In 1982 Casio placed its first ad for the AX series of watches in Popular Science magazine. This trio of Casio watches - the AX-1, AX-210, and AX-510, ushered in a new era of digital-analog goodness with it's dual-layered LCD, acoustically transparent speaker, and melody alarm chimes.
The AX-210 featured in this video is the chrome-plated version packing in the melodies Dixie, Greensleeves, and Clementine, and also a Big Ben melody that sounds every day at noon. Classic.

Casio should bring out updated versions of these great retro watches with updated tech and displays.
I have said this for the last 5 years. I am convinced they could make the same or more profit with a range of more sophisticated high-end retro watches than the low-end plastic retro collection they have done for years now. 1982 was probably the peak year of digital watch making - the catalogs from casio, seiko, pulsar and citizen from this period were amazing.
Totally agree. It's like when Samsung made crappy plastic phones until people complained enough and they started making high-end phones.
I also wish they would
@@tylovset : Timex is making a ton of retro watches... and making money at it.
I bet that Casio could really get the cheddar out of the collectors out there. They are taking a basic G-shock, putting it in a "limited edition" case, and tripling the price.
Absolutely. But even when they get close, like with the very popular AE1200, they don't add any cool effects to the display. No transition effects, no cool animations with the stopwatch, count down timer or alarm.
Amazing number of features for almost 40 years ago.
Ian Smith , so true.
Did you know casio made a touchscreen calculator watch that worked by writing the numbers with your finger, also in the 80s
A childhood friend of mine had one back in grade 3. I was in awe of it and remember it to this day. He had the black one on strap! Amazing that it works nearly 40 years later. LCD looks crisp!
I'm amazed at how well it held up.
The decade of the 80s and early 90s, when Casio had imagination when developing their watches (Cosmo Phase, horoscope, watches with games .... and dozens of other models).
An absolutely gorgeous watch. I would love to pick one up.
Wow hope casio make this kind of watch again
Awesome job on the intro.
That watch is such a strange mix of new and old. Recreating an analog dial on a digital screen is the watch equivalent of using a floppy disk icon as a save button. But I still want one, of course.
Haha so true. I still love the analog/digital screens especially the AE series. Thanks for watching!
Stunning beauty,thanks for the video.
Glad you enjoyed it
Fantastic.. On my want list now. 😁
Great introduction and video! Super clean and fun to watch your videos
Thanks a lot!
Omg it's so cool! I want it so bad.
And as always awesome video man this channel is criminally underrated
Thanks man! Just getting started, hopefully more subs soon.
@@WatchingCasio your content quality is really awesome but it'd help with better lighting definitely. Seeing these watches in natural sunlight would be an awesome reference to what they look like irl.
@@badabingbadaboom9251 Thanks for the tip!
Great watch.
I need this watch one of the alarms sounds like my national anthem.
HELLO, HOW ARE YOU GOING , I LIKE YOUR CHANNEL SO MUCH . I AM A LOVER OF THESE RETRO DIGITAL PIECES , IN FACT I AM A COLLECTOR SEVERAL YEARS . IT'S REALLY WORTH THE EFFORT .
A BIG GREETINGS TO YOU AND YOUR CHANNEL .
💪😊👍🙋🏻♂️😉👌
I watch all of your videos the day you publish them. Keep it up, man! You've got me wanting a "new" vintage watch :)
Thank you so much man! Will do.
that is an awesome casio.
Got this in my collection too. Didn‘t wear it for about a year, but after watching this i feel like doing that again. Didn‘t know about this cool chime. Tried the alarms but i always turn of the chime. Greets
Nice! Crack that thing out and give it another look. Pretty cool watch. Too bad about the light.
I can remember seeing one of these on an adult & how futuristic it looked. I've been trying to find the 510 since 2018
Great video. Thanks 👍
Thanks for watching!
Excelente video. 😀😃👏👏
I want a real smartwatch
I said a REAL smartwatch
Casio's AX-210 -PERFECTION
Pure magic!!
I have this one, I love it, I use it everyday :)
That’s a cool watch! The band looks good too.
Very clean shirt. Thank you. Nice watch.
Ha, thank you!
I've always had a thing for Casio digital analog. I have the AX-510 with original band. I didn't know it was palladium! It's in VG condition and everything works with a lovely clean and clear sound coming from the speaker. Fantastic Casio quality from 40 years ago!
The year I was born 😍
Excellent video !!
Thanks for watching!
Cool 😎 wow
Sweet watch 👌🏻
Sure is. Thanks for watching :)
Soooooooooooo coooooooool
Casio should retro this great model !
Nice
Nice 🙂
When was the last time you saw an actual miniature incandescent light bulb on a watch? Because that's not an LED; electroluminescent and LED backlights weren't a thing until the 90s. :)
Holy crap, you're right haha! That's amazing.
the fact that the managed to cram an incandescent bulb on a watch is absolutely out of this world.
I have an incandescent light bulb in my Casio DBC-610 and Nelsonic Space Attacker watches. That was the regular type of watch lighting for a long time, until the electro luminescent Illuminator watches became all the rage.
I still have an incandescent bulb that lights up most of the panel, in an Innovative Time Sports Master from like 1983 or '84. Cheap $10 watch that I got at K-Mart when I was around 15 or 16 years old. Black resin housing with red/white lettering on the crystal. The original resin band is long gone. If I'd known then that I'd still have the watch 35 years later, I would've removed the original and put it away so it wouldn't have been destroyed. Now it's on a cheap black steel bracelet. That was my go-to watch every day for at least the first 15 years of its life. I still take it out and wear if from time to time, but not very often anymore. It's very dated lol.
I used to have a Nelsonic many years ago. Nothing fancy, but it was a decent enough watch. I don't remember the model number anymore since it went MIA a long time ago. Anyway, it was a digital with an alarm and chronograph. One of the main things I remember about it was the speaker was on the front, in the top right corner. Oh yeah... And it had two letter abbreviations for the days of the week across the top and a LCD segment would move over one position at midnight. For some reason I want to say that it had a few melodys for the alarm. The bracelet was thin steel, that had one of those sliding adjusters clasps. They came in either silver or gold models, which I had one of each. Now that I think of it, the bracelet is the exact same kind that comes on the Casio A-500 now.
When I was nine years old, a friend had the very similar AX-1. I thought it was the coolest watch. I never understood how the calendar was able to display, the dual layer LCD explains it. Nice trip down memory lane.
Thanks for sharing!
More interesting than current CASIOs
i want!
I remember this watch very well.A marvelous piece by casio, with stainless steel case ,sharp alarm, dual time, durable.
They should make this retrica series. Even casio Blue thunder model was nice.If you have please make a video.
Man, I've been trying to find a good deal on the blue thunder. I'll keep looking. Thanks for watching!
OMG I would love it if Casio reissued Blue Thunder, or put similar screen tech or features in a G Shock. Imagine if Blue Thunder analogue style was a selectable display in their upcoming G Shock smartwatch!
Well, my DBA-800 has a separate speaker. Also, a DB-V30 review would be awesome.
One of these came into my possession recently and it works perfectly, I love it. The only downside is it doesn't have the original band. Anyone know where I could order one?
I MUST HAVE THEM ALL! lol
Wow, great video! The display on this watch is so cool. Unfortunately, Casio's retro watches are in a very low price bracket that wouldnt support the expense of reissuing or updating models like this.
couldn't they redesign it into a G-Shock and upcharge a little?
very nice :)! btw, your watch was made in january 1985 (you can tell by the serial number)
even cooler if you were born this date!
That's awesome! Thank you for that. I love learning new stuff. Sadly I was born way before that :)
I got one of these as a Christmas present in 1982. Unfortunately it was damaged in 1989 and thrown out. Bugger.
روعه 👍👍👍👏
this watch has the same exact case as the game watch GM 20 watch
That right, man that watch is super cool. Would love to own one.
Is there any chance I can buy it from you? I am now in Taiwan and really enjoy your presentation about CASIO watches...
Please keep up the great work!
Oh jeez, haha. Not right now as I'm still enjoying it! They're not cheap.
Watching Casio Hmm... wonder how much and how to obtain a great classic Casio watch that is actually made in Japan?!
@@dynastyflier Keep looking on eBay. That's your best bet.
I'm selling mine
what is the soundtrack at the first 40 seconds?
Recently came into possession of my late grandfather's AX-250 (I believe it is a nickel plated version but otherwise identical) - however can't get it to work yet. Putting a fresh battery in it just makes it go haywire and scratching sounds come out of the speaker :/
Hmm, weird. Does the battery have a tight fit or is it loose? Not sure about that model, but usually when you put a new battery in you have to use tweezers, or wire, to touch both the AC contact with one end, and the battery with the other end to reset the watch.
May I know how do u open the back case ? I have one but don't know how to open it
What a flashback. Thank you for the Video. I loved the AX-1 and was pressing my nose against the windows of a local watch shop when I was 13. I seem remember there was no LED in the AX-1, it was a micro bulb. But however indeed completley useless. One question, you say you belive the date of the watch runs till 2039. Do you checked this out? I ask this because I want to buy a AX-1 again, my old one is lost many years ago. Thank you for your help.
The years will run out, but since years are on a repeating pattern you can set it to a previous year and still have the correct days and dates so it's really not a problem. www.easycalculation.com/date-day/repeating-calendar-years.php
5:09 anyone else hear the sunday being echoed
Ha, editing error :) good catch
..and apparently the quack of a duck has no echo. 🤷🏻♂️
wait hold up. Where can i buy this wtch brand new? is it still available?
imagine of its come with Black steel bracelet and dark gold or tin color watch.
Can you tell me what battery this watch takes please?
How do you get it out of military time?
is not a speaker is the same piezo buzzer but in the front with a hole to direct the sound, is impossible to put a coil speaker in there.
It is too sad CASIO don’t make this kind of watch anymore... I don’t know how to get one...
You can occasionally find some on Ebay. Check the link in the description.
Watching Casio Thank you for the great information. I will check it out...
Nick Nolte on 48 hrs movie
Casio watches were so much cooler in the 1980s
Where to get the ax-1?????
Jeez, good luck! I've seen the AX-1 on Ebay for like $500 haha.
Too bad they are so expensive!
Rosebud
A Casio tá perdendo 💰 dinheiro, não trazendo esses modelos de volta.🤦🏿♂️🤦♂️.. cadê o diretor de marketing???🤦🏿♂️🤷🏾♂️
🙏🙏🇹🇷
it's not a L.E.D. it's a light bulb! Huge difference.. Blue and consequently white-ish Light Emitting Diodes were only invented in the late 90s or earlier 2000s. Also it's not a speaker, it's the same piezo tech as with any other watch.
Yep I made the mistake of calling it an LED. Are you sure it's not a speaker? I thought it had different tech. Thanks for the corrections!
@@WatchingCasio "Dynamic speakers" have much lower impedance than piezo cells and hence require much more current (1000x), piezo only good for high frequencies. The boom of portable electronics in the 80s' probably the reason I ended up studying & working in electronics, I remember taking digital watches apart from age 6 (1982).. ruining them sadly. The little light bulb always fascinated me. The Japanese were the best and led the way back then, Casio in particular with their calculators such as the fx7000.. I got a collection of vintage...This AX210 is superb BTW.
Very interesting info. Sounds like you were a young watch hacker :) I still regret giving away my GG-9. Thanks for the info on the AX210. I might have some questions on some old Marlin watches I have.
It is a speaker. You need glasses you look up the speaker opening on top of the watch case beside Casio lettering.
@@traviswalker8933 It is a piezoelectric cell, the opening is to let the sound out, many LCD games have sound openings to let the sound out better, watches typically don't so to be more ingress resistant and hence sound muffled. Now don't get me wrong, piezo cells are a type of speaker, the argument was more about that it is not a different technology than typical watches use and not say, a moving coil electromagnetic speaker. I've got great eyesight still thanks, I had noticed the openings.
HOw much is this worth?
Michael Jackson!
It’s not a LED it’s a tiny light bulb unfortunately
$300 on eBay
What happened to your finger?
What do you mean? Oh - that small cut? Who knows haha.
It's a very handsome watch until it starts beeping at you incessantly. Those alarm tones must get old really, really fast.
Ha pretty much 😂
