    Goldlewis won the grand finals at the Red Bull Kumite! Yes, technically he didn't go all the way for sure, but he was there at the grand finals and for the purposes of our video being a match breakdown and all, that's what matters! So enjoy this breakdown where I go over a lot of the hows/whys of what happened, and some thoughts on everything in general. I was physically there at the Kumite and it was a blast! Thanks so much for Red Bull for flying me out there it was a grand time!

      Glad to see the Big Guy is finally getting some love, many people doubted his viability including myself but now it's undeniable he has potential.
      He's definitely a tricky character but he's proven to have a unique arsenal.
      The recent patches seem to have helped him a good lot, hopefully he gets a few more small quality things so more people will start picking him up.
      I'm glad to see the low tier characters getting buffs to become viable and getting a chance to shine.
      Him and Faust are doing pretty good now which is great.

    1) Gobou went into this tournament planning to play Goldlewis against Daru as in his experience the matchup is more even than it is with Zato
    2) Diaphone practiced for fighting Zato more than any other character in the leadup to this tournament
    3) When asked if he was gonna get some matches in with Kid Viper to practice the Goldlewis matchup, he dismissed it as unnecessary because obviously Gobou was gonna play Zato

    • @NickJJU
      @NickJJU Před 2 lety +7

      Being able to do more stuff is great, but do you really think characters like Nago, Sol, Ram, and May don't at least need some damage adjustments? They can do way more damage off of easier conversions than most of the rest of the cast, and I just don't find it fun to play a game where one mistake costs me an entire round just because my opponent's character can delete me in one combo.

    • @ericaisaac64
      @ericaisaac64 Před 2 lety +4

    • @Manglet762
      @Manglet762 Před 2 lety +1

      I'm always mixed on how I feel on this topic of buffing everything instead of doing any amount of nerfs or almost none. Part of me thinks it'd long term turn a game into a mindless who-can-pull-off-their-bullshit-first game where it's more about gimmicks than skill.
      Then the other half of me brings up the fact that besides For Honor which generally did the same thing, I've never really played a game that buffs everything so I wouldn't really know.
      Strive is a game I'm loving so far, maybe will stick around, see what they do and if I like how they're doing it.

    I heard it's an uncommon stratagy for international players to pick under used characters against mostly american players when they are sure that the player in question don't have the matchup knowledge because either they deemed them not tournament viable or they refuse to touch them because they are low tier.
    Just like in a Street Fighter 4 tournament when Infiltration knowledge check PR Balrog with a Hakan counterpick, Gobou checks Diaphone at the start and it paid off quite well as Diaphone is basically forced to try to adapt to Goldlewis as a character (something you can't be doing in a high level tournament). I respect Gobou's reason with picking with Goldlewis for the Grand Finals, but I feel like that was just a part of his scheme.

      It's a tried and true strategy, I don't think there's anything uncommon about it. In tournaments that allows it it's pretty common for players to pick different characters, mostly to cover terrible matchups--e.g. during the grand final of Rage GBVS 2020 summer Gamera switched to Kat as she's better against Ferry.
      Ofc since you'd be spending most of your time practicing your main character, the off character should be either very niche, or being insanely good at the matchups you want to cover. Against smaller FG communities (i.e. everywhere except Japan) the niche plan is extra effective since it'd be hard to prepare even if you know it's coming. Just finding a Goldlewis player as good as Gobou is pretty challenging by itself.

Once they got the corner and wall it was party time, but the rest of the match was a struggle, and resulted in Ino backdashing too much to try to take back the distance that they gave to Goldlewis.

    Pretty clear from how Gobou ran over Diaphone that Diaphone really didn't know the matchup almost at all. That's basically the main part of it, matchup knowledge is super important.
    That surprise pick served Gobou well, also Gobou is definitely one of if not the best Goldlewis player out there too. Gobou also seemed like he was really comfortable with this matchup.

    This is a good example of Top Tier Players using and winning with Characters that nobody uses therefore, even the most experienced players are not used to playing characters they dont come across online or at locals. This doesn't mean Goldlewis is low key a higher tier, it just means there are still players that will exploit player data as a whole and can only get away with it until the player community gets used to Goldlewis.
    This kinda of thing has been a thing for a decade in many fighting games.

  • @ShouVertica
    @ShouVertica Před 2 lety +9

    You can see that Diaphone has zero match experience against goldlewis as Gobou made more than a couple decisions which are fully punishable and Diaphone just letting Gobou perform at optimal range without any special counters is just crazy.
    Diaphone is good but if you have zero matchup experience versus the best GLD player in the world? Yeah, that'll do it.
    In a normal matchup I think I-NO takes the win 6/4. But Diaphone wasn't really playing I-NO how she should be played in that match.

    • @rooflemonger
      @rooflemonger  Před 2 lety +5

      Also, take into consideration how mentally exhausted Diaphone mustve been. Apologyman gave him an extremely rought time, as did Daru. Gobou was great tho, but I also think that if Diaphone wasnt fighting as many people as he was the result couldve been different. It would still be very close regardless.

      check out the tips and tricks guide for goldlewis, a lot of surviving against a character is knowing their options. That said though against constant plus frames the only real survival is to make the read. If he keeps doing big swings you can jump out or just poke him out of it.
