    Hi I'm just an early applicant wondering how truly important the personal statement is? because I am under a lot of stress to 'perfect' my draft, despite admissions tutors spending maybe 3 seconds reading it

    • @JesusCollegeOxford1571
      @JesusCollegeOxford1571  Před 9 měsíci +7

      Hi there, we certainly spend more than three seconds reading it! But, the admissions tests are much more important in predicting who will be admitted than the personal statement. It's worth spending your time and effort on the personal statement, but you need to make sure you've got some time to prepare for an admissions test, if your course has a test.

    Hello Dr Williams,
    Thank you for your videos - they have been incredibly informative and reassuring as I develop my personal statement. I was hoping you could help me with two questions:
    Is it okay to talk about applying for politics and economics and not directly mention philosophy when applying for PPE?
    Also, should I put awards I have received from my school on my personal statement, or would they be more helpful in my teacher's reference?
    Thank you so much for your help.

    • @JesusCollegeOxford1571
      @JesusCollegeOxford1571  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Hi there, thanks for your comment!
      Yes, it's fine to omit direct mention of philosophy in a PPE PS. We understand that many will not be applying to PPE at all of their uni choices.
      You can mention awards, but tell us why those awards are evidence of your readiness to be an undergraduate student. In other words, rather than just say: "I won an award", say something like: "I won an award because of.... and this is important for my desire to study xyz degree because...."

    Hi! Thank you for this video. I just had 2 questions about mitigating circumstances.
    1. I just recently (within the last month) got diagnosed with ADHD. However I'm in Year 12 now, so I didn't have any exam support that would normally be given to those with learning difficulties, during my GCSEs. I also couldn't get any help from mental health providers/ psychiatrists. *I was wondering if there is a place on the application form for Oxford where I could detail all this?*
    2. I want to apply for either law or PPE, but I think that my English Literature GCSE was particularly affected by the lack of support. It is my lowest score (An A, my GCSEs are still marked on the old A* - G system). *I was wondering if I could still make a competitive Law/ PPE application?* I'm applying from an independent school abroad, which is why I'm a bit nervous.

    • @JesusCollegeOxford1571
      @JesusCollegeOxford1571  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Hi there, Yes, you can (I believe) register ADHD on the UCAS form and explain the circumstances. Probably best for your teachers to make reference to it in their section of the form, but you can also raise it in your own personal statement.
      2. An A in English Lit is absolutely fine.

It is the possibility that even if I am accepted am unable to go due to economic reasons. Should we learn the swear words of another language?
      In a world where English is a global language, why learn any other language?
      Is any one language better than another?
      Is there any point studying languages with the advent of modern electronic translators?
      If you had a million pounds to find out more about the origins of language, how would you spend it?
      To what extent does a countries culture dictate a language’s vocabulary?
      Translation is reproduction. How do you respond?
      What gets lost in translation?
      What is language?

    Hello professor! I am an aspiring law student and I have watched many of your videos on supercurriculars and have attempted to implement some myself, however I was wondering how broad is the category of supercurriculars? I currently partake in debating/politics/history clubs which include highly relevant skills for Law but aren't (always) specifically Law-related. Would these be applicable for the status of supercurriculars as I take them to further the same skills necessary for Law or would these simply be extracurriculars and something more overtly Law-related be better suited, for example Law society? Thank you for these wonderful videos and I hope you enjoy the new academic term.

    How often do oxford give contextual offers?

    • @JesusCollegeOxford1571
      @JesusCollegeOxford1571  Před 8 měsíci

      We always contextualise applications, but we don't ever make contextual offers.
      This means that we consider someone's academic potential relative to their context. But everyone, regardless of background, needs to meet our entry requirements. Otherwise they will really not enjoy the course. That's why our grade requirements are amongst the lowest of the Russell Group.
      One caveat to this is our foundation year, where students from more disadvantaged backgrounds can be admitted on lower grades and will have an extra year of tuition: foundationyear.ox.ac.uk

Could I ask if that is true that I would have zero chance of getting in if I get a B in m predicted grade?

      For undergraduate students, scholarship are given on financial need to UK based students. Meaning that you do not need a recommendation letter from a teacher for scholarships.
      For your UCAS application, you will need a reference, but this does not need to be from someone who knows you well, it could be from someone at your school or college who can give a general assessment of your academic record.

    Hi Matt, do you have access to any past interview questions for Economics and Management that you could share to help me prepare? Your videos are so helpful! Thanks, Dr. Matt.

      This question has been used for Computer Science and Economics: czcams.com/video/mEKBs6taixw/video.html
      Then there are the following:
      Consider a production line.What could be done to help the worker to get away from the routine?
      How would you market a rock band?
      Should governments subsidise agriculture?
      Would I be justified in saying that only morons play sport?
      Do bankers deserve their high pay or should government limit it?
      What is the difference between buying and selling of slaves and the buying and selling of football players?
      What is the point of using NHS money to keep old people alive?
      How many petrol stations are there in America?

    Hi Matt I’m a PPE applicant at Jesus College. I just gave the TSA today and am confident of achieving a good score. When can I expect to hear back from the college regarding the interview or the lack thereof. Also one more question ; I read that the college only takes 7-8 PPE undergraduates per year. Is that comparatively less than other colleges and would it put one at a disadvantage? Or would you be reallocated to another college in certain situations?
    Thank you

      @JesusCollegeOxford1571  Před 8 měsíci

      Hi there, You should hear whether you will be interviewed in mid to late November. 7-8 PPE students is average to large for an Oxford college. Yes, you could be reallocated to another college. All best, Matt

    Dear Dr Matt Williams, thank you for your excellent videos. My son is very keen to apply for Oxford. He has just started a-level English, Politics, Maths with a view to study PPE at Oxford. The school however is warning him that his Maths is not strong enough and is advising to change Maths to Economics or History. Please could you advise if he does either English, Politics, Economics or alternatively English, Politics, History, which Oxford University courses would receive my application. Very grateful for any help you can give, David

      @JesusCollegeOxford1571  Před 9 měsíci

      Thanks David! So, Maths will be very helpful for PPE. It's not strictly required, but 95% of PPE students have maths A-level. But there are a lot of good options with the other subjects you mentioned, including: history, English, history and politics, and law.

      Dear Dr Matt, thank you so much for your helpful and quick reply. If I may trouble you for three more please? My son is very keen on the tutorial one on one or two on one style of learning. Would that apply please to a degree in History and Politics degree? Can one take H & P at Jesus? And finally please… could he follow on with a Master’s degree in almost any subject? Economics for instance?

    • @JesusCollegeOxford1571
      @JesusCollegeOxford1571  Před 9 měsíci

      Hi there, 1) yes, tutorials are used for all of our degree programmes. 2) yes, we offer history and politics at Jesus College. 3) you would need to have an undergraduate degree in economics to pursue a Masters degree in it. With a history and politics degree you could do Masters in those two subjects, or something related, like international relations or sociology.

    Hello, I want to apply to Oxford but I didn’t get the best GCSE grades ( 4 8s, 4 7s, 6, 5 and a 4). Would I still have a competitive application if I did a lot of super curriculars and a good grade on the MAT

    • @JesusCollegeOxford1571
      @JesusCollegeOxford1571  Před 9 měsíci +1

      We don't have any particular GCSE expectations, except for medicine at Oxford. So, yes, provided you are on course to get the required A-level grades (or equivalent qualifications) and do well in the MAT, you should be competitive.

    why do grades mattere this much then?

    • @JesusCollegeOxford1571
      @JesusCollegeOxford1571  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Grades matter to provide evidence that you will enjoy the course. If someone doesn't obtain AAA and wants to study law, for example, they will hate the course. Sometimes we admit people who have not met their grade offer, on account of extenuating circumstances. But we don't want to admit people who will really dislike their uni experience.
