Living in a small apartment, it can be hard to play your retro collection at a moment's notice, especially if you have a large collection. Most of my retro consoles are stored away since I just don’t have the space to have them all set up. Retro gaming in small places, like my one-bedroom apartment, has led me to the idea of having a small and moveable station with multiple consoles already hooked up. The “Retro Gaming AV Cart” is a unique twist on the traditional AV cart we used to have in school during the 80’s and 90’s. So does this make retro gaming easier, and is it practical? Let’s find out!

Man, I love this. I'm using one of those 4-cubby cube organizers to hold my 3 consoles, and it's not half as easy to cable manage compared to those nice nooks on the cart. This was a really good idea and it turned out great!

Thanks for sharing this video! I'm literally in the same situation, living in SF Bay Area renting usually means being in a small space and having to get creative. Also, I've recently gotten a Sony Trinitron 1995 Model 24" and it's a game changer for my Retro gaming setup, I was using a 10" Toshiba CRT prior

I feel you man. I’m down the highway in Santa Cruz and since work from home started I had to shove my retro setup in the corner to make room for a home office. This setup is a great idea and I’m definitely going to give it a try!

I know this is a year old but I appreciate this video. I am going to rebuild my retro gaming collection and I needed something small for my consoles. I have plenty of room for shelving, but it's not ideal for having it's own dedicated console area. I never thought to use a cart like this before (I'm new to collecting) I'm going to get maybe 2 of these in the future and fit every console I need on them. this is actually perfect for what I need.

I just found your channel last night, and I've gone through a ton of your videos! They're fantastic and it's been great to see a bunch of interesting builds. I love the production value you put into these things, but one tiny thing stands out to me that could be improved a bit. The intro music is often way louder than anything else in the video. If you could cut the volume in that intro music down to like 70% of current volume that'd help balance the video out. Again, love the content, and I'm stoked to see more!

  • @thekorekoi

This is really cool! I would love this for my room as it's really small lol. One adjustment you could make to the AV Cart is to put the thick bunch of cables running in the back into a cable sleeve (cheap on amazon in many colors), instead of a couple Velcro ties. It would clean up the overall cable mess and would tie everything together! Excited to make one of my own someday!

  • @christophercuevas4644

I love this, I'm absolutely going to be building one of these myself! In terms of the CRT, I just picked up a Sony KV20FS100 with component video input that looks BEAUTIFUL with 240p content. You can use HD Retrovision component cables or a GBS control to connect RGB scart to the component video.

I built a cart dedicated to my Atari 800. I wanted to hook it up to my big screen living room TV, but keep it out of the way for company. It has worked great. I've used the big brothers of your cart for organizing my garage for the last 20 years, and they have been awesome. I might have to upgrade my setup to accommodate more consoles. That said, I love my Gamecube. It is so small that I can just leave it out and no one notices.

I’ve been slowly reclaiming the games and consoles that captured my childhood. I Held on to a few but my older brother has the majority of it since they are his after all lol. I’ve just been running out of room and came looking for ideas on a set up and how others have multiple consoles to one monitor. This blew me away. This is definitely in my list of things to do very soon.

I'm really inspired by this video! Might have to try and put together something myself! In terms of PVMs to maybe look for, if you're still planning on using just composite and don't want to spend a ton of money, the Sony PVM 14N5U/14N1U are probably some of the more affordable ones. I have the 14N5U myself and frankly I've been wanting to get a bit more use out of it, so it might work perfectly for a setup like this!

Great setup. The cart is attractive and seems perfect for its intended purpose. I opted to place my setup in our entertainment center's glass cabinet including a small PVM and a switch connected to our primary large CRT. I love having things on display, but I might like a more sophisticated switch to change between the main TV and the small CRT. If they're not ready to play, they never get played with by me.

I would recommend a 1342Q when you’re ready to upgrade. They’re reliable and good for the tinkerer while also being simple to setup. 14M2 or 14M4 are good too but they’re getting expensive to acquire. Unlike the 1342Q, the 14M2/4 have on screen menus for geometry/color adjustment.

I'm building one of these with a few changes. I'll use a VGA CRT monitor, a retrotink, and a HDMI--> VGA adaptor.
The retrotink is a good addition to this setup for a few reasons
    1. If you don't have a PVM, the best way to get that picture quality on a small screen is a VGA monitor, and you need retrotink to play most consoles.
    2. The retrotink will always be on the cart, which makes it easy to plug any of these consoles up to an large HDTV through the retrotink. Just roll the cart next to your existing TV!
Anyway, love the setup. Would love to see what / if you've changed on it since you built it.

And here I was building a whole entertainment center to better organize my own gaming setup 😁 Seriously though, your AV cart looks pretty handy! I wish I had one when I was younger

I already have so much stuff in my apartment and so many consoles that a cart is definitely out of the question, but I have big empty walls so I plan to mount my consoles to a plywood sheet and hang it on the wall

I NEVER thought about doing that. You, sir, are a genius! Maybe in the future you can do a cart full of your handhelds?
Love the channel. Can’t wait to the next video

Thank you Victor! Absolutely, a cart for retro handhelds could be very neat!

Love this idea, certainly tempting to build one myself but mine would probably end up being an all Nintendo version. :)
