- The Wilfa's Svart Aroma has been a stalwart of electric grinders since we introduced it to the UK market several years ago. Having used and written on its merits extensively, this video brings these experiences together in one place. Taking a look at its key attributes, we explore what you get (and what you don't) from this accessibly priced, filter coffee grinder.

I just discovered your brewing guides on the web page, they are really great :)
Glad you're making good use of them, Flemming.
Thank you for making short and useful. :-)
Thanks for advice on cleaning!
Our pleasure. Thanks for watching.
Bought one of these back in 2017 and still going strong! Great value + portable, though be careful with the bin.
What has your experience been with the bin?
@@SuperSarutobisensei I dropped it and the plastic cracked. It consists of a main bucket and a lid, and both are pretty thin plastic.
I had this shipped to my friend in her country. I hope it works good enough for pressurized.
It's normally the voltage and power requirements that cause an issue, especially if it's being used outside of the EU.
Great video. Could you recommend the dial in grind size for use with the Moccamaster Cup-One? Many thanks.
Picked one up today. I also have a Timemore C2. Still dialling it in so I cannot compare on taste profile but I enjoy the aesthetic and automatic grinding experience. it just looks beauts. Sick review 👌🏼
Thanks, Samuel. If you have any more specific questions on either, be sure to contact our Home Brewing Helpdesk.
9 months on how is it going? What do you prefer the svart or timemore c2?
@@dh7314 thanks for the reply! I have some horrible motor issues with the Svart. It makes this disgusting grating noise. It's a motor bearing and not the burrs. Performance wise it is solid. If it would shut up, I would go for the Svart for minimal effort. The C2 is something special though, if you're prepared to invest more time on dialling in a particular coffee.
The C2 can do espresso at a massive push but the effort required isn't worth it IMO.
Hmm, Svart edges it because I'm lazy in the mornings.
@@samuelll3166 cheers, appreciate you taking the time to reply
@@samuelll3166 Hi, just wanting to let you know that timemore has new burrs that are way faster at the espresso range. Technically it's for the C3 but it's sold separately by authorised retailers on Aliexpress. There's the E&B and the S2C burrs and both should fit the C2. The newest burr (that's comes with the C3) is the S2C 38mm one. I just bought those and guess I'll have to wait until they arrive.
Hi, thank you for this great video. We have a problem with our grinder. We can't remove the plastic part around the blades anymore to clean it, it's locked. Maybe we put it back in place incorrectly last time we cleaned it. Do you have any advice to unlock it? Many thanks!
Great video and really useful to see your maintenance tips. I've been using one of these grinders for a couple of years and funnily enough I'm currently on a bag of the Yolanda Cabrera - I can't decide if I like it best with V60, Clever or Aeropress! This grinder has definitely opened up my interest in coffee having gone from a £30 hand grinder before, biiiig difference!
Fantastic to hear; we're sure the Wilfa Svart has positively impacted the brewing lives of thousands of coffee lovers. We hope you enjoyed Yolanda Cabrera - be sure to try brewing it over ice if you get the opportunity.
@@workshopcoffee9001 Thanks for the tip! Really enjoying it and finding I'm getting best results with the V60, as I'm getting a lot more of the flavour notes with that method.
I have been using the grinder for just some months now and have found it a really pleasant experience overall.
Regarding the grind setting I agree with you, within this Aeropress Range I found the best results and to my best of knowledge the best grind distribution. Kind of annoying, that the dial range is so large and yet mostly unused.
Anyway, in my experience, this grinder is really consistent with very little variance, mostly less than 0.1g, especially if you turn it on before adding the beans. Only after thorough cleaning, I found that the grinder will hold back around 1.5g of coffee on the first go.
Great video, thank you. Would you guys know where I could find a La Pavoni / Bplus Apollo in the UK? Cheers!
Great video. Would love to see your review of the wilfa uniform
Really enjoy your no-nonsense, clear approach to these videos and agree, a similar review of the Uniform would be great.
Thanks 😊
Thank you both - dually noted and watch this space.
Hi thanks for the update, does the grinding disc lock in , as after two attempts to use grinder it stops grinding along with a increased noise which sounds like something is going wrong
Does this grinder allows to change grind position from one use to the other without any need to purge some beans?
I’m brewing with a moka at home and my €30 manual grinder was an absolute nightmare. Now i am doubting between the wilfa svart and the 1zpresso JX-pro. Any thoughts or recommendations on this?
Wish this was available in the US...
Do u know whats the best to grind cold brew on this ?
Thanks for the video, good to see it's fairly easy to clean! Trying to decide between this and a hand grinder - how would you compare the grind consistency and range between the Svart Aroma and the Timemore C2 you reviewed recently?
The grind quality is fairly comparable for us. If you’re ever planning to grind on the go then the C2 will offer that flexibility, but if it is mainly for using at home and the Svart Aroma is within your budget and you have the space, the luxury of grinding with just the press of a button is definitely worth it.
I was very surprised to read this comment, as it describes the exact same situation I'm in, with the exact same products. Now I know what to buy, so thank u!
What setting do you recommend for 500mil Clever Dripper?
Do you recommend using any cleaning tablets?
Very informative video, thank you. I am in the process of deciding between this Wilfa grinder and Baratza Encore. I'd mostly use it with a Moccamaster One Cup to make 1-2 cups a day. Any suggestions on which of the two to go with? Thank you!
Exactly my question!
A great question. It's hard to choose between the two as they both deliver comparable grind quality at a similar price point. Do you know where you’ll be positioning the grinder? The Encore switch is on the right of the body so might limit where it can be placed and this would wind up being the deciding factor.
Haha i have the same question!
Hi there! great video, thank you. I've ordered the grinder from Amazon and just got it. Strangely, the motor spining counter clock wise, and the coffee beans expalled out of the burr. Do you think that there is any problem with my grinder, or I've just missed something? Thanks!!
Hi Delphine - we'd definitely take this up with the seller, we we'd expect to see the motor running clockwise.
@@workshopcoffee9001 wow thank you very much for checking it! I’ll try to fix it. Thanks again ♥️
Thanks for the useful video. Apologies if this is a very stupid question. Is the top burr symmetrical? I.e. after cleaning, is it irrelevant which way round you replace it? Or, is it possible to replace 180 degrees incorrectly? Hope that makes sense!
Hi Colin - there's no such thing, so thanks for your question. It would be best to make note of which way the burr was oriented before taking apart and put things back together, just to rule out any machining discrepancies that might result in a reduction in performance if you flip the burr, but in theory it shouldn't matter which way around you mount it.
@@workshopcoffee9001 Much appreciated, thank you!
How does this compare to Wilfa Nymalt?
I have just got 1 of these it's wicked I just wondered I use a filter Machine but what's the best grind for filter is it closer to aeropress still
Hi Dave - great question. It will very likely be within the AEROPRESS range, but if you let us know what type of filter brewer you're using, we can offer something more specific.
@@workshopcoffee9001 hi thanks for replying I'm not sure of the model number but it's a prestige filter Machine lol
My Wilfa grinder makes a terrible screeching noise when the coffee's gone and it's running on empty. I've had it for maybe 4 months and it started early enough that I thought it was normal. I've read about the metal part of the burr being misalligned in the plastic part but it doesn't seem to be the case. However, the burr is misalligned in the body of the grinder. Can this be causing the screeching? Is there aything I can do about it?
Hi Raaphal - did you purchase your Wilfa Svart from our online shop?
Reach out to wilfa and get it replaced, specially if you are within the warranty period (5yr). No reason to keep using a faulty unit when you can have it replaced
Did they change grinding size? For French press I have read online to set it on the O of aero press but it seems too fine to me
Hi Simone - our suggesting for French Press brewing aligning the A of AEROPRESS with the red line on the grinder. Let us know how you get on.
@@workshopcoffee9001 Where would you recommend setting the grind size for use with a Sage The Precision filter machine?
Awesome video, thanks from Russia ❤
Are there any mods or upgrades available for this grinder?
Not that we're aware of, Mihai.
Total novice here but would this be any good for a pressurized portafilter?
Good question. We haven’t tried out the finer grind settings using a pressurised portafilter but would speculate that the results would be drinkable, but not fantastic.
Can you change the burrs on this grinder?
Hi there - thanks for watching. You can only replace the top burr, rather than the entire set on the Wilfa Svart.
You missed the comparison against wilfa wscg-2. I've been searcing noise comparison, there is none.
What about cleaning by grinding rice hack
How is the static with this grinder as some really are terrible?
For us, the static is tolerable but not absent. You can reduce almost all the rogue chaff that clings to the grounds bin after grinding by adding a single droplet of water into your whole beans before grinding. It also helps to wait for a few seconds before pulling the grinds bin out after grinding to give the light bits of chaff and coffee some time to lose their charge.
Mine broke (stopped grinding) after 6 months. I got it repaired and it has just died again. I won't be replacing it. At over £100 it should last more than a year
Something weird about taking grinder recommendations from one of the dudes who you used to get coffee off in coffee revs far too long ago.
the Wilfa grinder has a weak motor, it is faulty by design. It stops in the middle of grinding. My solution is to start grinder before pouring in coffee beans. Then pour slowly and steadily, and everything is OK.
On my second and just spent an evening taking it apart for repair. definitely not reliable.
Did you manage to fix it? Mine is not working at all, very bummed now. :(
@@Liliedugg I did. Changed out a capacitor. Working fine.
Oh my god... I sure hope that vacuum was never used for your floor...
I made the mistake of buying the WIlfa Svart Aroma. It arrived broken (won't turn on), and Wilfa's customer service is taking their sweet time responding. At this point, I wish I'd spent the money with a company that had better quality assurance and customer service. I just want a refund.
