    Good Part 2 Video! 👍🏼. I’m pretty much in agreement to all your proposed update requests to the Manticore. I like the idea of a wraparound menu…and to solve the issue that Tom was mentioning to you about users possibly cycling endlessly thru the menus without knowing they wrapped around already, I’d assign a number to each top level menu sequentially and display the number on the screen to assist the lesser intelligent. 😅
    I also have been researching the noise cancel operation on the Minelab machines, and increased my understanding of this feature further after Minelab incorporated the Long Press NC on the manticore. I do believe the single pass noise cancel is an inferior procedure, because EMI pulses can be longer in nature and a single quick scan of the 19 noise channels is not sufficient enough to arrive at the quietest channel to operate your machine. The key implementation of the long press that makes it a better algorithm is the fact that the noise data (dB) for each channel is stored in static memory and is updated for each noise cancel cycle to compute an aggregate value for each channel in order to arrive at the channel with the absolute lowest level of EMI…in theory, it should only take 3-4 sequential scans of all the channels to arrive at the best channel, but technically the manticore software could do this without the need for us to have to hold the button down…all the data is stored in static memory….I’d also like to hope someday that Minelab could implement a background noise cancel tracking (similar to auto ground tracking) so the operator doesn’t have to keep manually doing noise cancel operations to make sure he’s operating at the quietest channel for best performance…I know here where I detect at my urban city parks, EMI is everywhere and I’m constantly doing noise cancels on my Nox to squelch noise…I’d rather not have to lower sensitivity to put me out of range of the deepest/oldest targets I tend to look for.
    Tom Dankowski replied a few days ago to Sharpshooter’s comment on the noise cancel Long Press of the ‘Core. Here’s his reply:
    David......... The amount of time that I "LONG PRESS" the Noise Cancel feature is....... highly variable (never the same.......and by a wide margin). . . . . . . and I NEED this ability to adapt to differing local EMI variable conditions. BUT............ I WILL SAY THIS = I NEVER/EVER use the 'touch-and-release' feature of Noise Cancel. It is ALWAYS "LONG PRESS". Soooooooooo........ touch-and-release is nearly useless. THIS may be where something can/could be changed. My thoughts are: "touch-and-release" could be configured to do a .......... "4-cycles".......... scan. (In other words; touch-and-release would cycle through all 19-Noise Cancel Channels........4-times/4-cycles). David........not a bad thought!

    Great points. I'm with you. I would like to be able to enlarge the ID Map section slightly. There's a lot of valuable information there in the target trace that I have to keep putting on my readers to see the small details which tells a lot. Because of some hearing issues, sound along with the ID map is going to be a big asset for me. Thank you for your time and videos.

      I'm a fan of the Manticore. But it has issues that the testers either brought up and ignored by ML..... or not caught with the field testers? Either way it's unacceptable for a $1600 machine!

  • @pigeonbloodruby5330
    @pigeonbloodruby5330 Před rokem

    I 100% agree with your observations!
    Lower Ferrous Limits, you can't discriminate iron that's a Minelab 'FEATURE'.
    I watched a video of the same issue of the margin of the Upper ferrous Limit doing the same thing as the lower limit.
    A clock would be very useful. Maybe some of us don't bring our cell phones with us detecting? Rain, weight, interference with the detector, etc. A clock would be a good feature to have. A count down/up timer would be helpful too.

  • @dusty1498
    @dusty1498 Před rokem +2

    I think Minelab copied Nokta on the Vibrating handle but the feature they should have copied is the clock. For me personally I find detecting a escape from reality and if my machine had a clock on it I would be constantly looking at it thinking about the time so the Clock feature should definitely be an option on the main screen.

  • @TerryKnipschield
    @TerryKnipschield Před rokem +1

    I'm with you on your observations! I dropped my jaw a bit at his suggestion to "use your ears" to evaluate a target as opposed to using discrimination. I started detecting in 1976, when effective discriminating circuits were just being perfected, and they were a godsend! There were also no digital screens, only analog meters and ONE tone, so you HAD to listen to "the quality" of target sounds/signals more intently. I KNOW how to use my ears. But it cracks me up when someone brags about running their machines in "all metal" and using no discrimination or "notching" when their detector has a digital display, showing a number value for the target, and has variable pitch tones giving different sounds for different kinds of metal targets! How is that NOT using a form of discrimination? I prefer to tune out any group of targets I don't want to find or hear. I've used Minelab detectors since the Explorer SE was released and moved up to the Etrac when that came out, which is also my preferred detector today. For me, there is no other machine that gives me more information about a target than the Etrac does. I have several socked away, so they'll last longer than I will. I won't be buying a Manticore because of the short battery run time, and long recharge time alone. They haven't got it right yet.

    • @mowerdog
      @mowerdog  Před rokem +1

      I can't argue with you saying the etrac is still the top machine still today.

      @@mowerdog By the way, I really like all your videos (and Bill's too!) because they're very close to my style of detecting, and I can relate to your observations and tips! I laugh when others refer to the Etrac as "outdated technology". The processing speed might be slower than current models, but then I don't swing my detector or walk at 90 mph either! Lol

    I’ve noticed the same thing with the lower ferrous. I pretty much run mine wide open. I have a bigger problem with square nails. They ring up like a great target in AG or AH. In trashy it seems to be easier for me to figure out it’s a nail.

    That would drive me frikn bonkers having to cycle through that many options in a linear menu. Wraparound menu is very much needed. Notching is a form of silent discrimination. I never notch on any of my machines. I do discriminate high on the D2 sometimes, but that discrimination is a tone break, the discrimination is connected to the iron volume. The iron volume is not necessarily only the for the iron, it is the discrimination volume(reject volume). If I pass over a target that is rejected...I want to hear that reject tone....there is no reject tone if that target is notched out. I hunt strictly by tones and never look at my numbers on all of my machines.

    • @mowerdog
      @mowerdog  Před rokem

      I understand. I enjoys your videos. On the Manticore you gotta set your upper and lower iron limits then search with the horseshoe on before you get an iron tone. In this mode iron also adds a red line under the number. I miss that a lot of times. This is why I want the TID numbers to turn red as well as the iron tone. You're the only guy I know that can put a bag over your pod and still know what you're digging!

      @mowerdog on a beach this is a great machine but so is the 800. Equal=
      The 2D tells a good detectorist what he already knows.
      There are Visual and audial learners.
      This machine is for the visual learner IMO.
      I believe there are more reliable detectors that are less expensive.
      No matter how much I wanted to, i never saw the 1600 dollar value in the Manti. In the iron it is not reliable to my standards which is extremely important.
      The 2D is gimmicky, it's to soothe the souls of Minelab users due to previous iron PTSD.
      It is slightly more reliable than the 800 in iron.
      You could own a used Nox 800 and a Deus1 for around 800.00 total.
      Or a Legend and let's say
      the new Xterra pro both new for around the same. 800.00
      If/when the updates on the Manticore get resolved I will watch closely and maybe visit that road again.
      I've owned 13 detectors, I hunt extensively the border of Kansas and Missouri Civil War camps, military roads,outposts,Homes from the 1770s to 1870s.
      I do like your videos, you are a great teacher.
