  • An interesting introduction to the way that Oxford Colleges are compared along with arresting images of the top three. The video introduces the method used for comparing the colleges, the Norrington Table, and the contribution of Sir Arthur Norrington, former President of Trinity College, to that method. It also provides a brief introduction to the role of college and university at Oxford and begins to answer the oft asked question: what is the difference between college and university at Oxford. In listing the top colleges the video also provides a sample of students who have become famous after their stay at Oxford including: Kris Kristofferson, Oscar Wilde, John Fowles, Hugh Grant, Andrew Wiles and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

I asked this exact question on our tour today, but loved the explanation here as well. Thanks for both the tour and the videos, Rob!

I lived in Oxford in 2002 and 2003 so I went on some college tours and quite frankly the most outstanding colleges to me were All Souls and Merton however I visited Balliol for a seminar and I still thrive on that experience to this day, thank you.

Campion Hall is a small, Jesuit private College but is amazing and of a very high standard It's a male college but women can study there , if allowed to, but cannot live in. It's a truly wonderful, very special place. In 2008 they hosted for a special dinner for the Dalai Lama's interpreter, who is a personal friend of mine. He loved it there , as did I. Gerry Hughes (the philosopher one) and Fr Norman Tanner were marvellous back in the day.

I am a great admirer of Campion Hall. Please forgive me for not including it in the video. It is a permanent private hall and as such is not recognised as a college of Oxford.

As a Merton College alumnus, I quite rightly applaud the ratings that have been applied here. Having spent many decades, of and on at Merton, I can attest to it`s sheer historical importance, the astonishing survival of the medieval library, and the beauty of the college buildings.
Sorry, you did indeed provide an incorrect spelling of Magdalen College, usually confused with it`s Cambridge counterpart though :)

Yes Merton is very special including its setting with views over Christchurch Meadow. Have finally spotted the Magdalen typo. A before E except in the SEA.

@@TheRobWaltersShow Indeed :) For anyone interested, Bodleian ( Library ) Publishing produced, last year a very nice book on Merton College Library, the history, the artifacts and books, with plenty of colour photographs along the way = splendid production !

An entertaining video but the Norrington methodology fails to consider advanced degrees, students who take those qualifications or graduate-only colleges. Perhaps a metric of students at matriculation rather than graduation would be more comprehensive.

Wait. Catz were second in 2020 when you don't use the averages.. I didn't believe it at the time of course, it's always been known for 'mid-table mediocrity'. I hope that this wasn't achieved with the usual practice of kicking out your potential thirds and 2:2s early one.
