- Raga Puriya is an evening time raga which has a sensual and romantic mood. In this performance Purbayan ji has explored this sensuality of the raga to 3 different compositions starting with - Madhya laya Jhaptaal (Medium tempo 10 beat rhythmic cycle) follwed by Drut Ektaal (Fast tempo 12 beat rhythmic cycle) and culminating in Drut Teentaal (Fast tempo 16 beat rhythmic cycle). The performance goes from a playful languid state into a crescendo and is interspresed by brilliant rhythmic sperts by wiz kid of tabla Ishaan Ghosh. Hope you enjoy this one.
The performance has been shot in one go (on the fly) at the Roland Artist Centre whowere kind enough to let Purbayan ji and Ishaan to have this place to shoot this video. Purbayan Babu has the aristocratic elegance in his sitar repertoire. Great master of the likes of Babu Radhika Mohan, Nikhil Babu and Manilal Babu. Great work.

I think Nikhil was a much deeper musician. Purbhaiyan has good technique no doubt but sacrificing the Raaga's Ras.

Pt. Purbayan Chatterjee is brilliant and inspiring. It is hard to separate where his fingers end and his sitar begins. One of the best players of this instruments by far! He's always innovating even with the familiar, such as this Puriya rendition. Ishaan Ghosh's tabla playing takes your breath away, and he is just a teenager!

My sitar came in yesterday. I played it and it sounds nothing like what he is playing. You don't understand how hard it is to sound that good on a sitar until you try to play it yourself. Let's just say it's not as easy as it looks. I appreciate your music even more now.

But highly disappointed with the cameraman.. too much of unnecessary camera movements have been done. Please avoid using this camera guy in future projects.. a stable camera would be preferred..
Performance is nice, but who told you that Pooriya is romantic? Please be corrected that Pooriya is NOT a romantic melody. It is primarily full of Bhakti-Ras involving devotion, love, submission; not romanticism. One can creatively generate any mood in any Raaga. There also exist many traditional vocal Bandish-s with romantic lyrics in Pooriya, but those do not make it a romantic melody. You have Sohani for that; and may as well consider mixing Maarwa's pathos with some romanticism.
Learn how to unfold raag note by note. Jumping here and there isn't real Hindustani dhrupad Or khayal style.

@@kanagarajb9765 Alford thinks he is a genius of Hindustani music. He does this by criticizing maestros. I've seen most of his videos on CZcams. He does not match up to any of those he criticizes. Arrogance always loses. Purbayanji has more talent in a strand of his hair than Alford has attained in his whole life.
