An insider’s view from former cabinet minister Rory Stewart OBE on the upcoming UK election and the difficulties a new Government will face taking over a country that he believes is bust, with public services we can't afford.
Rory is already selling out venues like the O2 in the autumn with his The Rest is Politics podcast co-host Alastair Campbell when they'll be debating the issues before the nation votes.
He shares candid stories from his eye-opening decade at the heart of Government, detailed in his memoir Politics On The Edge, saying there are elements of privilege in elected politics but it’s “bruising beyond imagination and only very unusual personalities usually survive in it.” Rory reveals he’d like to work on public policy for a Labour government, perhaps chairing a commission on Ai in the NHS.

The man is refreshingly self-deprecating, and staggeringly honest.

I Like Rory. What you need to do Mr S is go around the country, small towns, and hold public meetings. It’s old school and something politicians are either too scared or too blinkered to do. They rely on focus groups which aren’t the same thing. That idea doesn’t include having Mr Campbell in tow. Not the O2, smaller venues where you can engage with people properly. Stop trying be a showbiz personality and seek out what the people think

Agreed, but I certainly don't believe Mr Stewart is "trying be a showbiz personality". He's far too cerebral for that. The events related @27.40 give us the measure of the man, and for some reason that is beyond me, Westminster has decided it can do without him.

Maybe he could walk across the country and write about the many primitive peoples living there and their odd cultures?
      naw, too dangerous a place

Traitor? Please explain that. Listen to his words, (in particular @15.00 to 22.17) before answering.
