That Mercer KO was absolutely brutal. Morrison was out on his feet after a left connected and then ate 10 more shots before the ref stepped in. That ref should have been banned from boxing after that.
Morrison had won every round of that fight before the ko too. He just punched himself out. Mercer had a great chin and Tommy didn’t box smart that night
If memory serves he was the same ref who ten years earlier allowed the EXACT same thing to happen to Ken Norton when Cooney trapped him in a corner in a similar way…..check it out, I think it’s the same ref
Wow. This really saddens me. I was just talking about Tommy Morrison the other day and was wondering about what he was up to nowadays. Had no idea that he lost that badly and fell off the deep end. Thank god Joe at least knows what he is talking about…. These other clowns have no business talking about boxing when they haven’t got a clue about it! Tommy was not only a complete savage in the ring, dude was a humble, hard working guy. Big up Joe for being the only one to say anything credible
I agree Chris, joe is so popular yet no one complains about this. That particular (or more aptly peculiar) characteristic is indeed torture. When I’m not in the mood to be annoyed (because it does) I can’t watch and just turn it off. Why doesn’t someone get in his ear about it- I guess cos not enough people tell him or feel this way. But well said!
@iamthebroker The reason they avoid putting the video in the screen or audio, is because CZcams constantly took their videos down because of copyright.
RobertBaratheon305 fair call and didn’t think about that. Perhaps others that do do it have cleared the copyright issue and those that haven’t at least don’t watch it in front of us and react as they do- I think that’s the naturally annoying thing. @phillip martin Tyson and Morrison are more similar than you think. Both burned out due to their lives out of the ring. Morrison partied hard and did steroids on top of that. His body was taking on a tough workload.
@phillip martin I guess when you're jacked and knocking guys out left and right you feel like God and untouchable. I think the Mercer KO fucked up Morrison's head badly and caused him to go off the deep end like he did with muscle implants, meth addiction, and all that shit. There's a documentary on CZcams where he was trying to make a comeback in 2007. He was mentally fucked in the head, literally.

I felt like he was a wasted potential, but I am grateful that I got to witness him in his prime.
I worked in corrections in Missouri in 95 - 98 in a certain prison . Morrisons brother was locked up there. @@sammyborhap He said that because, plagueis believed he had cracked the code to immortality. He thought he had nothing to fear. Not even the rule of two.
It's a tragic story, but at the same time he hid his disease and went on to compete against people who had no idea of the risk they were taking. Luckily no one he faced contracted the virus, but that's still inexcusable.
Since then, alot of fight promotions are required by the state to blood test the fighters. I think even WWE has to make their wrestlers take an HIV and Hepatitis blood test.
The calf implants guy was a student at Elmira College at the time. I live in Elmira, NY. One of my friends and I were at the bar the night they were shooting the final scenes of him out with his friends and showing off his new calves.
I got to meet Tommy Morrison (We’re both from Tulsa). One of the greatest experiences of my life. He was a truly sweet guy. He also gave me some good life advice about Drugs, Unprotected Sex, and Ego.
Tommy Morrison was the second biggest waste of raw talent and potential in heavyweight boxing. He had top tier fundamental skills, great flexibility, fluidity, balance, timing and coordination. he had other worldly knockout power in both hands, and his left hook was probably the greatest of all time. He knew how to throw that damn left hook, both long range and short range. A superb offensive fighters(one of the greatest in terms of offensive capability). What he did not have were the three D's- discipline, direction and dedication to his craft. Tommy loved to party, and he partied all the time. He never focused after a point, on boxing. He partied literally all day, all year, and it not only stunted and eventually stopped his career, but it also killed him. Its just such a sad story. He could have been so great!
@Iceman 23 Riddick Bowe. He could have been the greastest of all time. He had everything- size, reach, height, strength, cardio, chin, the ability to box from the outside and was such a great inside fighter for a man of his size. But he was focussed only for the Holyfield fight, he just wasted his time and overate apart from that and did not focus. Its sad really, he really had all the tools and the ability to be an all time great(he kinda still is but you get my point). The Bowe who fought Holyfield in the first fight could have beaten any heavyweight to ever live imho.
A lot of people overlook it, but Tommy fought a really smart bout against Foreman and actually looked like a solid boxer. Just one more lessen, in this sport, of what could have been. The history of boxing is littered with such lessons.
I loved Tommy. He was a great fighter and by all accounts he was a great guy as well. Joe knows he was a great boxer and the other two tool bags need to shut it. It was a very sad ending for Tommy and extremely tough to watch him fade away from that awful disease.
Reznik did a great little tribute video called Tommy Morrison - The Rising Sun. The Grave shots are sad. Gone too soon, Duke. His life could be made into a Hollywood movie. Supposedly related to John Wayne, girls getting his number, two wives, steroid use (he wasn't the only one..) and was in a Hollywood picture.

The mercer ko was one of the nastiest ko's I had ever seen before mvp got knocked out

"Aye, yo, Tommy... I didn't hear no bell."
definitely one of Rocky's best lines in that movie!
My ring's outside...
@Charles Carter ….. yeah? Let’s do it!!!
I'm sitting here, reading the comments. There are so many people saying how Tommy was a polite, generous guy and that makes me happy. The only person he ever abused was himself. May he rest in peace, my favorite fighter.
Tommy went to my cousin's church. She said he was super nice.
When Joe brought up George Foreman, one of the other guys should've said "George Foreman was 76 years old when they fought!"
listen closely, one of them says george foreman was 74....
Tommy has been one of my favorite fighters since I've seen Rocky V. Had one of the greatest left hooks in boxing history!
Joe, by the way, Tommy was a HW champ. He and Foreman fought for the vacated WBO. He won another belt too.
Long Days wasnt a major belt back then
AdmirLM10 he was a HW title holder. I mean, that’s the point entirely.
@@longdays5705 Yeah I was actually searching the comments to see if anyone points out this fact and once again Joe Rogan has no clue about boxing!! :P U know what im saying.Nah guys Tommy wasnt only a champ..he was a great champ 4 me at least.GO check it out he was the HW champion or a HW champion
allthough i think this was the only title he ever had ..but i think he held it twice(NOt 100 percent sure though) relax ma boy we all know back in the day WBO wasnt major but now it is and
1st point im sure Joe has no idea if it was minor or major he hasent even seen 1 fight of Tommy(except his first loss of course)
2nd point :All HWs who have held the WBO are considered former champs whether we like it or no (DO NOT ASK ME BABY ...ASK WIKIPEDIA....ARE you GUYS MORE KNOWLEDGABLE THAN WIKI.com¨??):P XD
Well said joe. Tommy was a tough , talented fighter who sadly just lost it and never recognized his true potential.
Tommy Morrison was a beast, also I live in the same city as Tim Silvia and can confirm he wore his belt everywhere, even to the grocery store.
@@theonofswords3764 yep I remember Tommy hitting him with everything but the kitchen sink and Mercer ate them with a side of fries.
I can't even watch it. "The referee was afraid to get in the way" but that's senseless and I hope he still stays up nights tormented.

Wasn't a big fan of Rocky V but Tommy did do a good job playing the bad guy in the end. Really sad to hear how his life ended :(
Thank god Joe at least knows what he is talking about…. These other clowns have no business talking about boxing when they haven’t got a clue about it! Tommy was not only a complete savage in the ring, dude was a humble, hard working guy.
Big up Joe for being the only one to say anything credible
Tommy was a great boxer it’s tragic what happened to him
Watching people watch something while they talk about what they’re watching but you can’t watch is literally torture
....but you can't stop watching.
@iamthebroker
The reason they avoid putting the video in the screen or audio, is because CZcams constantly took their videos down because of copyright.
RobertBaratheon305 fair call and didn’t think about that. Perhaps others that do do it have cleared the copyright issue and those that haven’t at least don’t watch it in front of us and react as they do- I think that’s the naturally annoying thing. I’d prefer they just reference it without watching it.... but thanks for the explanation.
@iamthebroker
I agree it’s very annoying. This channel is so big that they can’t get away with any infringements. Rogan talks about it on the podcast all the time.
So Tommy basically played himself in Rocky 5.
He was actually playing more of a parody Mike Tyson.
I didnt even know the guy in Rocky 5 was a real boxer.
@@thegrimmcommoner2203 Yeah at the time, but after Tommy signed with Don King it became much more life imitating art. Tommy was in real life almost a dead ringer for Tommy Gunn, although I will say I never carried Tommy Morrison out of a bar for drinking milk,.
Yup, Exactly. My family knew his team and him as he knew my family in the game and the saying from his team is they always took a sy of relief when they would get him to the arena. The local bar owners would call them and say Come down here and get your boy off the floor before the local news shows up. Wild

Boxing fans: What a train wreck Mike Tyson was!
Tommy Morrison: Hold my beer!
FRANKIE FRANK Both were highly skilled, yet highly undisciplined . Just imagine what their peak versions could’ve been if they had discipline
FRANKIE FRANK but theirs a big difference Tyson had the potential to become the greatest boxer of all time Tommy at best could’ve become a good heavyweight champion for 3 years
@@hornydolphin7953 your kidding right? Tommy had as much potential as Tyson. He was a party animal and relied soley on his natural boxing ability to bail him out his entire career. Had he been disciplined he would've been a HOF heavyweight period.
I love the podcast. Show what your talking about so we can actually see it too. Carry on.
As a teen Tommy was my favorite boxer next to Tyson..I can still remember watching the Mercer fight live and being like that's not supposed to happen ha

I grew up in KCMO and I was able to witness Tommy spar @ authentic boxing club. His punches sounded like fastballs at a MLB game. He had great combinations, especially body to head. My dad was a veteran and befriended his chief sparring partner, Brian " BamBam " Scott. I won't bother with the negative talk about HIV,partying, etc. Tommy is a product of the game. I felt like he was a wasted potential, but I am grateful that I got to witness him in his prime.
My dad was a teacher in Jay, Ok in the early 90s. A friend of my dad’s was good friends with Tommy Morrison.
I worked in corrections in Missouri in 95 - 98 in a certain prison . Morrisons brother was locked up there. The story I always got was that the brother took the fall for tommy because of his boxing career. I transferred in 98 and I don’t know what happened to him afterward But I guess Tommy would visit occasionally. I never saw him though
How brave of you to share this secret
TM had one of THE BEST left hooks ever in Boxing!!!
I met Tommy Morrison's best friend about 7 years ago...he was my weed man for a good 2 years. He told me all kinds of fucked up shit that happened to Tommy. Met tommy a few times, boxed at his gym here in Wichita a time or 2. He tried to recruit me but I was well past wanting to be a boxer anymore. He seemed like a nice guy. RIP Tommy
I believe his career was deliberately sabotaged by the evil men in control of the fight game, due to his larger-than-life persona and the threat it posed to the propagation of their 'narrative'. I would like to have the resources to investigate his entire life and every person who had an influence in his personal life or control over his money and find names of all the bad people involved.

sometimes you can have it but not be a person who can transmit it to others / i think
How come boxing transmits HIV to others?
@@AlfonsGunawan when u break the skin, blood comes out. blood on blood is how hiv is transferred
Since then, alot of fight promotions are required by the state to blood test the fighters. I think even WWE has to make their wrestlers take an HIV and Hepatitis blood test.
You can also get hiv from sperm and breast milk.

Every boxing fan would do themselves a world of good learning about Tommy. Its a heartbreaking story
Well said!
A lot of people overlook it, but Tommy fought a really smart bout against Foreman and actually looked like a solid boxer. Just one more lessen, in this sport, of what could have been. The history of boxing is littered with such lessons.
Tommy Morrison is the perfect example of having it all to losing it all that quickly.
sex, hard drugs, booze and punches to the head did tommy in

That was a beautiful video
Tommy had 4 negative test after originally testing positive and there has been a case opened March this year
I recommend watching a documentary on Tommy Morrison. His story is pretty incredible. Guy was a savage in his youth, and fell hard.
