@well not big enough. Sinn féin have turned their back on the very people who put them where they are. All they want is open borders & 10s of thousands of young Muslim men who are unvetted are being brought in by the government. Very sinister and not going to end well.

This ballad is one of the most popular of all the songs in the long history of the Anglo-Irish conflicts. Kevin was a first year Medical Student who joined the local battalion of the IRA. The band was banned by the British Broadcasting Corporation in Belfast and London. it was also banned by Radio Eireann but for a different reason. Mrs. Barry(Kevin;s Mom) requested that it not be played. Therefore it was'nt played until after her death in 1958. .

The song was also banned on Radio Eireann but for a different reason, his mother requested that it not be played on the Station while she was alive. She died in 1959. The song was also sung world wide by Irishmen serving in the British Army. One person reports heatring it sung continually in the British Officers Mess in New Delhi.

I guess it was because of Kevin Barry that Cillian Murphy's part in "The Wind That Shakes The Barley" was a medical student. How incredible that the BBC still bans the song but not un-typical of that government mouth-piece. It's on a par with that idiot Clarkson's comment that Ken Loach "hates his country" for making the brilliant film.

  • @liamthedream

It made no difference. The song was sung far and wide throughout the British Empire by Irishmen serving in the British Army. Some people even heard it in the Officers Mess up in the Punjab. So it was made popular by word of Mouth long before Radio Eireann and the BBC. Funny how things work out. Had Kevin not being captured that day, he probably would have gone on to become The Surgeon General in Dublin but patriotism knoks on all kinds of Doors.

    Mountjoy Jail one Monday morning
    High upon the gallows tree
Kevin Barry gave his young life
    For the cause of liberty
Just a lad of 18 summers
Yet there's no one can deny
As he walked to death that morning
He proudly held his head on high
Just before he faced the hangman
    In his dreary prison cell
    British soldiers tortured Barry
Just because he would not tell
The names of his brave comrades
And other things they wished to know
'Turn informer or we'll kill you!'
    Kevin Barry answered, 'No!'
    Another martyr for old Ireland
    Another murder for the crown
Whose brutal laws may kill the Irish
But can't keep their spirits down
Lads like Barry are no cowards
From the foe they will not fly
Lads like Barry will free Ireland
    For her sake they'll live

Kevin Barry was a hero but actually he wasn't that special, then most of the IRA fighters were heroes who fought for the freedom of their homeland. In any case, Kevin Barry gives a face to the resistance against the British. Because you shouldn't forget that the Irish rebel army was made up of many fighters like Kevin and they all risked death as did Kevin. But unfortunately the problem with rebel armies is fundamentally that the individual seems unimportant and disappears in the mass. But the fact is that a rebel army out of many individuals who are all willing to fight and risk their lives for the freedom of their homeland. Therefore it is important to remember not only the leaders but also simple fighters like Kevin Barry because without them the IRA would not have existed.

Jeez you talk a lot of intellectual drivel. They were all important, from the intellectual to the fighters. In fact the fighters were more important because they made it happen . That's why we in the north revevere the fighters and not the intellectual..

Chara it was freedom fighting up until 2011 - after that, It became about drug dealing and protection rackets, that is why I support peace now. I wish for the vote now, no need for the IRA Anymore, we have Sinn Fein, SDLP & PBP and Green party plus ordinary people fighting politically for constitutional change. for an Ireland were catholic, protestants, dissenter, white, black, Asian, Latina/o straight, LGBTQ And Pansexual people live together in harmony and peace. I'm a catholic, one of my best friends lives in the Shankill, he's even been to Republic of Ireland matches with me and other friends in the capital Dublin. He loves it, he actually said he prefers REP of Ireland matches over NI FC Matches. We get on very well and have done since we met 10 to 11 years ago. We sit in my other best friends house close to Ardoyne on Saturday nights watching UFC with A few beer, not a bitter bone in any of us. If I can move on anybody can as I was almost murdered by unionists and attacked a second time years later. As I said, If I can move on, anyone can, God-bless Mo Chara, Slan go faille Anois Mo Chara!
