Log Cabin Porch Build Using Hand Tools and an Alaskan Chainsaw Mill

I mill several half logs and planks to build the front section of the porch on my off grid log cabin and I frame the rest of the porch and the door on the west side of the cabin.
In the outdoor forest kitchen, I make duck confit and blueberry pancakes while Cali, our golden retriever, follows me everywhere.

I've been watching for about a year and a half and I've got to say, I love this channel. 30% because I like to build stuff as well as watch it being built. 70% because of Cali.

I'm 70 and watching you work on the porch and cooking is so incredibly exciting. I have not always been a fan of soaps on TV and quit watching a few decades ago. But this I will never get tired of watching. I love your dog also. I enjoy the breeze through the trees as the sound is so clamming. Thank you so much.

You and I are what dad would have described as "like lightning with a hammer", never hit the same spot twice 🤣. Love watching your build, particularly with your use of hand tools. Personal knowledge of every piece of timber, nail, saw cut is very unique in today's world. Letting your work talk for you is refreshing and relaxing. Thankyou.

Took me 2 mornings in a row to get to watch the whole video - - my wife has a knack for needing something done at the most inopportune times! Hey, coffee goes better with watching your vids, anyway! Love how the porch is coming together nicely - it doubles the living space of the cabin, at least in warmer weather. As always, stay safe!

I think you should put out an open invite to a Country band to do a concert on that porch. Make em' breakfast, lunch, and dinner and let the cabin and forest help make the music. This would be big for their channel and for yours. In my opinion this is one of the best channels on you tube and it deserves its own concert.
So I'm watching again, between sleeps. 3.30am UK time and I'm still watching. Tomorrow Monday, is a busy project day and here I am watching Shawn build a porch at a cabin he doesn't even live in anymore.

Watching your videos has been so relaxing for me over the years. My mom has had a few strokes over the last 4 years or so. your videos always bring me peace when I'm stressed out or worried. Now she's in palliative care at the nursing home. It's a waiting game at this point. I had to come home and rest to be strong for her when I go back. This video is just what I need to just relax and recharge a bit. Just wanted to say thank you. You're helping me get through it.

I can’t say I have seen a bad video of yours but this was perfect ,good content good length and a very good dose of Calli the wonder Dog. We lost our 15yo recently and every time I see Calli she cheers me up.

Remarkable. A one man crew with fabulous craftsmanship. Not to mention an incredibly hard worker who earns every meal from that workload. Your family must be amazed and proud. This is brilliant.
My late father would have absolutely loved your story. He studied tracking with the expert Tom Brown Jr., as well as wilderness survival, which he taught to kids at camps in Ontario. And he had great carpentry skills, which included spiritual items like beautiful pipes and native drums, etc. Every time I watch you, I think of him.

He is making it somewhat bear proof by putting the slabs down low. I don't think the Mrs would sleep out there if there wasn't a little buffer in between her and the woolly bear. Vaughn

Thank you Shawn for all your many talents. Your family must be so proud of you and this beautiful homestead you have created and built for them as well as for yourself. The front of your cabin should be on the front of a Christmas card when it has snow on it. Its absolutely gorgeous! You remind me in so many ways of my father. I am the middle daughter of 3 daughters. From the time I was very little my sisters and I were always in awe of my dad. He is an outdoorsman too. He took my sister (2 yrs older) and I, 12 at the time through a NRA class so we could hunt with him. We grew up camping and water skiing. Well anyway my two sisters and I use to always say to our friends and family...My dad can do anything. We knew it was so! My dad passed very recently, but he was 84 and he lived a good and full life. I am 64 now but those days almost seem like yesterday. You remind me a lot of him when I was growing up. I use to referred to him as a mans man. I looked hard for a man like him. I never found him, so I raised my son to be one 😉. I couldn't be more proud of my son. He also has many talents. He is a good man.👍. Thank you for being a good man. This world needs more good men. Thx, LOL🙏

So I'm picturing a cool fall morning, the woodstove going in the cabin, window to the porch is open, letting enough heat out to take off the chill, eating breakfast out there, (some of your led lights strung up of course), hot coffee with a shot of the steam rising from it, and the patrolling of Cali with one of her trainer thingys waiting patiently for her master to exit and start another day of work, or play, and whipping that trainer into the nearby woods. Can't wait. On another note, I had a huge smile with that shot from the forest kitchen showing the porch and cabin. IT. JUST. LOOKS. RIGHT....and makes it HOME. I've joined many others, there's nothing on TV worth watching (barely), THIS....THIS!!! IS very satisfying. Wholesome. Entertaining. Educational. Amazing. Good on ya Shawn James for making a POSITIVE DIFFERENCE in this world.

Yeah he spoke of that as an option during the original cabin build... many moons ago 😃
I believe he stated in a previous video that he was concerned it might compromise the structural integrity of the cabin if he attempts to convert the window into a door.

These are the videos I like most Shawn. You just working efficiently and not saying much or very little. Like I wrote once before, don't get me wrong, I like to listen to your takes on different subjects. But I really dig it when you're grubbing, playing fetching time with Cali every now and then and just silently doing your *_Wilderness Thing_*. Yeah it's nice.
The chainsaw mill is a really great idea, especially if you only occasionally need to cut up logs lengthwise. A cheap solution instead of buying a big mill or having to haul everything to town. Awesome video - as always! Wow, 962 thousand subscriptions, holy smokes - must be doing something right ;-) !!!!!!!

So happy to see another update coming in......watching it over lunch again ! We’re from Holland, living in Germany and travelling a lot with our 7 mtr. Camper. Did a big tour through the Usa, West Canada and Alaska with our own camper. In those days a big one, 8,5 m., on a truck chassis of Iveco. We loved BC and the Yukon. We would love to do your part of Canada as well. Healthwise, at the moment, not possible to do that again, although we would love to. I love to watch your building progress and the sharing of your thoughts. 😉👍💪🏼

The porch is first class, and completely transforms the cabin: WOW! I LIKE! Roasting the duck and pancakes made me put you on pause and a rush to the kitchen. The scene with Cali in the lake at sunset just took my breath away. You should create a perfect still of that and have it mounted in a frame for the cabin wall. I think it makes him unique building this way. Not doing the lazy way. He really can build the old way. No plans drawn out he just starts and it comes out looking great.

I like how you constructed the screen. It doesn’t detract from the appearance of the porch at all! Later on you could replace the screening with glass for the winter months making a 3 seasons room!
Are you going to replace the window in the cabin with a door to the porch? A Dutch door would be great! Then you could leave the top half open for ventilation and when serving meals.
your videos are so so so relaxing. i love them all...even the cooking brings back so many memories when i was a child when my parents took me camping...it was the ultimate experience and a life time of memories. camping is the first, middle and last thing on my list...
