- I make a screened door for my off grid log cabin with wood I milled from trees on the property using hand tools. In the garden, I harvest zucchini and sun dry it for storage to get me through the winter.

A year ago if anyone would have told me I would spend 40 minutes of my life watching someone making a screen door for a log cabin I would tell them they were crazy. Not only do I watch I look forward to every new video regardless of the task or topic. I truly admire the man, his skills, and his commitment to self reliance.
Welcome to The Cabin 🏡
Me Too.
Yep
Me too also
Shawn honestly has one of the best channels on CZcams. Interesting, well shot, informative, relaxing, entertaining, and well shot. And he seems like just a straight forward kinda guy. What you see is what you get, no sales pitch, no gimmicks. And in a world of corporate CZcams channels and sponsorships it really rings true to people.
Remember... every shot requires a different camera setup. There is a great deal of work in producing such wonderful content. Thanks Shawn for your very fine effort and for sharing it all with us.
Also give a nice reward to your fog Shawn ,he is one of your support making the cabin, a companion and best friend
that poor dog LOL always has his toy ready to play. god bless his doggie heart
Yes, I saw her wet pluffy hair under the rain....😢😢
We have a screened porch off the back of our house and I will never own a house that does not have one. Best thing ever for morning chat with a cup of coffee, or eating barbecue from the grill. It's just so nice this time of year to enjoy outdoor air without bugs biting us. Your wife will love it!
Elizabeth said, I was shocked how many houses in Florida have screened-in porches!
I think i can honestly say your channel is the greatest i have ever watched. No other channel (television or CZcams) gives me so much enjoyment, motivating, ideas, goals, inspiration, peace and relaxation...all at the same time.
Estoy de acuerdo con su opinión... Un saludo desde Venezuela para todos y en especial para usted Sr. Shawn!!... I agree with your opinion ... Greetings from Venezuela to everyone and especially to you Mr. Shawn !! ...
I'm convinced there's absolutely nothing Shawn can't do. The sound of rain is so relaxing!
Agree
You will never get old as long as you live in nature
The porch looks so nice, I love the style and door with the bear on it. ,Cali is such a good dog and faithful companion, mans best friend. Wish family members could be that loyal !🐕🙄🤔🤐🌲🌲🌲🌲👱♀️🙋💝 thank you for that video I really enjoyed it, oh and your garden looks fabulous
That rain on the zinc roof is sending me to sleep. Absolutely love the sounds of rain on metal roof... Nature's own sleeping pills. UK.
Hi Shawn, Tim from Michigan, USA here. Disregard the "Haters" I think they are just depressed, or living a life that they hate. Live your dream my friend!
The rain, the wind in the trees. The back scratcher, banging the stick down with your skillet. The bird call. The crane. The wet dog eating zucchini. The garden. Deep breath. Thank you.
Doesn’t get any better than that ✌️ 😊 👍... I want to live there😢 I just wouldn’t want the rest of the world Eavesdropping on me😒... Your also making me very hungry Shawn😄...
"The wet dog eating zucchini." I'm dying.
I love your audio content: never removing any of the beautiful sounds surrounding you. It makes the videos! You have a great mic, by the way! I love watching your content, thanks for bringing us along.
@Carol Mathis. What a great poetic comment! Clip and clear and yet, full of imagery, thank you!
y say WHAT!!!!!!!!!!! WET DOG OMFG the smell on such a cute dog
Watching Shawn and Cali do their thing in the rain was so rewarding. The rain alone made my day so peaceful.....
Lights and a pretty door on my favorite room of the cabin. I see some possible storage space in the overhead of the porch but I bet Shawn James is way ahead of me in thinking of it. I can still hear some adult in my family saying ,"If you slam that door (meaning screen door) one more time you're getting a whipping") by which time I was out of sight running full out.
LOL. I have fond childhood memories of slamming screen doors too!!
Grandparents used to say, "you weren't raised in a barn". Or something like that.
@@ragdoll49 lol I used to hear "close that door before you let all the flies out"! LOL 🤣 that one always had me thinking though...?flies out???🤔. The older generations humor, I miss it.
even all muddy Cali is still the best looking Golden on the Net. Still cant get over what a beautiful dog you have Shawn.
I mean your Dog , so supportive . Your dog looks so serious watching you making the cabin,.
I wish there was more men like you in this world . Such a pleasure to watch you .
If there were more women like his wife, there would be.
@@robertwolff3221 not sure that is an excuse to hold anyone back from trying this lifestyle. We all are free to make choices. Sorry to hear you feel such resentment.
The women in my life inspired me to build a cottage. I feel sorry for your feelings of inadequacy.
I'm with you on that one! It would certainly be a blessing & an answer to my prayers to find a man like that!
Jaditelady173 Mary No resentment LOL
Well, I see Cali’s Pond is getting deeper and deeper!♥️ Very exciting. I love the screen door Shawn. I got one for my apartment this past April and just love it. Would be better if I had a whole porch like you! 🤣☺️ Enjoyed seeing the natural dehydrator. Excellent idea. Friday’s are my happy days cause I know you and Cali are coming to visit me. ♥️♥️ thanks Cali and Shawn!🙏
Watching you and Cali work amidst heavy rain, Cali with a droopy wet face so cute, and that thunder, followed by the raining of pipe stems, as we say in The Netherlands, to see the lush green forest, all mid summer, it's a lovely contrast with the early springtime vibes in The Netherlands, with trees still leafless. Cooking in your outdoor kitchen with that emerald forest around, a roof over head, all safe, I think I could spend all day in that kitchen! Only leave it to bring the scraps to the goats, or the hens. I hope you'll find yourself in such an outdoor kitchen again, in due time. This former homestead was a true little village in a way, and that bark-barn had its spooky atmosphere for sure. Great for telling ghost-stories, inside, with the light of a lantern. What we can make with our hands can be made again.... and again... isn't it a comfort to know that? Part of self-reliance ;)
Esse seriado nos mostra o quanto podemos buscar a paz em nós mesmo e o quanto podemos tornar a nossa vida auto-sustentável. Adoro esse seriado!!
Win win! It rains so he finds an indoor project that needs doing, and gets his garden watered effortlessly. And no bugs to boot.
Do you have a hidden dog bath somewhere, for all of the wet and mud we see her adorned with, normally she is well brushed, really clean, and the most attentive loving dog I have seen in years. Everyone else comes to see what Shawn is doing, I come to look at Cali. Good for a little spirit brightening on a dull day. I've noticed that although Cali is named and responds to her name, you've taken to calling her pup and she loves it. Also I notice the dog pool is filling nicely.
Goldens are self cleaning. It a wonderful thing.
I love seeing her love for her daddy. She gets near him and her tail starts wagging, a beautiful thing.
Cali might end up with her own channel. Imagine her with a GoPro mounted on her noggin.
There is nothing like a good old screened in porch. You can enjoy the outdoors in all seasons, plus you can come out at 2 in the morning and not have to worry about any surprise encounters with wildlife. As always, another great video.
Beautiful home and land! I like many of you other viewers cannot drive a nail or grow a vegetable but really look forward to your videos! I think we are all in love with Cali - what a wonderful companion! As I read in one of the comments, the "Do Not Like" clicks - totally ignore them as they are people with small minds and nothing better to do. Keep these wonderful videos coming!
The rain on the roof is a magical sound!
Yes. It was putting me to sleep as I was trying to watch the video. I had to stand and walk around. 😊 Cheers, Steve
Welcome to ASMR. ASMR is basically a reaction in your brain that causes slight tingles and is known to be relaxing. I can't remember what ASMR stands for (english is not my first language), but the A is for Auditory.

The sounds of nature are lovely.
An amazing sound, magical place
What beautiful rainy day. Cali doesn't care the weather she loves to play. She is a hardy dog 🙂
Love watching Kali being a helper lol , she loves your attention ! Sweet dog !
For me, it's spontaneous and automatic. As soon as you show the first clip of Cali, what comes out of my mouth is: "There's that sweet girl !" She LOVES to "help" dad. Nice meal! With the limited space, I'm surprised you didn't have the door swing outward. Good lookin' screen door.
What a life. I love watching Cali especially. You have worked so hard for this. May you always have the peace you deserve
Another great video enhanced with natural sounds not using distracting music.
Cali is so faithful, wonderful companion❤️love her
Oh poor Cali..Unexpected love a nd here is the rain we want. The land that gives ten to one.A hardworking and wise man.God and you ..It is still lived together.
There are still people to live with!
And their lives to be shared.
This is the world The world is that simple.
Thank you, good person...
32:54, I see Cali likes her greens too, lol.
Greetings from Dublin Ireland again. You make me homesick. I’m Canadian too.
Patricia, shur isn't Dublin a grand place? Oh, I forgot, the lockdown. Come down the country, we do our own thing. I even camped out with my dog in the woods and we had a ball! Inistioge, being a tourist spot, encourages me to skedaddle at weekends. Too peopley!
The screen porch looks great, the pond is filling well, that stir fry made my mouth water, and oh that sweet dog of yours. Thanks for sharing all of your progress with us. I love seeing all the hand tools that are probably mostly antiques and they still work.
To hear the rain and see you making the door is soothing. It must have rained all day. At least you don’t have to worry about watering the garden.
So awesome. Thanks for sharing and the extra work to film and edit.
My porch is one of my happy places, I hope you and your family have many happy moments on yours!
THAT'S gotta feel Good! Getting the screen porch FINISHED! Well Done! Cali-the-duck = What rain? WHAT a REWARD to fetch the produce of your hard labors from the garden = YUM! Isn't it 'handy' having an outdoor kitchen = compost bin is right handy! Meal looks great...had to watch this on a day of fasting = OUCH those hunger pains! Thanks for sharing your time/talents with us Shawn...too bad you can't surprise your wife and girls with any of your projects as they see it all before arriving...oh well...they'll love it! Health and God's blessing on you n' yours!
I really enjoyed this video. Why ?
1. It’s a good video.
2. I am 80 years old, outdoorsy, have a 64 acre farm, etc.
3. Celebrated my 58 th wedding anniversary this week. Currently my wife is very ill.
Thus my heart is heavy.
4. Just the sound of rain was soothing and the rest of the video was great.
Thank you.
Mack
Sending healing vibes to you and your wife. Hang in there bud 🙏🏻❤
Hello from MA/USA, the sound of the rain is so inspiring to write something new. Thanks for sharing another great video... it’s great to learn how to build a screen door. Awesome 👏
Massachusetts here as well, have watched your journey, so very inspiring
Cali just living her best life!
I could work my whole life and never have what you have. I am an Iraq vet and will never have that kind of land. I love your videos. They make me envious. Good for you man.
Your carpentry is more a work of art than a craft. Beautiful job .
A nice rainy day project. I want to thank you for taking the time to set up the camera for all of the shots. I really appreciate it. I think you will really enjoy your new workshop. You have a good summer.
A lovely reprieve from the bugbites! Now your wife can have her reading room surrounded by nature
without being bothered by those moggies! Looks like things are looking good! Cheers Sandy & Andy!!

Your cabin and garden look amazing this is living the dream, you are a lucky man, this is the way I for one wish I was living and the way we should all be living, not stuck in dead end nine to fives just existing instead of actually really living like you are.
It's that God given yearning in Some of us to appreciate living and working off the land. God Bless You fella, Keep at it! And I'm enjoying watching you Do It.
I love the sound of rain on the metal roof, that is what I have on my house. Thanks you for another great video.
Your kitchen, I think thats the most beautifull kitchen in the world, especially when it rains.i love it.
THIS AWESOME SCREEN DOOR WAS HAND MADE IT WILL LAST A LIFETIME 😀I HAVE MANY MEMORIES OF SUCH A DOOR 😁😍😍
Watching you chop the wonderful bounty of vegetables is making me drool. Some of my most favorite veggies....all of those you have there. what a great way to spend your day. Working on the cabin screen door, picking veggies, and always playin with Cali. I love that she found the scraps of veggies you tossed into the trees.
I cant tell you how much I love your life and all you share with us! Thank you Shawn so much!

Your videos are so addicting, you are learning to coexist and survive in the wilderness just as the native americans did, also spraying the back side of the vegetable leaves with compost tea will feed the whole plant for weeks and you can keep spraying use an air stone for 48 hour before using and add molasses or sugar and wood ashes, you have a beautiful and well behaved dog
Cali look lovely alk the time. She is happy with all seasons... what a lovable dog she is.. 😍
Love your porch, turned out beautiful and the emblem is the perfect touch, sound of that rain, doesn't get any better than that. You have made your own Eden Shawn, healthy, beautiful garden, thunder storm pumping energy, if you ever wake up to find your kitchen gone it will be here in South Carolina ❤️ this crazy world needs the peace your channel has ❤️ thank you for continuing posting. Take care and God Bless ❤️
@@earthangel8730 I'm not much into signs either, but Shawn's are different, a testament to the work that he has done there, pretty much every square inch has been touched and moulded by him, a truly loving reminder for his family, because no doubt that his wife and girls were being thought of as he worked, that's where the difference is. Take care and God Bless
Sooo relaxing watching you and cali..respect from Newcastle england.
Sean . I really enjoy and appreciate your videos , your hard work and dedication reminds me of my late Dad who was a Rancher and a Farmer here in south Alabama . He built a shelter for ever combine , tractor, discs , plow, etc that he owned , these machines were cleaned and oiled after each use. He built his own fences, gates , barns, cattle sheds, cattle trough , cattle loading shuts , as well as constant repairs on our wood frame house., he always had a project , just as you his saws and blades were properly cared for . Our home had two fireplaces for heat, to this day I have kept the bathroom kerosene heater to remind me , be great full for what you have,
God Bless You and keep you always safe .

I am a 71 year old widow and I would give anything to be able to do what he is doing. I'm going out to my 6 acres of woods today and chop some wood for my new chiminea....at least I am going to try.
@Miriam Johnson. Oh, how lucky you are, at your age, owning 6 acres of wood and a chimney for a woodfire. I would do everything for a piece of pristine land, when I could afford it to pay for it. I always feel that owning a piece of land, where I would build a cob-home for myself, or a yurt, grow vegetables, flowers, and keep a few hens, or geese in a pond, is the best thing in life.
Wow that method of preserving the zucchini is awesome! ✌🏼🌿🌸🌿❣️
I often wonder what Cali is thinking. She seems so involved in what Shawn is doing, and she also has her own things going on. LOL!
@impatience1 Haha!
Cali is thinking "what you are doing is not as important as throwing my dummy"

Now I want to see a "10 hours of rain from Shaun James porch" video. Perfect to sleep to or just play every morning as the world wakes up. I bet it would be one of your most watched videos. Thanks for another upload. Be well.
oh thank you so much...this old grandmother is enthralled
The porch must be a welcome addition during the hot summer months. What a relief a rainstorm would be!
Relief from bugs!
That was a feast and a half, Brilliant. All looking good.
Watched your 13 minute talk, after the staircase railing. BRAVO👏👏👏👏♥️🙏 Be well, continue to enjoy. I have my morning coffee watching you and look forward to each episode. ☕️
I still find videos I haven’t watched before, and find that my morning coffee isn’t the same without these videos being a part of my morning. Never a waste of time but pure enjoyment thanks for what you do
Good morning, Shawn. Thank you for these bits into your busy days.
Your wife is going to really like that door. It will keep the bugs off her and is very well crafted.
Wonderful skillful photography and scenery, and the rain added to the magical atmosphere of the woods. So glad for you and your lifestyle with Calli.
Hi Shawn!❣️ Thank you again for another video; I appreciate your time and efforts. Watching is often better than any other medicine for relaxation and inspiration.👍
Came across this little video and thought of you, hoping this gives you a smile 😁
I ❤️ My Beautiful Canadian Friends!
Have a great day, aye? 😂😉 Enjoy!!
This makes me realize just how lazy I really am, because on rainy days like this, while you’re building yourself a screen door from scratch, I’m piled in bed with a good book and a cup of coffee.
*Edit - BTW, your garden looks amazing and I’m so happy that all your back breaking work to get your garden going is now paying dividends.
Feels like it was only a few weeks ago he made it and now he's getting huge vegetables already.
Your outdoor Kitchen, what would you different if building again,or leave as it is.
That's what I've just been thinking, Lorchid23. He is sooo busy. And it is where his self reliance and confidence comes from.
Love to watch bis videos in a daily basis (also the old ones, since I discovered bin only 2 months ago). Greetings from Germany.

That is a very nice screened in porch, now just a couple of rockers...... Cali is such a sweet fur baby
Fantastic video, so soothing and relaxing! Your garden and the porch look amazing! I have two sons a few years younger than you and I don't get to see them much ... I miss them terribly. Having your regular videos on both channels makes me miss them just a wee bit less. Thank you!
You have become one with nature. What a pure and self sufficient way to live. It must be so wonderful to be so up close and in touch with the pulse of the forest. Your garden is so healthy and bountiful, which must make meal time something to look forward to. Such a great way to dehydrate your food. I will have to get my husband to make me some screen forms to do this. Presently I use a dehydrator but you can definitely process more at one time by your method. Your videos are always so educating which makes them so enjoyable to watch. You did a great job on your screen door. Did not take you too long at all. One thing you need to grow is a rose bush for your wife. You can make all kinds of beautiful scented and medicinal products from the rose petals and hips. Maybe a bit of lavender too. You do have a woodland paradise there ... Well Done! Gosh, you should feel quite an accomplishment from all your hard work. Your family must be very proud of you. :)
23:00, Just think how much better the garden will be next year, cheers!
Shawn I’m still here watching ! Regardless of the hell thats going on in this country and around the world as well with my life as it is now you have given me hope and a place to go to find peace and some clarity through all these things going on in the world as you continue stead fast it’s your inspiration that contains us all who watch and it gives hope ! Keep doing what you do and keep safe ! God bless !
How sweet it is to get just enough screen material at the end of a roll for your new door. I think this video solidified my decision to work with wood, making handmade products, when I retire in less than a year.
I did not know you could do that with zucchini, great idea. I will have to try that one, thanks
James Keenan I thought the same thing! I live in Florida so I wonder if it would work with humidity?

The porch door was a great wet day/undercover project. It's good to see your pond filling from the rain now. The sun-dried zucchini chips look delicious too, Shawn.
Well at least the garden gets a good watering, the pond fills up, and the bugs are not a problem. I really like the porch.

@@n.s.7223 The area near Shanghai is like a huge flood basin. It's been raining hard for more than expected but the areas affected are more to the south. In here it's been nice because clouds have covered the sun and cooled down. Hahaha the sun after the rain makes us feel like steamed dumplings.
