Oh gosh, the weaning advice tore me up! My green wing hybrid demanded formula until she was almost 10 months! The fact her vet didn't think that was a problem really bothers me

Worst advice: if they are being loud, cover the cage.
The stupid thing is that it does shut them up. Due to circumstances I ended up with two birds and a full time job. Often when I came back home at 5PM the cage would be covered by my roommate "because they were so noisy". One time I forgot something and was only out the door for half an hour only to come home and find out the cage was appearently covered as soon as I stepped out the door. I took them to a sanctuary not long after. Still makes me angry at myself for getting persuaded into owning birds whilst not being able to be there for them. Now the occasional wild bird that needs aid will get a bit more affection than they bargained for. Shouln't have stepped in that piece of twine then you muppet.
If they're loud
Use it as a chance to train them to talk if your want or just make a cool sound you want
Not cover them
Right? It's literally animal abuse! No dog/cat owner would ever say to cover the dog/cat up so it can't see anything if it's being annoying, yet people somehow think that it's fine to do that to a bird?
@@SeabassFishbrains Lots of people leave dogs in crates for hours.
@@SeabassFishbrains I work for a cat rescue. Upon intake when they first come to our shelter if the cat is really spooked/scared/aggressive/defensive when doing their vet exam, once they go to a kennel we cover it with a towel and provide a hide-bed for them. It really helps them acclimate and not get over stimulated by other cats in kennels across from them, or humans.
For example this Friday we got a really scared aggressive kitty, and as of today providing him a place to hide away has helped him open up to human touch and interaction, and not be so scared of other cats or be panicked by noise.
I once read an article that said to ânever touch your bird anywhere or have too strong of a bond with them because itâll make them hormonalâ. This article also tried very hard to sell the alpha/dominance bullcrap. It made having parrots seem more like a disappointing chore than something that could be fun and enjoyable. I became overly anxious about having a bird and constantly worried that Iâd mess up somehow, or that I couldnât be happy while owning one.
Since then, your channel and content has helped me dig myself out of this hole and Iâm very grateful for that. Your advice has very logical backing and my scientific brain just eats it up! I love being able to understand my birdâs psychology.
For the small couple of months I had to care for budgies even though they didn't know any tricks and were barely tame they still didn't feel like a chore because I thought they were cute liked the noises they made and because I was hanging out with them basically 24/7 they felt safe around me and I directly interacted with them more than the owners were ever able to (by the way im considering getting a cockateil but definitely not soon since I have nothing here)
My vet wanted to clip my conureâs wings âjust in caseâ he developed behavior issues đđ that was an emphatic ânoâ from me

My breeder I got my budgie from (they do grooming) asked if I wanted to clip her wings like 5 times and my family was pushing the idea but I said no because clipping is stupid
I always put "Do not clip" underlined in full caps at the top of my vet intake forms any time I have to go to a new vet. I usually add a little blurb of "This bird belongs to an experienced and responsible owner who believes in recall training, being careful about windows/doors and proper bird-proofing of the home." and vets don't argue past that point, even if they are pro-clipping.
Your vet needs to go back to veterinarian school
Its something that was done in the olden days we know better now ..it was before people hot educated about birds..clipping is so bad for a bird..but clipping a chick os a million times worse because in the wild its fly or die..if they cant fly they stop eating to lose weight ...and it's there nature to keep trying to fly they end messed up 8n the head and can still hurt themselves..I honestly think a lot of avian vets have no clue...an avian vet asked me if I bought an egg online to get my bird..I think because he was very young..I got him at 2 months and he went for his microchip at 3 months.. I obviously changed vet .parrot.eggsonline is a scam..that vet of all people should know that..I know ppl sell fertile chicken eggs and nail them to people but macaw eggs are not more valuable..if we could get cheap eggs online everyone would be doing it..hope you changed your vet..that's crazy in this day n age..
I once had someone tell me that itâs not ok to clip birds wings UNLESS the bird is a macaw. I cannot make this up.
When asked why macaws, the person responded, âtheyâre big birds so they canât feel painâ

By their logic If you don't like having your kid runaround loudly, cut off their legs after all "they're big so they can't feel it"
at the second part i had the urge to murder that person.. violently
I once had a blind bird. We couldnt care for it appropriately (we had an aviary but that wasnt the safest for the bird as itd fly and wack into things) so we found it a new home. It ended up living with another bird in a ROUND cage and could navigate the cage perfectly to the point where people didnt think it was blind! Round cages are awesome!
When I first got my budgie my father and my grandpa and grandma told me to just to hold it till it stopped trying to get away from me

When I brought my cockatiel home, he had been left in a room all alone in a large cage. He's only 1.5 years old. Soon as I got him home, I opened his cage door and just let him explore the living room on his own time. House is animal proofed since this is what my fiancée and I do in our free time. He's now a social butterfly that spends all his time hanging out with us, but has no issues going into his cage, especially at night. He quickly learned the cage wasn't a bad thing and now it's just his little safe haven if he needs space. It always comes back to confidence.
The towel one scared me so bad. Why is there so much wrong information out there, who thought that that was a good idea?! Poor bird đ

Way-way back...1990....when I got my African Grey, it was all wing clips, all the time. There was really no free-flying community back in the day. My bird never learned to fly. I stopped clipping her wings 10+ years ago, but she wasn't into flying and man, I regret that so hard. When she got her super sized cage, she wasn't able to fly across it. It's nice to see how far bird ownership has come.
Omg I know! I had budgies and love birds as a teenager (and finches as a child) in the 80s, and we basically never let them out of their cages except for very rare occasions. And the cages werenât large either. I feel so terrible looking back now. We basically treated them like ornamentation. I feel like itâs one of the great things about the Internet, improving the lives of pet birds and increasing awareness

Worst parrot advice Iâve ever received âdonât have a budgie for a class petâ. It was the BEST choice Iâve ever made and my bird, 400 students and their parents couldnât agree more. My bird was the happiest, most social, most verbal bird youâve ever seen. Hundreds of kids learned how to respect animals. Timmyâd wake me up every morning (weekends included đ€ŠđŒââïž) saying âwanna go to school?!?!â Im so glad I didnât leave him home all day long! Heâll even screen out the car window âhey buddy!!! Wanna go to school?!?!âđ€Łđđ€Ł swear to god. PS I learned a lonely custodian would vacuum on his should on seldom nights Iâd leave him at school. My budgie timmy had endless best friends.

I was once told that I should get lots of mirrors for a budgie because "all parrots are vain and mirrors make them happy"
I've read that getting a buggy or other bird I mirror makes it less lonely because it will bond with what it seems is another bird and I've also heard that getting a mirror makes them aggressive because they think they have a mate and it's a nesting box that they have to defend. It seems like either both or neither of those things would be true

Some of the advice people give others is awful. Most of it seems to be from a "traditional vs modern" battle in training/welfare views!
Like some still say clipping aids in bonding (like you mention in your video)...I don't know where to start with how wrong that is!
Or my personal fave is "Punish the parrot if it tries to assert dominance" EUGH There is no dominance and punishing doesn't work!

It's such a shame in many of these cases. Even dog training is held back by so much "Oh it's always been done this way with a choke chain so why would I use positive reinforcement!"
The shop owner I bought my bird, said that if I wanted to tame it, I had to just grab it so it wouldn't be afraid of my hand anymore. I would NEVER
My mom wanted a tame bird, so she wanted the pet shop employee to handle my cockatiel first. Her wings were already clipped, and so he would pull her over to him by her tail feathers when she ran away. He said that was how he trained his bird...

I tried to adopt a parrot here through a parrot shelter, but they demanded a diet of ONLY Harrison's pellets and nutriberries, and they demand to keep you parrot ALWAYS CLIPPED!
You have to join an event of them once a year where they check on the bird. Because a clipped bird will never be a happy social bird.
I backed out and adopted a beautiful Amazon from another shelter.

Almost all of these I personally feel like are so wrong - you canât ever force anyone/anything to want to love/cuddle or even play. It wonât ever work if itâs only one sided

Currently my cockatiel is eating roudybush pellets, I want her to be eating tops pellets. roudybush pellets are the only thing that got her off of seeds. I am soon going to go heavily on transition to tops pellets. she also eats veggies. we are still working on her eating veggies. I am going to get her on your seasonal feeding system once she is eating veggies regularly!
Roudybush is way better than tops, can't you stay on them?

@@Abbanellie well it depends on the kind of pellets. Roudybush is better in overall quality, but that still means you have to look into diffrent kinds like: veggie, fruit flavoured and so on.

I've seen others do that! One member on my husband's side did this to our Sun when she started to not like those in her flock. I freaked out, but she couldn't understand why, even when explaining that doing that is going to cause some serious behavior issues. She also thought it was funny to pull her tail. Then, THEN she would get made that my little baby tried to bite her! Seriously, teasing and set up a bird for behavior problems doesn't work! OYE! Tiki was NOT a dog that she was training! And I don't train dogs like that, either! Some people think they know better than you, when you are the one who has and is always do research to learn the best for your family critters. Just...OYE!

This is a great episode! What you said about donât punish, I learned from my daughter with dog training. There are other techniques to use to achieve the behavior you desire. Like giving treats for good behavior. Or using distraction. Alot of this can be applied to toddlers & young children! Canât wait for part 2. đ
YES YES YES YES!!!!! I often find myself arguing with my husband over this! The pittie, the conures, his nephews...So many better ways to get the actions you are looking for and showing what can/should/need be done!
I feel like most creatures learn the same way (BF Skinners square divided into 1/4th) HOWEVER ONLY HIGHLY EXPERIENCED AND EMPATHETIC trainers will have success with any type of punishment as a last resort and that most pet owners should avoid punishment at all costs.
I also get annoyed however when trainers call themselves "positive "
Exclusives and regularly use negative punishment - just because it's subtle doesn't mean it isn't punishment - and the general public might hear that a certain type of punishment is useful will sadly misuse such advise and inadvertently abuse their pet.

Oh gosh so many horrible bits advice haha! đ The grabbing and flicking of a beak and telling them do REALLY upsets me - how about ready their body language, your own actions and what's going on in the environment and shape their behaviour to stop them biting!

Iâm in the process of adopting a parrot from a rescue that made me take a 4 hour basic bird class, at the end of which they said âAnd we clip all of our rescues, and recommend you clip as wellâ
Iâm having such a hard time not telling them off about that because Iâve already got my heart set on this parrot that theyâre fostering that I want to adopt, so am on my best behavior. But if I didnât want to rescue the parrot so badly I would give them a piece of my mind. They also said âNo round cagesâ lol. But the wing clipping really set me off. Itâs amazing how people can set themselves up as experts and give out such terrible misinformation. Thank you for not being one of those people!
The place I got by bird, they told us to let them stay in their cage for the first week and interact during the second week for ten minutes a day. I knew that this was not the best idea, so I disregarded that. But then, later that day, they called us and told us that that's not true, and we should start interacting with the bird much sooner.

I was purchasing a couple birds from a pet store, and while ringing up my very reasonably sized cage, the cashier told me that my cage was âtoo bigâ for 2 budgies and I should get this tiny tweetie bird looking cage instead. WHAT????? Never purchased anything from that pet store ever again.
Worst advice i got was when we trained our boi to wear "backpack" for transmitter. I was chatting with seller if he have some trick for birds to quick get used to it. And his advice was :"Just put it on and wait till he stop trying to get rid of it." Aaand that was point we stoped talkingđ

So glad you mentioned your conures powdering the pellets. I just transitioned Tulsi to your pellets, she loves them and it took no work to transition her but anyway- I was concerned because she leaves SO MUCH POWDER behind. SO much. I weigh her so she IS eating but good grief the powder, I was concerned it's being wasted. Why do they leave so much powder? What are they eating if there is so much powder lol

I'm really glad you mentioned the fruit issue with (Australian) parrots. Australian plants are extremely old on the evolutionary scale and the bush practically doesn't have sweet fruit. The fruit trends to be hard like gum nuts or full of seeds and starchy like Morton Bay fig. Australian parrots are extremely sensitive to fructose and given regularly will cause all kinds of metabolic diseases, allergies, infertility and a high dose can place the parrot into coma. Fruit orchards cover their trees not only for hail and bird protection but also as a strategy to preserve the native birds that were becoming sick and infertile. Boot the 'fruit and vegetable' phrase appropriate for humans and adopt GRASSES AND GREENS. One of the most convenient ways to improve the diet is to grow the discarded bird seeds and feed them as greens. You need to add more greens. This way inflammatory omega 6 and 9, and lectins have been reduced, it's organic and full of exclusion zone water essential for all flighted creatures.

Omg, my first bird's breeder also told me to holding him in my hand (basically in a banders grip) atleast once a day every day to "keep him tame", I did not follow that advice because I could tell he didn't like it and as a result I have a bird who loves me and I can still put him in a banders grip without a towel when I need to for vet exams because he isn't afraid of me.

We got a 22 year old male Alexandrine Parakeet recently about a month ago from a bird rescue near us and his previous owners said his favorite food was tacos. Ugh, they must have fed him literally everything because he begs sooo bad every time we eat anything. Do you have a video that addresses this further? we do training with him and he Loves it so i think we can get this to be better over time. When you said the dog begging thing, I was like Bingo! That's exactly what it is. He's not aggressive about it at all but just LOVES food. We feed your seasonal diet and pellets which he loves both just not sure how to address it further.
THE HAAAIIRRR!!!!!! OMG I LOVE IT! Also my friend thinks sheâs an expert in birds so when I got one she told me that birds need super small cages since they need to have a small safe space? I donât have the MOST time but obviously I do spend time with my birds. But they spend a lot of time in their cages. So they have flight cages instead.
She's definitely rubbish at Bird care. The most your cage is big the most your parrot is Happy.
The place I got my cockatiel from said to leave millet in his food bowl because that should be a big part of his diet, good thing I had birds previously and did my research because if I didn't I would've listened to them 100% :( also I LOVE THE HAIR!!!!

My neighbor rescued macaws, when I got my cockatiel she told me and showed me how to clip his nails by throwing a towel over him and forcing him on his back so he couldn't bite her. Needless to say we didn't ask for more help from her

@Wattle she toweled my bird and forced him on his back, he was terrified and confused, of course he tried biting! He hated every second of it. You should teach your bird to let you trim their nails intead of forcing them
@Wattle he was a nice bird and would've been fine but she just toweled him anyway. He was fine being touched and was just a baby but she didn't care and that's called fear training and it isn't good

Jamieleigh, maybe you've mentioned it before, but what are your thoughts on avian lights? Are they important or necessary for birds that do not spend any time outdoors?
Iâm picking up a conure this week. Poor girl is only a year old and seems like she kinda got put in the corner and forgotten about. What would be some advice for getting her comfortable the first few days and her cage being in a active environment
When I got my bird I had asked for a fully flighted bird as I already knew clipping a fledging bird was not ideal. The breeder said nothing about that amidst the conversation we were having otherwise and I had forgotten about it. When I showed up to get the bird (having already paid!), not only was my bird clipped but it was a BUTCHERS job of a clip, so short that I could see the skin of her wings. When I expressed my disappointment and upset with this, he laughed and said he hadn't thought I was serious, and then that he did it for her safety to prevent injury. Meanwhile he had almost injured her just from clipping! I was so upset.
On top of that, when he was giving me his "lecture" about care, he said I had to leave SEED ONLY in her cage 24/7 and only feed pellets once a week, and NEVER FRESH. He followed it up with saying he didn't want to hear about it if I didn't follow his instructions "and the bird died", because it was obviously my fault I had killed HIS bird. Wtf? Thankfully I already knew better and had experience with birds so I followed NONE of his "advice" after I left, and gave that bird a much nicer home. Will never go back to him again, and caution anyone I know away from him when they look for birds.
