers are recommending such a diet.

This is a very good study and I'm glad you covered it. Unlike other studies, one benefit is the entire text is available from your link as opposed to some other studies that will only give a summary.
I will be telling my parents about this study. It is of great benefit to eat 5% more plant protein to replace animal protein.
The medical definition for frailty appears different than what I as a non-medical person would consider it. I'd limit frailty to increased susceptibility to serious injury as well as being too weak to perform everyday activities.
I would venture to guess there are extremely few people who are too weak to perform their daily activities. It really doesn't take too much muscle to do daily activities. Yes, there are disabled people who cannot.
I am very pleased the study accounts for confounding factors in an apparently very rigorous way. A great many studies covered in the media fail to mention if confounding factors are covered, and what they are. Granted, it is too much for the average media consumer to comprehend given their current level of education in the area.

I’ve been following the OMS programme for my condition for three years and I have to say I haven’t noticed an improvement in my condition and am continuing to deteriorate, as is normally the case with MS, it being a degenerative disease. I have noticed, however, that my deterioration may not have been as bad as many of the people I know. It’s difficult to work out whether it’s helping me or not, and recently I gave up fish, which is the only animal product I had been eating. I feel ok, apart from the MS, and have lost a little weight, and certainly no other symptoms.

I worked in long-term care, with the elderly, for many years. I observed that the vegetarians were decidedly more frail than the omnivores. That is, sarcopenia (chronic, debilitating muscle loss) was much more commonly observed. Advanced sarcopenia usually leads to falls, and falls invariably lead to early death. This is simply my experience. Could those vegetarian diets have been better? Sure. I'm not intimately familiar with how and what they ate, so perhaps very careful attention to better diet planning could have made a difference. However, by the time our elderly residents arrived at our facility their sarcopenia had already been present for decades. The damage was done.

I find it hard to reduce it because of legumes, oats, buckwheat which are staples. And that is daily calories of 2270. And this just to maintain 60 kgs. I start skipping an oatmeal and the weight drops below 59. And I do not feel hungry at all. My work is in office and I do not spend a lot of physical energy. I try to exercise but not nearly enough.

    • @tehross425
      @tehross425 Před 2 lety +1

@@stan8926 90g is definitely on the higher side, you would need to eat closer to 50g to maintain, and that 50g is with a generous buffer to meet most of the population's need. In reality you need less, your digestive system actually recycles up to 90g of endogenous proteins each day. Whatever combo of amino acids you intake, your body automatically takes care of the rest. Most people don't have to worry at all about getting enough protein, even most vegans are getting more than recommended. There's no advantage to having excess protein, it just gets converted to carbs and excreted in urine anyways.
Strength training appears to be what the main solution is. That helps build muscle, and that drives up metabolism.
