Here is the first look at the layout of my new off grid log cabin.
My old off grid log cabin in the wilderness is empty and I have moved out, ready to work full time on my new log cabin and wilderness homestead. I clear the site, lay out the footprint of the cabin and begin digging the foundation.
An early canoe trip down an icy river ends badly, maple sugar season comes to a close, I move out of the old cabin and I cut deer steaks on an open fire at the new homestead.

Ok, mushroom spores' inoculation, maple sap and sugar, deer hide tanning, canoeing, bear "short ribs" over an open fire, chaga, hauling equipment from old homestead, squaring up new cabin site, drone shots, Cali and her toy, complete with muddy feet. It seems to me, you never once showed us a fish fry. My goodness. Happy Easter to the James family and all my fellow viewers.

@MAKOBITE I am sure that are a lot of emotions tied with the original site which may, or may not be on the same parcel of land. We know that the arrangement of buildings may not be shown for the sake of privacy and protection. The ladies, except for Cali, want to be able to go shopping or be out socially without being identified and inundated by the public. I think Shawn will tell us if and when he is ready.

This is a different piece of land than the original cabin was on. Approximately an hour deeper into the wilderness.
I just KNOW this is the happiest dog that EVER lived on the planet. 🐕🌎💫

I think that when we use the term 'self reliance' in this context, it means, as a prime factor, reliance upon oneself to achieve the outcomes we desire. From these videos we can see how much of Shawn goes into physically and mentally shaping the projects he's envisaging. The physical demands alone are enormous. It takes real courage to routinely deal with such demands and difficulties.
For me, what makes these videos so especially enjoyable is Shawn's sincere and respectful character, and his 'self' discipline. These are great qualities to see in a human being.

I'm at the cabin now middle of nowhere, no electricity, no running water, no neighbors. Just me and my dog 😄
We finished our hiking couple of hours ago and I just started to heat the sauna. Dinner is ready, waiting for me in the fireplace. Old school cooking. 😄

Some times it’s not a thumb down on the video but kind of a response to what is going on like a agreement to a bummer that has happened.
Jokes on them. Any thumbs up OR down contributes to the viewing stats and grows the channel. At close to 2 million subs, they are only helping Shawn get more viewing recommendations ;-) I laugh everytime I see the 'thumbs down' squad at work here. I.Q. can be very subjective. Shawn's videography skills are legend. Anytime a simple CZcams video can bring you to tears with it's beauty, you know there is no amount of negativity that can ever darken the light these artistic creations bring to the world.

I’m always shocked when I see dislikes on a high quality video with quality content. It can be a video about sweet babies and puppy dogs yet some people will always hit the dislike button. I don’t get it! It takes more energy to dislike a video than to navigate away if you don’t like it. It’s like a punch in the gut for the creator who’s spent enormous amount of time, energy, and probably money.
They don’t dislike the video ,they dislike them selves.When they see this mans strength talents freedom and joy they measure themselves and in their minds they come up short ,instead of taking a good look at why ,it’s much easier to hit the thumbs down .Sad unhappy people 🙏🏼🕊🌅

Shawn James has discussed many times about the effort and planning he put into his life to achieve what we see on camera today. He talks about his failures and successes in reaching this point.
Maybe you think I was born into wealth. Not at all, I wasn't that lucky. But I was fortunate enough to have parents who taught me how to strive to achieve my aims, and to not squander my resources. Now I value the life I have, I see it arising as a dependency on many things, including caring for the environment, honesty, sincerity, etc.

It was bittersweet to see the empty original cabin shuttered... However, that genuine smile while standing in the footprint of the new cabin made it worth it. The excitement surrounding the new homestead is palpable

Yes, I also wanted to see how everything at the old homestead looked in winter, and then in spring. The pond, the garden, the root cellar, etc. I loved seeing the inside of Shawn's cabin in winter when outside everything was totally freezing.

Shawn. Something I always thought of doing, even as a kid in 1959 when my Mom and Dad had their house built. Set up at least 1 of your cameras to time lapse the whole build process/summer without moving it. Mount it to a tree, high up.Plan for a larger battery and tree limb growth. Maybe keep your ladder stored under it so you can always know where it is at and to make for easy memory card changes. Heck, you could even do your whole life year after year. I'm sure all us fans would like it, and your Grandkids. (Years from now, even Great Grand kids, et cetera et cetera)😊👍👍👍👍👍👍

I´m not a "dog-person", I never treat animals bad, but I´m not a person who jumps down on the floor to cuddle with them. I´ve always had an attitude of a clear distinction between humans and animals. But I gotta say watching this video, I felt inspired. Seeing the life-joy in that dog, exploring and playing in nature, but always circling back to Shawn. Then away again for another adventure! It´s a beautiful thing, and I think I got a new appreciation for the consciousness that´s in those furry creatures. Maybe when I meet a dog next time, I can interact with it on a deeper level than before. From one creature to another, on more equal terms :)
They can cleay communicate (see Bunny the dog of Billi the cat on YT) and can think and communicate thought processes to humans if given the opportunity. Not much difference between them and us
You miss out on a lot by not being a dog person. They have tons of personality and sometimes a wicked sense of humor. I had one dog that would steal the kitchen towel off the counter and parade in front of me till I paid attention to her. This was a big dog. She wanted to be chased and get attention. She never touched anything else or tore the towels it was more of a look at me thing. I really miss her poor thing got cancer at 6 yrs.
dogs > humans....there is a saying about a dog being a man's best friend for a reason
Humans and animals are definitely different on many levels but at the fundamental core we all have the same impulses and needs. All it takes is one connection to a four footed one to be tuned into their personalities. Cali is a marvelous teacher.
I've always had dogs my whole life. Some I've been closer to than others. But the older I get..the gentler I become not just with dogs but humans as well. My dogs know everything. They read stress and energy and will always be there for me and my wife no matter what happens until they pass. They understand things on a level we as humans mostly cannot. My wife fell last night and got hurt....the one dog still has not left her side and the other does constant check-ins.
The depths of sadness I feel is perhaps outweighed by the knowledge and determination you have to start again will see you through. I keep thinking we are all heading towards a new adventure in your life. May you overcome all obstacles that might present themselves in the future . God bless you and your family, big hug for Cali.

Nice job on the "J" stroke to make your canoe track in the same direction without having to constantly change paddling sides I have seen way too many canoeing videos where the paddler has to switch sides because they don't know how to make the slight correction at the end of their stroke to compensate for the power portion of their stroke. I taught canoeing for quite a few years at Boy Scout camps, and this was one of the most difficult skills for students to master. Even "Daniel Boon" and other presumed outdoorsmen shown on tv and movies have not taken the trouble to learn this skill. It is a pleasure to watch someone who knows how to properly paddle.
Who the hell would THUMBS DOWN 👎 this video when it just got posted? They literally couldn't have watched the whole video since its 45min. It already had a bunch of Dislikes in under 45min. Life is good! A spot to sit next to the fire, watching your dinner cook. A beautiful view of spring awakening all around you. Rewarding work that gives you a feeling of accomplishment and a safe place to rest at night so you can wake up and enjoy it all again another day. That pup has it made.

I used to love playing with my Lincoln logs as a kid. The size of this cabin looks like there will be use of interlocking inner walls...that was my favorite thing to create. I'm so glad Shawn is younger than I and fit enough to give us this ongoing armchair experience. Although I'd rather be doing it.

I too saw six different shades of soil that will make a perfect start to a little compost heap.... The microbiology there must be amazing.
Do you actually sense the difference in the "feel" of this new homestead area Shawn ??? I get a completely different sense about this area from the old place ....and that's just thru the video. So much more peaceful and content. It's just a beautiful sense of serenity.
I feel that too. It feels much more peaceful and almost surreal somehow like being on the edge of a higher dimension.

I am sooo excited and thrilled to see the approximate dimensions of the new build. I am hoping that the entire family can chill together and that the wash house is attached to the main cabin. Ooops, that's my female voice speaking. lol
Me too, lol. I get up too many times at night, to have facilities so far away. And, I like daily showers, not a weekly adventure to a bath house. I'd never make it there but admire those who can.
As it's basically an outhouse, you don't want that attached, esp in the summer, lol. I am curious to see the new plans and layout.
