  • Hi Everyone. Trying new things in resin can give exciting results. I know I said wow when these were finished. Wood in resin can be a difficult one and result in a lot of sanding to get the shine on the resin you are looking for. This method you will see you don't need to do much sanding to get the gloss shine you are looking for.

    Steve, you always impress me!
    I would have never thought to use the wood along with the resin.
    One even better thing, I always find it so hard to make jewelry for men.
    These are not just excellent for men, but for women also.
    I am so happy I found your site.

    I've been making paperweights with broken dead wood, twigs and moss I find on walks through the park for about 6 years, awesome to see they have made this particular process available to everyone as not everyone has a forest on their doorstep 👍🏻😊✌🏻

    I can’t wait to use wood with resin, but on a larger scale. I can’t wait to get my business up and running. I have not limited myself to resin. I’ve have upcycled in the past and I want to do so in my business. I’ve been collecting materials for a while. It only makes sense to do so or else I would be spending money on more materials when it’s not necessary.

    I make my own wood bits out of branches that have come off my large oak trees in my back garden… we had a nasty ice storm a couple years ago that caused several branches at the very top of the trees to break off…. Instead of just hauling them off, I had them cut up into smaller pieces and stacked them up… when I was t a pice of wood, I go out, cut off a pice and then shape it up to use it in whatever project I have up my sleeves… i usually stain the piece before using it with my resin … I love oak… love the grain it has,,,,

      @@JaquieAllen I wish I did… I never really thought of taking pictures of stuff I made as gifts for others back then… Sadly, i used up all of that wood I had that was usable… after stacking it up in the back yard along the fence line, it became infested with those wood burrowing ants… unbeknownst to me at the time, the entire back fence was infested with them and I ended up having to have my entire fence replaced… all of the old wood fence panels, posts and that stack of oak was hauled away… a new fence was built with treated lumbar and I now have a pest control company that comes out and sprays my front and back yards…

      @@ZippedUpKitz ok, that’s a shame, thank you for replying

    • @ZippedUpKitz
      @ZippedUpKitz Před rokem

      @@JaquieAllen I am very sorry I cannot show you what I made from some of those pieces of wood… most of it I used for some wood burning pieces… I had one of the branch’s that was about 5-7 inches in diameter sliced up into individual disks that I would then use carbon paper to transfer a design onto the slice of wood… after which I would use my pyrography pen tool to burn the design into the wood itself… then I would let it sit in my oven at 175°F for 4 hours or more if needed, so that the wood would be dried out and then I could seal it with clear resin… I used the same technique on a larger slice and designed a clock face to burn into the piece… drilled a hole in the center and installed a clock mechanism… my favorite piece is one I made for an auction piece for my kid’s elementary school's silent auction fundraiser (when she actually attended a public school. I home school her now but I digress lol) this piece I made was a replica of the Crests from the 4 Houses of Hogwarts! I wish I would have had the presence of mind to take a picture of that clock!!! It was a nice sized slice that wasn't in a circle like the smaller sliced pieces were… this piece was just a little bit bigger than a piece of letter sized notebook paper… if I had to guess, it was probably 10 x 12 inches as a piece of letter sized paper fit perfectly on it with just a little bit wood exposed on all 4 sides of the paper… I sanded the side I was going to use as the clock face down so it was completely smooth,,, then I placed a piece of carbon paper on the freshly sanded side and then took the print out of the Hogwarts houses crest and placed it on the carbon paper and secured both pieces to the wood to prevent them from moving… I used a dotting tool and then Traced the image, transposing onto the wood… after that I used my pyrography pen tool to burn the traced image into the wood… I made some colored stain by blending 99% isopropyl alcohol with some of my alcohol inks so I could stain each house crest with their corresponding color after which I placed the piece into the oven at 175°F for 4 hours to completely dry not only the wood, but the alcohol inks as well… after all of this, I seal it with a clear coat of resin giving it a layer that is approximately 5mm thick… why so thick you might ask? Well, I have to place the numbers for the clock face onto the surface! I drill a hole in the center of the piece itself and then I glued the numbers on the resin coating… in hindsight, I should have placed the numbers on the resin after it was nearly set so that the resin itself would have acted like the glue… after the numbers were applied and the clock mechanism installed, it was finished! The numbers being on the top of the resin made it look like they were floating in the air! It was truly one of the most stunning pieces I have ever made… it brought a hefty $250 to the silent auction fundraiser and there were 77 people who bid on the clock… I was asked by several people who bid on the clock if I would make one for them and if so what I would charge for them… I made 10 more clocks and charged $100 for each one of them! I made $1000 before Christmas that year… my kid had a very nice Christmas lol… if I make another one of these, I will definitely post pictures of it! I have to find some good wood pieces that I can get cut into slices… I apologize for the long winded comment… I figured if I couldn’t show you what I made, I could at least describe what I made and how I did it :) have a blessed day!

    These are beautiful! Thank you so much for showing so much detail on it. I didnt notice a large amount of bubbles from the wood. This is something that I've bumped into with using wood scrap. Do you know if the wood you've used here has been sealed so its not "breathing" into the resin?

    It looks like stuff that could be used by D&D fans. That one looks just like a potion.
    I always wondered if you could flame polish resin like they do when they make aquariums. I've never seen anyone do it, so I doubt it works. That cut edge always looks frosty when they make custom aquariums. When they flame polish it, it goes back to smooth and shiny.
    These look great! I like them.
