Nothing will ever beat being 12 years old and getting together at a friends house in 1986 on the weekend staying up all night playing Super Mario Bros., Kung Fu, etc. on the original NES. But, I don't mind playing good emulators. It's more for my own nostalgia and great memories growing up.

My problem with the community is how obsessive people get with collecting. They find a deal for some games on Fb marketplace that they have to jump on, simply because it's a good price and they have no interest in actually playing the game. It's more about "screwing over granny" who doesn't know the value rather than buying the game to play it. It's collecting community now, not so much a gaming community. This collecting greed has caused the prices to skyrocket too

I completely agree! As someone who really enjoys playing on original hardware, because of the historical aspect and the fact this was how they were meant to be played, it’s very disheartening to see these insane prices on games that I really want to experience for the first time. I know they are just selling trying to make a profit, and they don’t care at all about the games themselves.

I sold my original NES and SNES when I was a late teenager, but in my early 20’s I got back into gaming and bought my first clone console back in like 2007, one of the early dual NES/SNES ones. This was despite already being able to play these games on my PC. Slowly over the years I’ve come to re purchase all the consoles I grew up with, along with a few nice CRT sets. I also have a fully loaded Launchbox setup on my PC. For handheld gaming, I have a modded GBA and GameGear, but I also have a Retroid Pocket that runs everything up to N64 & Dreamcast very nicely.
All that said, I have a friend that’s constantly hounding me about Analogue and FPGA.. here’s the thing.. I am not a visual or audiophile in the slightest. I grew up with cheap crts and all our game consoles hooked up via coaxial cable! I *love* the imperfections, I love a little bit of jank in my retro gaming. I *understand* why people enjoy FPGA, but I DONT want my games to be pixel perfect, that’s not how I remember, and that’s not how they were intended to be displayed imho. If I own and enjoy all the consoles, and flash carts/ collections of carts/discs for them, and also have MUCH less expensive alternatives as far as emulation is concerned, AND I enjoy playing on a crt via s-video/ composite av, why the hell would I dish out several hundred for an FGPA setup? For the nuanced differences between software and hardware emulation? Nah. My friends only rebuttal is “it’s the future of retro gaming”, not for me it isn’t, game how you want and I’ll continue gaming how I want!

One that requires a translation patch to play, so I'd have to rip the rom to patch it. I don't even own a Famicom, or a ripper, and I have no idea how to get ahold of the cart. Ebay I guess. Nah. There are also people who might have a lot of digital games already downloaded before the eShop closed, and probably don't care about modding the 3DS because they probably feel that what they have is enough for them.

Absolutely agree. Everyone is welcome to have their preferences for how they want to play games. No matter what though, the only true bullet point that needs to be checked off the list of "requirements" is that you are actually playing the games and HAVING FUN! How you get to that point does not matter. I myself am a huge collector of original hardware and official games, but I still have a couple of emulation devices that I use regularly for many types of games. A mini office PC serves as my gateway to Batocera so I can play arcade games that are either too expensive, too complicated to setup or just simply too hard to find and own. It also plays NES, SNES and Virtual Boy games, all of which I do not own currently or do not intend to own, on that same mini PC. Many great games on those systems are pretty pricey which makes my little Batocera machine even more valuable to me.
CRT gatekeepers also need to shut up once in awhile. I have a CRT in my setup, but it's nowhere near a requirement to play old games. I mostly use it to view old media like VHS, Video CD and Laserdisc. It also serves as my light gun TV, but since a CRT is required to use old light guns that's a point I will concede to the CRT gang any day. Most of my primary gaming for old consoles gets pumped into my RetroTink5X on my 4K Vizio. Though not required to use something like a RetroTink5x, it IS highly recommended to get a good quality gaming scaler of some kind to minimize latency. It doesn't have to be pricey either, even the RetroTink Mini is a great device that anyone could use. This is purely for the gaming experience so potential gamers don't get frustrated with bad controls from a laggy setup. Visuals are an afterthought so long as you're having fun.

I don't mind the 4:3 picture being stretched to 16:9 but my main argument for wanting a CRT (and I WILL get one eventually!) is for light gun support! Your old games and TV shows in general looking better on a CRT than on a modern flat panel is a nice bonus!

Same. Abandonware and stuff you can't really get, emulating that isn't affecting anyone's sales. It might be hurting the value of your physical collection though. Like if I emulate instead of buying Little Samson (or Contra)? But you might WANT lower prices if you are a collector/player rather than a collector/investor.

I can understand purists trying to educate others when it comes to the "best" options out there, but it definitely can come off a bit preachy. This unfortunately is also a hobby that can get pretty expensive which always leads to a few bad actors looking down on others or feeling resentful because you can't acquire something. It happens in all sorts of circles--PC gamers and console wars, audiophiles falling down their own rabbit holes, the entire mechanical keyboard scene, etc. Personally, as a lifelong gamer, the enthusiasm for everything I grew up playing warms my heart: people modding hardware, preserving software, seeking out older tech, creating totally new devices, and exposing younger generations to stuff before their time is just amazing to see. I don't want anyone to feel unwelcome or left out!

I see this gate keeping a lot on Facebook groups... Especially the "if you ain't playing on real hardware, you are doing it wrong" types. To me emulation is a cost-effective (be it buying a retro collection on a modern console FPGA, traditional emulation, multi carts, mini systems, everdrives or whatever) way to experience games I didn't get to play as a kid, or just replay games I loved playing as a kid and sharing them with my kids. But for those who have to spend lots of money on real hardware with real carts that's cool too, but believing you are somehow superior to everyone else is just wrong.

Hey man. Great video and I agree with you 100%. I am a long time viewer of this channel which got me totally hooked on the retrogaming scene - a long time ago. I am using used 1 liter mini PCs from eBay mostly now for my retrogaming. The reason I started looking for alternatives to the Raspberry Pi was the last year or so of non-availability of Pis - so i switched and am not going back. It works for me and I think it is a great option but I am not going to try and school people on the what I do it "better" or nopt. Anyhow I get your rant and you are correct. BTW remember when we were playing around with the Retro-bit Super Retrocade? I'll never forget that - it was fun working with you on getting the thumbnails all setup for the games - and trying to figure out why only some of the neo-geo games would work on it. That ended up being the file sizes of the games that were over a certain size. lol Anyhow keep up the good work and like you said it is whatever makes a person happy be it a monetary reason or just what is comfortable for the gamers. Take care. -Tom Gellert

Some people need to often validate their purchases or to convince themselves that their way is the best way because they're insecure or maybe they have a superiority complex and in some cases they could be right that their way may be technically the best and most accurate. The thing is for some that may not matter as much, for some their way is good enough and that's fine.
This goes beyond just retro. On PC people fight over native resolution and DLSS, or PlayStation vs Xbox. I find it to be a waste of time to argue with some people over this stuff although it is possible to have a discussion over it and share opinions. It's often when some people can get emotional and passive aggressive over what's essentially a hobby around appreciating and enjoying gaming. Whatever way works for you.

Input lag is inherent to modern displays but maybe you don’t care. That’s cool, but it is a worse experience. But then maybe the modern port has save states and you like using them or other extra features. So advantage modern port … and on and on.

There is no "on size fits all" solution. You touched on all of this, so I'm really just repeating it... but:
    -There are different budgets
    -There are different standards
-There are different sensitivities to things like color correctness and input lag
If all you like to do is play RPG's... FPGA solutions are probably a waste of money.
If you you want to play newer consoles... an FPGA is only going to get you so far.
I'm kind of a... I want to try it all, and I find myself bouncing between different devices for different reasons.
If I want to play a PS1 RPG... I'm probably going to play it on my $45 Ambernic... it has enough buttons, and I can easily safe the state and pick up play whenever I want.
If I want to play something where input lag is the kiss of death... Like Mike Tyson's Punchout!! I'm playing it on the MiSTer, because action games aren't as fun on the Analogue Pocket.
There are better solutions than others for different things, but they all come at different price points.
The correct answer is the one that fits your criteria.

The worst experiences with said gatekeeper are the "console purist" that are cult like (and MEGA Karens when angered). Heck I've seen them trying to get those that emulate in trouble legally. Not all of them are like that especially now, but it was really bad back then (1996 - 2006). However with consoles & carts dying some have seen they error of their ways..... until they go into another zealot fandom/gatekeeping group. Unfortunately that is human nature to protect & defend even if it's for a stupid reason.

  • @JeffStanifer

Gatekeeping is indeed stupid. I personally like FPGA options (mister, analogue pocket) for playing many retro games because for me, half the fun of gaming is about the tactile feel, and having systems with no inherent additional input lag scratches the itch perfectly for me. That being said, i wouldn't recommend either the pocket or the mister for someone on a budget that wants to jam on turn based RPGs for example. There's no right or wrong way to play retro games, but i think there definitely can be an optimal device that can be recommended based on what someone priorities in their retro gaming experience.

Or a 3DO. Or a Neo-Geo. I don't have access to a gigantic retro arcade full of the several hundred arcade games I love. I don't have a Metal Slug machine. I love Metal Slug. I want to play it. I want to play Samurai Shodown, Fatal Fury, and Die Hard. I'm dope at Die Hard. I can beat that game a hundred times and still play it. I wouldn't have been able to discover Wonder Boy 3 or Crusader Of Centy if not for emulation. To this day sometimes I boot up my XP laptop with my wired controller and play Japanese N64 games, translated RPGs, old PC games I want to try, etc. So many games are now available to me. Emulation is a fantastic tool for people who are not rich but want to play games that would be hard to play or even impossible otherwise. I'm a huge fan of it and encourage others to try games on emulators. Sure, buy the games if they're available and reasonable. Of course. I completely agree with your thoughts on this. Gaming, collecting and preserving go so much deeper than just "own and play on original hardware" or "just emulate and call it a day". Personally, I like both options. I collect original carts and yes, I'm actually a person that backs them up so I can play them on my own devices whatever way I feel like. For me, it's actually a great way to keep track of and catalog my collection. Using portables like the Miyoo Mini Plus allows me to get in some gaming on a lunch break so my purchases are not just sitting in my back catalog. Original software is great because at the end of the day, it's a physical license. However, emulation will save the day when the original copies eventually fail and end up in some museum.
Options are a good thing. How you limit those options are based on personal preference and every method valid. We game for fun and for some of us, it's also an education on our favorite hobby. At the end of the day, you do you.
