A Relaxing Week on a Wilderness Homestead, Fish, Grow and Forage a Wild Meal

- My wife and I paddle a canoe and kayak in the Canadian wilderness, dining on wild mushrooms, fish, blueberries and raspberries. At the homestead, I begin building a vestibule on the greenhouse to install a custom painted door (completion in next episode).

Your video has stirred up a long forgotten memory in me from my childhood .
It was when my Mother took us to a cabin on the lake for a weekend .
There was a 1 room cabin on a lake in Ontario .( In the summer )
There was a rowboat there with oars and steel locks .
My brother and I very quickly learnd to row .he would have been 5 yr old , and myself about 4 .
We spent the weekend sailing that rowboat around the cove .
BEST TIME OF MY LIFE .
It was a sad day when we had to leave .
i can still smell the scent of wood in my nostrils from the cabin and the lake .
It was the sight of Calie standing on the shore near the Canoe that gave me the flashback .
The place where our rowboat was tied up was very simular to this .
Oh we felt so FREE there .

I smell the rushing water ,
i smell the flowers .
Sometimes we get so caught up in our dailey lives that we for get to stop and just smell the flowers .

I am about 8 years older than you Don, and I share those same memories you had. I spent some time at 7th Lake in the Adirondacks and at what used to be called Clarendon Lake in Ontario.

I too grew up going to our family cabin on Lake Ontario. US side. Greatest childhood memories there.

Is it any wonder why we love these video.s so much.......We all want freedom and peace of mind.....I worked up at a resort high up in the mountains of British Columbia for over 15 years..I would live there for 6 months a year,nothing there but nature and my dog also.It was always the same at the end of the season,So hard to leave,it changed me forever...Nature was created by God and the cities by man....Thanks Shawn for bringing us home again

Honestly, I think this situation has been building for the last 40 years and I’ve been preparing for it since I was a teenager. The 2008 financial crisis was the catalyst that caused me to get more serious about it.

I love the music. It’s mystical and enchanting. Idk if it’s your wife that is doing all the filming and mixing the music in, but whoever is doing this work is an artist. It’s so well done. This work will some day be put together in a film for future generations like the “Man in the Woods” film.

I had dome gnomes, small creatures, chipmunks, turtles that lived there. That’s what I called them.

Shawn you know I can see the beauty that you live in and see why you love it there so much. Between the fishing and building your home there. I know the work I do at the hospital is important enough to keep me going strong until that day comes when I leave here with my dogs but until than I will keep moving forward until my day comes to leave here and settle in my home in the woods. Shawn I have watched many documentaries of the west coast of Canada and Alaska and remember your comments when you visited Twin lakes. I grew up traveling, camping and fishing many parts of British Columbia with my father and those comments resonated with me.

I just love what you are doing out there in the wilderness, no matter if it is canoeing, carpentry, creating a mouth-watering meal, throwing the toy for Cali, or sitting with your lovely wife. Just wonderful. I was loving the scene with the lake and the fog and wondered how it could possibly get any better than that, and lo and behold, here comes a little family of ducks around the corner. That is a wonderful shot of the moon at 7.15 minutes. It's always good to see a well sharpened saw going though lumber like that too. What a delicious repast you fixed for lunch. It's good to see construction of the greenhouse doorway to keep uninvited foragers out.

What a beautiful Province we live in. I spent all my summers in my younger years at our cottage on the outskirts of Bracebridge ont. How i miss those days. Due to health problems etc. they are gone for me. Thank you Shawn for sharing the peace and beauty that surround you.

I've got to say, I was going thru some serious withdrawals not being able to watch your videos Shawn. You see, I made a move from where I had spent the first 64 years of my life living in various places around Oregon to living out in the middle of the Winnemucca, Nevada desert.

I almost forgot what it's like to saw boards by hand...and nail them with a hammer! I've become so used to power saws and air nailers. It makes this old guy tired just watching it done the old way!
What sucks is that I can't cut near that straight with a skill-saw. By hand would render the board useless.

Beautiful video, everything one would want from nature. The bass filets, wild blue berries, mushrooms and your own green beans. Of course your family sharing the great outdoors makes it perfect. The last touch of leaving no trace as you drowned the fire pit and disassembled it and covered it made me smile. BTDT, been there done that, but it is a rule to remember.
