- Happy New Year! I finally add ventilation in the loft of my log cabin and I raise the bed off the floor as the first steps in my renovation plans for the off grid cabin in preparation for my wife’s arrival in a couple of days.

I recently put a bed frame together from Amazon and I was exhausted and felt accomplished... this dude built an entire small village of cabins by hand with minimal tools literally straight from the surrounding trees. Holy shit

Yeah, and everything he's built is straight, and level, with right angles, and no holes or visible mistakes anywhere, and its all beautiful, and suitable for dead of winter snowstorm living. And its all neat, and orderly. Are y'all sure there isn't a cast of thousands hiding somewhere? No, of course I don't think so, but his work is pretty magnificent..and impressive as all get out.
I literally cannot comprehend it.... I don’t think any of us can understand how absurdly difficult and taxing these builds must’ve been. So much respect for him.
😊 Andy, just think of your forefathers who did the same. That is pretty amazing to see, how it was done. My GrandPa made barrels, wheels, carriages and so from wood by hand, and to see those handtools in action reminds me of him.
I think what makes it really appealing is that he seems to be a genuinely good person, with a kind heart and common sense
I think he is amazing and I guess the only people who would thumbs down, are jealous as they know they could never be like him.
I think so too, I can't even imagine how you can thumbs down this. It's incredibly meaningful and fulfilling what he's doing, I wish I had a dad like that. So excited to see what the future holds.

I live in downtown Toronto. I think about you and your cabin every time I'm stuck in traffic. If you ever wake up one morning and hear somebody outside playing with the dog, that will be me.

@Yar Nunya how does any of that compare to the blissful dog panting and fluffy tail wagging? The smell of venison cooking with idk mulberry fig crumble in the oven. Doesn't even compare to the tricked out hearse you speak of.

Welcome to the cabin Mrs. James. You Shawn and Cali are so blessed to be living by self reliance - of course all the extremely hard work and dedication has made this happen. Wishing you good health and more added happiness and satisfaction in your lives every day. ♡
The fastest way to burn the sauna down is to dry clothes in there. Our log cabin sauna in Finland almost burned down when someone left a towel hanging too close to the sauna stove. Be careful, I'd hate to see all that beautiful work go to waste. We still dry towels in there but we learned our lesson.
When the timing's good, it would be interesting to hear what Mrs James' plans and projects are as well. We know she likes to be off camera but you'll know how to present it.
Agree - would be interesting to see what sorts of activities make Mrs J happy and how she can pursue them at the cabin. For me, adjusting my pastimes of canning food and baking to fit a wood fire environment would be a bit of a learning curve, but being able to run a sewing machine and having bright enough light to do artwork in the evenings would be pretty important too!
@@AuntieDeb71 If you can wing it, add a treadle sewing machine. I purchased one that is now 105 yrs old, built in 1915, just love it. And, do the things you love. I paint also. We have 3 1/2 yrs to go yet. Still have main house, in one state where husband works. And, 2 1/2 hrs into another state have our farmhouse. We bought it nearly 8 yrs ago now. A good 10 or more yrs prior to retirement. We've saved, lived lean- and continue to get our farmhouse prepared. Will do a major reno- adding on a sunroom, remodel kitchen and dining areas. But, have the rest done. New roof and painting. All out buildings are here, we bought an old homestead that started in 1865, So, wood stove- bottled water all through the winter- we can relate. We have 2 wells too, 5 acres. Just enough for us. To be able to live the dream- is what it's all about. Kudos to you both. Our's is only part off-grid, we have solar and installed all that 6 yrs ago, only drawback- is the cold zaps the batteries. So if you guys put a system in- reinforce those batterys indoors. Ours are in the barn- and well, will have to replace every 7 yrs or so. Love these video's.

I was 3 when my sister read Laura Ingalls Wilder to me for the 1st time - Little House in the Big Woods. Watching Shawn's videos puts pictures to that life. I keep a copy of off her books in the library in hopes the grandkids will someday enjoy reading how others build their shelters from their environment and live off the land. My granddaughter lives you tube for kids and I would really love to have her be interested in sharing Shawn's journey on you tube. It's so educational, relaxing and provides for thought provoking dialogue. It sure beats today's TV for children. TY Shawn

As so much of my own country is being devoured by bush fires at the moment, I have to admit that I have often looked at all the trees so close to your cabin with a little concern. Pamela Britton I built my cabin 5 years ago and we wanted it to be right IN the trees. We had 70’ pines and aspens swaying all around the cabin. It was a real concern in the late spring when we still have a ccp ave of snow. Well tree aspens fell over in the wind and heavy snow but luckily they fell parallel to the cabin. Needless to say I have removed most of the tress,roughly 50 of them,from within falling distance. As well as for fire concerns. Take care down under. Be safe and Peace from Carrot Creek Alberta.

I, also, think that sleeping porch needs to become the 'master bedroom' with a cozy, little table to eat at. With no escape window in the loft, it would be safer as organized storage. I, for one, worry about the loft as major sleeping quarters except for occasional guests. Just a point of view. Really looking forward to the Mrs. and 2020 at the cabin!

You've accomplished a lot in such a short time, and to boot filmed and have a CZcams channel to take care of. Looks like you might need a large supply of large round candles for the additional lighting now. I hope they are the long lasting burning candles.

You are doing things I only dream of, I truly enjoy every video you put out. For over 30 years a group of us would travel through Algonquin Park by canoe for weeks at a time every year and we enjoyed every trip. I wish we had thought back then doing what you have done. I know we would have enjoyed it. I am 62 now so I'd never be able to do all that now, so I live through you and I thank you for that.

Such a beautiful family with an outrageous deep and warm feeling for life, there surrounding and caring for one another. My heart goes out to person who did the photography and music. It all came together for presenting an overwhelming warm story. I simply don't have the appropriate words to describe my feelings. I have a great friend who lives in Canada and GOD willing I will be able to see him and his family again.

There needs to be a way to exit the loft in case there ever was a fire. Being careful is Not Enough!! An Exit with a roll down ladder, made for that purpose!!

I built my first house as a young adult, using all modern tools (and hiring an uncle to prep during my 9 to 5), took me two plus years. Watching your drive and accomplishments while filming and sharing amazes me. So glad you have family support, u deserve it. A somewhat new comer but in my eyes you're already a hero.
